Un libro fantastico: Milena Agus 'Mal di pietre'.

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2007 22:47

Pippi, what a coincidence, a good friend of mine has just recommended that book to me! .
I don't have an nhs dentist here, we've been on the waiting list forever, so got ourself a lovely private practice, which is as expensive as a private one in Italy, maybe a bit more in pounds, iyswim...
It was lovely here today, lovely sun, took the dc to fare la merenda in the little park qui dietro and nearly burst into tears talking to ds's headteacher, when talking about us leaving .

Don't worry, I won't leave before knowing all the facts about tv . Ds is at school until the 21st of December, I think we'll move then, even though dh will work until early february. I'm very sad tonight, tbh.

Franca hope you are feeling a bit better today ?? It must be hard for you making such a big move and the dcs moving as well. But Natale with i nonni must be a good thing for them .
Sunny today but oh boy is it getting cooler. DD has runny nose and it is not getting better ..1st of many I think

PippiCalzelunghe · 16/10/2007 18:29

yes franca I thought especially of you when read that book. I am 100% sure you'll love it, it is soo soo tiny (unfortunately) that can be read in one day.
another two good ones that have been recommended to me while away are: 'mille anni che sto qui' di mariolina venezia e 'danubio' non so l'autore ma e un triestino and he was about to win the nobel or something (heard it on the radio). i haven't read them and like an idiot did not buy them either so now have to wait till i go to pg in november (too stingy to order them through IBS).

I can understand your sadness franca but you'll be fine after the first few weeks.

I personally would find it very difficult to move back. not for any practical reason, just I cannot see DD raised as a 100% italian. it's difficult to explain and maybe stupid as I am 100% italian but when I was watching italian teenagers about last week I was happy DD will be different. I am sure I'll regret this very much when she'll be out drinking at 16 and when she'll say 'what do you know mamma you're not english!'.

I ma still at work so I am going to head off home.

francagoestohollywood · 16/10/2007 18:46

I'm okay today rosa, thanks . and how are you feeling re homesick etc? are you seeing your relatives some time soon? have you heard from the nursery yet?

Pippi, I think the author of Danubio is Claudio Magris. he is indeed very good and great conoscitore of anything asburgico. Ellbell is an expert as well, I think.

I see what you mean Pippi. I do find teenagers scary and menacing on both sides of the pond. Weird. I had a very uncomplicated teenagedom.

I was a bit of a wild teenager so I hope dd will not get that from me. Nonni and nipotina are arriving on Thursday so am very very about that. They are staying in a locanda as we cannot manage 5 plus dd in our flat but nipotina ( 10 anni) might come and stay with us for a few nights we will see.
Glad you are feeling a bit better now ..Am sure it will be ok in the end .
Pippi tutto ok with the pg when is your next scan ?

francagoestohollywood · 16/10/2007 20:28

at Rosa being a wild teenager! I'd have never guessed you were! How lovely your parents and nipotina are visiting so soon, I bet dd will love being with her big cousin.
Thing is, that I was (at last!) starting to feel settled here .
Anyway, I'll come and see you in Venice !

Pippi - I sooo understand the thing about not wanting your DD to become an Italian teenager, all the ones I see are figli di papà and don't know how to do anything except use their mobile phones. You can just see they're going to be living at home until they're 40. On the other hand I don't want DD to become a binge drinker and go out in the winter in a mini skirt and no tights either (that might not be an option anyway if she's inherited my hairy legs). So, insomma, I don't know where I want her to grow up. Maybe we should move to Spain or somewhere...

Franca - I'm finding out about the skybox too, have asked someone who told me it was easy to get me all the details. Oh, and talking of hairy legs, did you get the ceretta done? Was it any good? There's a new salon opening in Monza soon so I might give that a try, hopefully they'll be from Milan or somewhere that knows how to wax [exasperated emoticon].

francagoestohollywood · 17/10/2007 12:38

Brange, I had the ceretta done, yes, in via Giulio Romano, and I thought it was pretty good. 35 euros for full leg and bikini.
I think teenagers get a bad press everywhere. Don't think all the Italian ones are figli di papa' or the english binge drinkers. Some of them are actually quite sweet. But you have to move from Monza !!! (I'm pulling your leg)
I want to know everything about the skybox thingy either, even if I forgot to ask if my new condominio has a sky dish or if we are allowend to put one on the balcone that looks onto the garden.

OP posts:
Brangelina · 17/10/2007 12:50

Yes, I must get away from Monza, at least in Milan the teenagers were a healthy mix of figli di papà and tamarretti .

As soon as I have the gen on the skybox I'll let you know. Do you already have a sky contract in the UK? Do you know someone who has who is willing to get a second box for you to use? I think if you have a balcony you can put what you like on it, as it's your private property. You could always surround it with plants.

Rosa · 17/10/2007 13:30

Ceretta Bikini -.OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW I managed half leg 4 times in a row and then gave up as it wasn't working and it hurt just too much and my skin did not like it ! The thought of bikini or underarm just makes me cringe !
DD saw Grandma on Skype yesterday and now every time she sees a plane she says ranma plane ! Bless .
Skybox I want it I want it . My parents do not have sky so I can use their address if needed they have freeview only. So please make sure I see the post when you find more about it.
LOL re UK teenagers. 2 Xmas ago Dh and I went to a concert . After in the chineese we had a window seat and it was just up from a nightclub. We sat and watched as they all trooped past in short sleeves, slinky dresses, bare legs , sandals and then queued up to get in. We were in winter coats and scarves . Do they not have cloakrooms nowadays ??

Brangelina · 17/10/2007 13:38

Cloakrooms cost Rosa, even I remember braving mid winter temperatures in short sleeves so as not to pay the £1 or whatever it was at the time for the cloakroom. In my defence though I never went for the marbled leg and white stilettos look.

I signed up for Skype too but my lot are too dithery to use it, so we just end up with massive phone bills.

I thought with the Skybox you needed someone who already has sky, so they can just order the "free" second box. Or is that not true? If you know something more accurate then please tell all!

Rosa · 17/10/2007 14:06

No you diddn't wear white stilettos I am very about that - I was more a black pointed toe boot with a single studded belt ( thought the 3 tier ones far too OUT !). When we went to clubs we used to stuff jumpers in somebodys coat ( down the sleeve)to avoid paying lots ! But my era was the fingerless gloves and scarves so I guess we were a bit more covered up !

Re Sky Uk Only thing I had heard was that the parabola had to be turned in another direction to get the UK sky but since this came up on here am nagging DH to try and look further into it. ( Nag Nag Nag )

Rosa · 17/10/2007 14:07

We have Italian Sky btw for what that is worth ..I asked about getting sport just for the weekend thought maybe we could pay a month subscription or whatever Not a hope its a year minimum.. All we want to see isteh rugby final !

francagoestohollywood · 17/10/2007 15:04

PippiCalzelunghe · 17/10/2007 19:22

oh yes the marble legs... italians always wonder what's that all about .

all I can tell you is that when I see teenagers in italy of any shape or form they remind me of myself and how stupid I was in thinking how clever I was... that's why it pains me. I am sure you all have this cringing memories... and teenagerdom is sooo full of them wherever you are!! difference is the english teens do no remind me of me.

I'd def want english tv if I were to move back, for evening like this one, without DH, with pizza on the sofa, with supernanny, location location and dispatches. ahhhh bliss....

PippiCalzelunghe · 17/10/2007 19:24

rosa waxing not that bad. done first time last year... bearable!

oh and I too want to watch rugby final. all of a sudden I like rugby. I am an english supporter when it comes to rugby, 100% italian when euro or world cup on.

PippiCalzelunghe · 17/10/2007 19:24
