Should I report my health visitor? She shouted at my dog in my home?

We own a very excitable boxer dog, he gets excited by new faces and jumps up at strangers. For this reason, we keep him outside in a part of garden that’s fenced off when health professionals come, or another family member sits with him.

We've recently lost our spare front door key and my partner had took the front door key out with him. The health visitor turned up 25 minutes early. A family member was walking past and asked if they should call me as I hadn’t answered the door yet. I realised at this point I couldn’t let her in front door, and the dog was out the back.

I let her in the back gate and my dog, visibly excited, jumped up at the health visitor, leaving mud on her uniform. Far from ideal as I work in health care myself! She then shouted at my dog in a really abrupt, aggressive tone. Also, she called me someone else’s name the entire visit! If she had given me warning she was coming early I could have put my dog in a separate part of the garden which he can’t get out of. (I didn’t do this as she was about to walk off due to me not answering door
Immediately, I heard a family member pass asking if she wanted them to ring me, so I hurried to let her in back garden before she dashed off).

After she rang in for a new uniform, the visit began. She bombarded me with questions about how my dog is around my son, and 9 month old niece (already discussed he is calm and fine around children in previous visits). Her reasoning for this was because she said it took him a while to get off her whilst she shouted at him. Family members have said it’s unlikely that an excited dog is going to listen to a stranger that’s acted aggressive towards them on their “territory”.

I couldn’t have been more apologetic as I knew this would delay her schedule collecting a new uniform. However she raised her voice in my home.

I never normally have an issue with my health visitor however these past 2 visits I’ve felt abit patronised and spoken down too. She just jumps in before allowing me to finish my sentence. My son is teething and she asked if I’d given him anything, I replied “calpol”,
before I had the chance to say I’d only given him it on two occasions when I couldn’t get teething gel, she jumped in, telling me not to give him harsh stuff straight away. If she’d let me continue, I would of explained. She’s asked me if I have any info on weaning, I explained I help a lot with my niece whose weaning and have some books too. She warned me to ensure their up to date, I’m aware it’s her job to do this, but it’s the tone and way she says things. I wish she’d take some of my ideas on board before immediately shutting them down and enforcing her own agenda. (She works for NHS so I know she has to provide me guidance on these things as she told me).

I’m aware the stuff with the weaning and calpol is standard for them to check up on, I'm just giving a little background on previous visits. I just don’t like the manner she spoke to my dog in, in my home, around my son.

Apologies for the awful grammar I wrote
this in a hurry!

Another shitty dog owner who can't be bothered to control or train their animal. I absolutely hate dogs jumping up at me and would have shouted at it too. Awful.

Exactly this. ^ Many dog owners now are right up there with the MAMIL cyclists, and people who tailgate you in German 4WD cars. Irritating and irksome.

@FictionalCharacter a dog that jumps up is out of control end off , no ifs no buts

Noteverybodylives · 14/09/2022 21:01

I think people are forgetting the HV was almost half an hour early, the OP DIDN'T HAVE TIME to secure the dog. Because the HV was almost half an hour early.

If a visitor knocks on my door I will tell them I’m just putting the dog away or just go ahead and put my dog away before opening the door.

It literally takes 2 seconds.

OP couldn’t open the front door so could have just explained out of the front window or gone around the back and explained that she needs to put the dog away first.

The HV didn’t barge her way in.
OP let her in.
The HV being early is irrelevant.

You sound absolutely awful and no way are the children safe when you couldn't get it off her, how the hell did it manage to jump on her? I wouldn't be surprised if social services pay a visit very soon.
The nerve of you to consider complaining about her! The entitlement is astounding, and the lack of care about the safety of others shocking. You are an hcp??

I think this post is unwarranted and bullying.

I think it sounds quite accurate.

XSnoe · 14/09/2022 21:10

put my dog away before opening the door.

My uncle used to do this... Then his dog learned how to open the doors by jumping up and putting all his weight on the door handle 😩

Not really. Some dogs just get excited and jump up, especially when young. Certain breeds more bouncy, especially boxers. My boxer was very bouncy but not a bad bone in her.

Wolfiefan · 14/09/2022 21:47

Some dogs do jump. If the owner can’t prevent this then they’re not in control. A big dog jumping could easily knock someone off their feet and injure them. Saying they’re young doesn’t make that ok.

My spaniel is a "jumper". Not a bad bone in him, just very excitable

However, if he has the chance to jump up at someone he is not under control.

Twillow · 14/09/2022 23:04

Some health visitors are officious jobsworths, and it's possible that she is one of those but honestly she was doing the right thing to be concerned about a dog that it appeared you were not able to easily control. If you know it jumps up at people why didn't you just say "hold on while I put it on the lead, he gets excitable with new people."?

flutterbyfly · 15/09/2022 02:16

A dog that jumps up, is not under control. You could, and should, have had it under control, as with any visitor to your house. This is why people are scared of dogs!!!

Cliopatra1 · 15/09/2022 02:19

And why did you feel the need to say your a health worker? What were you actually really saying. Totally irrelevant in this case.

That’s incorrect. I have 2 jumpy spaniels. If you dogs are jumping as visitors and take a bit to get off someone, they aren’t under control.

RampantIvy · 15/09/2022 16:09

I've heard so many bad stories about HVs from friends

I had a brilliant health visitor @StaunchMomma. DD had some serious health issues, and my HV was very supportive, and had experience of DD's issues. She got me through some pretty bad times.

I don't think the OP is going to come back.
I hope she is doing something about keeping her dog away from visitors.

Health visitors don’t wear a uniform (well definitely not in the North East & I’m pretty sure that’s standard across UK)
Are you sure she was a health visitor?

Mine did - I'm in north east

Im a healthcare worker and perform home visits. I am absolutely terrified of dogs. If this had happened to me, I would have been screaming. I would have left your property and refused to complete the appointment. YABVVVVVU.

You're in the wrong job then I'm afraid. You perform home visits and are terrified of dogs?! That's like a postman being terrified of letterboxes

Sorry it sounds chaotic to say the least, you cannot open the front door, because you've lost a key, the dog was jumping etc.

I don't blame her for shouting and I am sorry but everyone would shout at some point during a visit, a boxer dog jumping up is a good reason.

Of course she's concerned with your very excitable dog around small children.

Since when was losing a door key a 'chaotic environment?!?!?!?!?!' That's the biggest leap I've ever read on Mumsnet! 🤣

No, it isn't. Most people have the simple wit to keep their dog out of the room when they're having a visit from a health worker.
It shouldn't be an occupational hazard.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/09/2022 04:45

FGS, I am as pro dog as it gets but to suggest someone terrified of dogs shouldn't do a job that involves home visits is ridiculous.

Suggest they probably shouldn't be a dog trainer or an RSPCA inspector or a vet, sure... but people should be able to visit other peoples homes in the course of their work, without being jumped on, snotted on, covered in hair or mud etc etc.

I did express some irritation when a repairs inspector for the council RAN AWAY from my house without saying more than 'arrgh'...

I ask all visitors if they're ok with dogs, he said yes yes, fine. I said there is a big dog on the sofa, she won't get OFF the sofa or approach you but she is LARGE and a bit old for being tipped off the sofa into another room so I'd rather not move her if possible.

Again, no objection, so in he came.. into the room. She LOOKED UP from the sofa, opposite side of the room to him as far away as it was possible for her to be... I pointed to the area for repair which was right next to the door he had entered via, so he didn't have to go anywhere near the dog.

He looked at her, said 'arrgh' and RAN AWAY UP THE STREET... leaving the bloody front door open as well.

I told my housing officer this and she was baffled too, apparently he is terrified of dogs and normally refuses to go in the house with them but hadn't said a word and had reported all my repairs as if he'd seen them all in person!

Since then, well I am older and wiser now and dogs are just not in the room unless their presence is requested (my OT and two of the DN's ask for doggage and arrange my visits to be the last so they can have a snuggle!)

RampantIvy · 16/09/2022 09:49

I think some dog owners are just too tone deaf to understand that not all people love dogs, and that some people are genuinely terrified of them.
