I am a SAHM but will start nurse training soon (as a 30 something VERY mature student).

I am a nosey sod and want to know what you all do and if you are happy doing what you do?

Journalist and radio producer in a former life. Now a semi-SAHM (dip into bits of freelance work very occasionally). Thinking of starting up a business in a completely different field, though...hmmm....

3andnomore · 12/11/2007 21:00

Suzie, where I want to do the OT degree, they don't have any advancement take in anyway, and well, I have not been registred since June 2000, so, my Nursing registration lapsed a fair while ago.
Must admit,I actually prefer to start at the beginning again. When I did my Nursing training I did far to much "Surface" learning and had other things far to much on my mind, and whilst I passed my exams with ease and not that much effort ( some more cramming and surface learning ) and I still have a good general basic medical knowledge, I wouldn't want to have to base a new career on it, iykwim....if I get onto that course, I will treat it as a second chance that I will embrace completely and I am now far more able aswell as willing to look into issues, because I am so much more interested in finidng out about the background of things, rather then just knowing the facts without knowing how I got to the point of knowing them!

i work in social housing - i listen to people whinge and moan allt he fucking time and recommend policy improvements that never happen.

no i dont enjoy it but i get amazingly well paid and the hR benefits of the company are second to none.

I'm a new TA in year 2, finding my feet, but liking it so far.

Did the other TA's on here have much teaching experience before they started?

granarybeck · 12/11/2007 21:14

Custardo, do you work for a housing association or council?

Tortington · 12/11/2007 21:15

housing association - why?

yogimum · 12/11/2007 21:15

self-employed maternity nurse, yoga teacher. I only work when I want too which is lovely after spending most of my life having to work.

Hulababy · 12/11/2007 21:17

I work as an Information, Advice and Guidance worker in a prison. I work PT, 3 days a week. I find the work really interesting. Just a shame it is over an hour's drive away.

DanielJohnston · 12/11/2007 21:18

Believe it or not I test condoms.

DaddyJ · 12/11/2007 21:18

I work in Technology and Sales.
Pays the bills and is reasonably good fun.
I work to live, by and large.

Beauregard · 12/11/2007 21:20

I support adults with profound learning disabilites and challenging behaviours.
I love it but am now facing redundancy

Jojay · 12/11/2007 21:21

I'm a Visual Manager in a department store.

I get to dress windows and make things look pretty all day long (well, 3 days a week)

I love it. I've done various jobs within the dept store chain I work for, but this one is by far the most fun!!!!

granarybeck · 12/11/2007 21:21

Sorry custardo, wasn't just being nosey. Not mad about my current job but hr/working arrangements are a lot to give up (civil service). I'd seen a few housing jos with housing assocs but hadn't realised the hr terms would be good there too. Cheers.

Sunshinemummy · 12/11/2007 21:24

I'm a Programme Partner in IT for a large financial service company. I have loved it until recently but some new, horrible people are now trying to take over and it has become more chore than pleasure.

ScareBear · 12/11/2007 21:27

used to be a vet nurse but retrained as a radiographer when ds1 was 4. had intentions of working at a vet school as a radiographer but ds2 came along and dont want to move just yet. working pt now which is a good balance

prettymum · 12/11/2007 21:28

work part time in boots, i was enjoying it till recently theres been a lot of break ins, last one saturday night and i had to open up with another colleague without no security on sunday and i just cant stop thinking what if those people were still in the store when we were counting the money. im too scared to walk around the top bit of the store by myself!

HaveYourselfaNortyLittleXmas · 12/11/2007 21:29

Scientist - and love it....and when I go back after my mat leave in 3 weeks, I'm going PART-TIM............ YAY.....

choosyfloosy · 12/11/2007 21:31

i'm retraining as a speech and language therapist - will be 42 when I graduate. Hope to work for 30 years more, if i'm allowed

Loving the course.

OverMyDeadBody · 12/11/2007 21:31

I love what I do coz I'm the managing director (i.e. boss!)
But the pressure can be a bit much sometimes, and juggling work and being a single parent is constantly hard. There is always so much to do and DS comes to work with me after school, comes to meetings with me, meets clients with me... Wish it was easier.

LucyElasticband · 12/11/2007 21:41

drowntrodden nhs worker

llareggub · 12/11/2007 22:35

HR bod and yes, I do enjoy it

Quattrocento · 12/11/2007 22:37

Gosh under milkwood. You've taken me back 20 years.

nappyaddict · 12/11/2007 22:51

I am a waitress. It's ok - not my true vocation

I want to be a Social Worker or Occupational Therapist.

purplehighheels · 12/11/2007 22:58

I'm a school nurse. Loving nursing a lot more now that I have left the back breaking, soul destroying hospital environment!

peacelily · 12/11/2007 23:07

Hiya, I'm a nurse therapist for ckids with emotional problems, training in CBT at the mo. Love the "therapy bits" but hate all the NHS bulls**t that goes with it.
