Good afternoon, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Yes Nelly.

Colin was reduced to £1.24 the other week, I nearly bought an army of them but worried I would look like Verucca Salt, given the short use by date.

BakedCam · 13/10/2020 12:40

Catsmother I would happily share with the Clunkers. If you want Sacher Torte, I can order for you through my brother. Buy direct from Hotel Sacher.

GreenSkin · 13/10/2020 12:51

That Sacher Torte looks gorgeous Cam .

I find it hard recognising everyone too .

LilyLangtrey · 13/10/2020 12:58

Stop making me hungry, you lot! 😆

Maggie was a conviction politician. So were Tony Benn, Keir Hardie, Winston Churchill, RA Butler. The strength of their principles divided opinion but they all did good things and bad. Those who call Churchill racist should go and have a look at Keir Hardie's record. Keir Hardie was indisputably racist. He was also a good friend to Emmeline Pankhurst and brought Emily Davison's torture to the attention of the HoC, leading to pressure for change. I think it is perfectly possible to acknowledge the good they did while simultaneously deploring the bad, otherwise how will we ever learn from those who went before us? And at least with a conviction politician, you know exactly where you stand with them. They don't sit on the fence, chop and change, flip flop, or try to rewrite their own history. Like them or loathe them, you know what you get with them.

Anyway, in lighter news...

Dizzy the cat has arrived! He settled on the sofa for a snooze while his mum was here - she was holding back the tears - but once she said her goodbyes, he ran and is now hiding behind the sofa. It's OK. MrL is a cat whisperer and when the time is right, will coax him out. We are just going to let him settle at his own pace.

I'm just going to catch up with the others now while I have a minute. See you later...

(Worried about Nessa).

I haven't thought about breakfast - feeling rather disconbobulated after recent events. I'm making a small wedding cake - it's quite a bit smaller than planned, sadly.

MissSarahThane · 13/10/2020 13:01

Afternoon all. Another Zoom class done and dusted. Arm a bit sore after flu jab yesterday.

Ancestry is offering free access until midnight Sunday for the 1911 Census. You only need a name to start searching - and a rough idea of how old the person was, or where they lived, or who they lived with, to be sure you have the right person. You can look up anyone who was alive and living in the UK then, they don't have to be related to you. There were quite a few people called Winston Churchill!

NessalovesSmithy · 13/10/2020 13:12

I'm OK thank you Lily, watching MT - episode 3.

meercat23 · 13/10/2020 13:26

Lily, I agree entirely about conviction politician. They make decisions based on their beliefs and not on the expediencies (?) of party politics or their own interests. I am not a tory by any stretch of the imagination but I always greatly respected Sir Keith Joseph even though i did not agree with him much.

Hope Dizzy settles and feels at home quickly.

Crankley · 13/10/2020 13:29

Afternoon everyone, hope you are all safe and well.

Sorry your kidneys are giving you hell Nessa and hope the GP can sort them out PDQ.

Thanks to Lily for the great OTD and to Tracy for the yummy breakfast.

If Admin of the other place decided not to continue that's their choice but it would have been nice to have been given some warning so we could gather ourselves together, so to speak.

I searched for the other place on Red. It said you have to be invited so I wrote a message to the Mod yesterday but have heard nothing so still can't access. I would appreciate someone letter me know if they think it's good and worth pursuing for access.

It's lovely to see new members of the BC, I hope you stay and enjoy this oasis in a pool of sharks.

Many thanks to Lily for managing to gather us all, or most of us, together. Mr.L will think you've found yourself a full time job. Smile

Crankley · 13/10/2020 13:30

letting, not letter - oh for edit.

Onprozacandmyhighhorse · 13/10/2020 13:31

My first day and I managed to miss breakfast with you all completely! I've been going round in circles all morning and getting nowhere fast (with work that is). Tomorrow I will defo join in.

Crankley · 13/10/2020 13:35

We have pizzas on Thursday, afternoon, don't miss that.

thefatladyscreams · 13/10/2020 13:38

Another refugee who wasn’t on the original BC looking for shelter. Mainly posted on the HaM thread on the other place but was starting to explore and loved the friendly vibe and warmth and wit. Feeling disproportionately cut off.

Thank you so much for your efforts Lily.

TeflonTits · 13/10/2020 13:47

Crankley, I'll let her know that shes got people knocking on the door to get in, but she's currently off doing something at the moment. Dont want to elucidate more than that on here obviously.

Nelllyyy · 13/10/2020 13:51

@NessalovesSmithy

Yes Nelly.

Colin was reduced to £1.24 the other week, I nearly bought an army of them but worried I would look like Verucca Salt, given the short use by date.

Oh wow I would have bought and eaten the whole lot, not really, Mr Nelly did bring home a Trolls Birthday Cake that was originally about £14.00, it was reduced to 99p but had to be eaten that day, it lasted 3 days in our house and was sickly as hell, we ended up throwing it out for Mr Fox. 🦊

Lily, I hope Dizzy settles soon and will be a wonderful bundle of joy.

I found one of us on the confusing place, I left a comment saying we were here, the old BC, hopefully she has found us, maybe recognised my name.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 13/10/2020 13:57

Is it too late for a piece of Sacher cake? I love Sacher cake.

That reminds me of a story a guide told me when I was in Vienna with my late grandmother many, many years ago (no idea if it is true).

A man was staying at Hotel Sacher and was complaining that he had found a cockroach in his room. When he showed the receptionist, she allegedly called the porter and said “please take this gentleman’s bag, he is checking out immediately. He has brought a cockroach to Hotel Sacher”.

Hi TeflonTits 👋. Still like the name, I remember when you changed to it.

DistantShores1 · 13/10/2020 14:01

Checking in.

Thanks to Lily and Tracy for some semblance of normality.

It was a confusing and swift end to the other place.
I'm not entirely convinced this is the right place for me as I had deleted my account a few weeks ago over the aggressiveness and nasty attitudes of the new corner posters.

I may just lurk for the time being, but thank you to Lily for rounding us all up and keeping us together.

I hope all those who've been poorly continue on their road to recovery.
To our new guests, welcome. I hope you enjoy being part of The New Breakfast Club

Take care all.

Crankley · 13/10/2020 14:02

Appreciate it Teflon, thanks.

Lily are we going to get a pic of Dizzy at some point?

MoreHippo -It's never too late for cake. A butler will arrive shortly with a slice or two.

Nelllyyy · 13/10/2020 14:08

Is Douce on here yet?, she is also looking fir us, I left her a comment, hopefully she will see it and find us.

No doubt I will receive nasty comments about being a racist/bully for being a member of the old site.

TeflonTits · 13/10/2020 14:15

Nelly, Douce is over at the confusing place with some of us.

Crankley · 13/10/2020 14:16

Sticks and stones, Nelllyyy. Fortunately words can't harm us if we don't allow them to linger in our mind. I visualise them written on a bit of paper which I then 'throw back' at the person/poster with some force.

AgentSwift · 13/10/2020 14:25

Can’t get my head round the confusing place (might make the effort now though). Another refugee, I wasn’t on the BC thread on t’other place but wish I had been 😊

My name was nothing like this one (random pick whilst hurriedly reregged last night) - it was Friday Night Dinner related 🐿

It’s nice to find some of you again 👋

realitychick67 · 13/10/2020 14:26

Afternoon all... I'm still mired in work, but wanted to pop my head round the door. Hope everyone is holding out OK... turning out to be a mighty odd week eh. wry smile
