Good afternoon, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

@thegcatsmother

Thanks Nelllyy - am about to depart. Chairman Miaow is cross at being shut in; prefer he is indoors if we are all out, and he is in disgrace having decided to regurgitate his rump steak at 0300 this morning.
Oh poor Chairman Miaow, but 3am. 😁😠❤️

We did nine miles today, though Junior was easily distracted by backache messages wishing him happy birthday. Then we came across Mr S, a customer of his demanding to know if his pills would be ready in Monday. Junior was polite and told him he'd be better off calling in the pharmacy after lunch on Monday and maybe they would be in then.

We've had a lovely roast chicken and banoffee pie for pudding. What are you having for pudding today?

DistantShores1 · 18/10/2020 14:35

Oh, yum yum GramGram, banoffee pie. Just one of my favourites. No dessert for me today but I'm going to try an apple crumble cake later in the week.

TeflonTits · 18/10/2020 14:48

Just breezing through to leave jaffa cakes and say afternoon!

Nelllyyy · 18/10/2020 14:50

I wonder how soon it will be before we reach 1000 posts?, we are nearly there. 😁

DorisLessingsLesson · 18/10/2020 14:51

Good afternoon everybody! Thanks for the OTD and the breakfast. We had frittata for lunch and I've just realised I was probably influenced by all the gorgeous breakfast photos posted on here. Grin

DS plays rugby too and is tiny. I worry every single time but the school coaches and referees are excellent when playing in-house. Sadly, that's not the case when they used to play other schools but his school is happy to let him opt out of external games and, because of Covid, there aren't any atm anyway.

Afternoon Teffy.

👍🏻 for the Jaffa cakes. 😋❤️

thegcatsmother · 18/10/2020 15:10

Get to Mum to change the bed, and she hasn't even got the fresh bedding out! Changed it and got home; 6 hour pork in oven, so no other culinary activity (apart from wielding the teapot) needed for the next couple of hours.

StormzyinaTCup · 18/10/2020 15:44

Just popping in to say 👋 and hope everyone is doing ok.

Thanks as always Lily for your OTDs. There is so much history out there (particularly with regard to inspiring women) that I just didn’t know about.

Pretty standard Sunday afternoon at Chez Stormzy, plenty of pottering going on. I am stopping now for a cuppa which is perfect timing as Teflon has just put out the Jaffa Cakes😋. Hope no one minds if I grab a handful couple to keep me going.

DistantShores1 · 18/10/2020 16:04

Careful Teffy, you may get the job of CJP - Chief Jaffacake Provider 😬

lakeswimmer · 18/10/2020 16:24

Thanks Lily and Tracy for OTD and breakfast, also Teflon for the afternoon jaffa cakes Smile

Blimey, Timothy Evans's story is a sorry one.

An uneventful day here - been out to buy a bath and other bathroom fittings as we're getting our bathroom done up in a week or two. As much as I love interior design I just can't get myself interested in choosing taps...

ZombieFan · 18/10/2020 17:21

BakedCam Just saw AB, actually I can agree he was impressive.

But... lol, I cant agree with his argument. Either the situation is not so bad that level 3 lockdown isn't needed or the situation is so dire that the whole country needs to go into a full lockdown for 3 weeks but possibly a lot longer.

I was going to watch Lawrence Fox on the Jeremy Vine show on Channel 5 on Wednesday, but its not on 'catchup'. Strange as all the other episodes are.

So twitter informs me that Channel 5 are refusing to release the episode... apparently Yasmin Alibhai-Brown called him the incredible hulk, a racist and all sorts of nasty things. Fox said he would sue. Yasmin withdrew her comment but refused to apologise.

Fox is now cancelled from Channel 5 and we cant see the episode to make our own mind up what happened. [shakes head]

TracysShoulder · 18/10/2020 17:36

Teflon, there's a job going in the BC for an afternoon jaffa cake pastry chef manager. Would you be interested, seeing as you're already doing the job? Grin The pay is good and the perks are, well, let me just leave this here...

Pics enlarge if you click on them. The 2nd pic is a vegan cake shop in Exeter.

Good evening BCers.
Satisfying day here really. I had a lot of desk type work to do and I made myself sit and get it done despite the fact that it was not raining and I could have gone for a walk or faffed about pretending to get the garden beds ready for winter.
I hope you all enjoyed your day and I hope Gcats enjoyed the pork. She certainly deserved it.

thegcatsmother · 18/10/2020 18:26

The pork has had almost 4 hours, then the spuds go in with it, leave another hour, add garlic, carrots, onions (and I'll add some squash as well as some parsnips), another 30 minutes, then add apples and pears, and then 30 minutes hates and it's done. Will feed the three of us over two days.

Have also done the tax return, with last year's calendar at hand, as I have a split year for tax residence and had to calculate how many days in each country. Then I had to work out the profit from.letting the house and write that off against the losses from previous years. Hopefully, this will be the last ITR I have to do for a while.

LilyLangtrey · 18/10/2020 19:58

Evening, everyone.

We are nearly at the end of the thread already! It has been lovely seeing so many friends chatting about life in general, just as we have always done. I will start the next thread in a little while so please sign in if you are around - same board, same place.

It has been a bumpy day so I am terribly behind with all of my plans - everything I had wanted to achieve today has been thrown back. However, after much furious paddling, I think I am back on track, but just delayed, so bear with me. I haven't even written my OTD for tomorrow Shock

Never known before.

I have had to give Dizzy back to his owner, you see. MrL and I are heartbroken but although he clearly took to us, he was missing his mum too much. It has been a hard few days and I have had next to no sleep. I will tell you more in the next thread - I'll start it in a minute.

Bear with me for a day or two longer. Normal service will be resumed. Smile

Oh that is a shame about Dizzy . As long as everyone is happy, all is fine .
You must be frazzled, Lily .

LilyLangtrey · 18/10/2020 20:03

Here is the next thread.

Probably time for a mocktail. I know I could do with one! Please join me.

See you on here in the morning. Onward and upward!

We will be fine. Just a little unexpected setback but nothing I can't deal with. All will be well in Langtry Towers. Smile

Hi Zombie,

The problem with GM is where it is located geographically. Many of the boroughs border Lancashire and Liverpool with some of the residents crossing country borders for work. Now that Lancashire have gone ahead into Tier 3 measures, which are strict, AB is arguing for public health and economics. Scientists rarely examine the economic impact nor are they obliged to, but we must not pretend there is not an economic impact as a result of lockdowns. AB is arguing for that with some blue boroughs backing his argument. (That doesn't stop the government from unilaterally making their move on moving GM into Tier 3 I suspect No 10 is unwilling to exercise that authority. I'd almost lay a tenner on it being due to the reason of civil disobedience)

Lancashire and Liverpool now surround some of the GM boroughs. Some of the GM boroughs are sandwiched right in the armpit of Lancashire and Liverpool. This is an interesting time for the GM region. There are 62 people in the ICU units compared to 200 at the peak. What I'm saying is that he has shown some gumption, No 10 needed a challenger and right now that is AB.

I'm in Tier 3. I'm 16 miles from a Borough of Manchester.

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown? 😆 I'm surprised LF even went up against her. She is painful. But that is painful it is not available for us to ponder over.

I'll have to look if I can see anything. So Ch5 have cancelled Fox but kept YAB? Can't believe she is still on the telly or anybody reads her drivel.

DistantShores1 · 18/10/2020 20:10

Aw Lily, so sorry to hear about Dizzy. I'm sure it wasn't for the want of a warm welcome or TLC.

Time for us BCers to give you some of your own advice. Be kind to yourself, take a breather. It won't be the end of the world to give the OTDs a miss until you catch your breath.
You've certainly gave us plenty to keep us reading.

Take care MrsL xx
