My DH tops the lot he was up at 03.15 AM and will be working until 18.00 today !!!
It has been happening a bit this month this means he will not be on this planet domani either !!
Oh I want to know more about skybox . We have a satelite but the parabola apparently or so I thought had to be turned in another direction to get the 'UK signals'. On my satelite I get BBC Prime ( lots of repeats and things on at silly times). Then we get discovery channels, Fox, Sky Vivo , Hallmark and several hundred others. For Dd Disney ( hundreds of repeats ) , Toon disney, Jum Jam , Yo yo - Some BBc programs but only in Italian. But I miss proper Uk telly !!
Franca have you found asili etc etc ? As for Stricia I changed channels to Papi last night

Brangelina · 10/10/2007 13:06

Cali - what's this slingbox thing they're talking about on the other thread? Is it just an american thing or can it be used here too?

Hellooo Franca

rosa, my inlaws have sky as well, which is good for repeats of "a place in he sun" , but bbc prime is a bit crappola. I want c4!
as per asili... I'm visiting the english school today, and tomorrow I'll visit a scuola materna privata quite near our flat, which seems amazing! Have yuo found something for dd rosa?

When will you be back Franca? Must be great wandering the streets of Milan without kids in tow. Doing an awful translation today!

Rosa · 12/10/2007 12:32

We might have but are waiting to hera as and when there could be a place available they are not very flexible though . Anyway we will see.
Are you managing to d any wandering for yourself in Milano ..Hair dresser etc etc ?
Keep at it Med hope it gets easier.

francagoestohollywood · 12/10/2007 16:49

I'm travelling back on sunday. I've been walking miles and miles, my legs are killing me now. I did manage to go to hairdresser and see some friends. It's still very warm. Went to see a lovely scuola materna today (private aas the asilo comunale told me there is no way I'll find places until sept), they even take them swimming once a week!I'm all over the place re choosing what to do, I'd really like them to keep their english, but the posh english school is v. expensive.
hotmed, coraggio!!! translating can be utterly boring.

OP posts:
hotHELL · 12/10/2007 20:48

Thank you for support. Really struggling with this piece of tosh. HOw would you translate in Italian: "You are a good girl for trying", context is a dad praising his daughter!

hotHELL · 12/10/2007 20:50

Private school? And I thought you were a Communist. Does it mean you will mixing with the footballers' wives? You will have to do something about that hat of yours then!

francagoestohollywood · 13/10/2007 19:54

hothell, nonono!. I ruled out the posh English school, but I have to find something for them from January to june, as there is no place at the scuola materna comunale. Found a private asilo, very nice, but down to earth, I think, I hope. From september it's hopefully going to be prima elementare statale for ds and scuola materna comunale for dd.

no italian would say you are a good girl for trying ! i don't know, brava per averci provato?

OP posts:
hotHELL · 14/10/2007 18:42

The Brits are obsessed about praising the effort kids make, the Italian don't have a clue. I try to do it with ds, but always say it in English, it is just not an Italian concept.

Rosa · 15/10/2007 08:07

Hotmed ..really I had not noticed but as dd is too young to be in that stage yet . Can you exp more ..am interested seeing as I was always a player and not a winner so this was said rather alot to me as a child!!!

hotHELL · 15/10/2007 09:59

The idea is that it is better to praise the effort when children are doing something, not only the achievement, so they learn that the important thing is to try to do things and as long as they try their best and work hard, they are doing well.

hotHELL · 15/10/2007 10:00

I notice they do it at my ds' school, teachers give grades first to the effort children have made and then to their achievement.

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2007 10:15

I'm baaaack!
Yes, they do it at ds's school as well, and I think it's really important to help them understand that the process to achieve something is more important that the achievement itself. (Arg! 6 days in Italy and my English is worse than ever!).
Mind you that I find some people go OTT with this praising business, I once overheard a mum at sainsburys telling her son "well spotted!". too much .
PIPPI are you back? (I went to ricordi the otehr day and they have the dvds of anna dai capelli rossi, daitan 3, lady oscar and georgie)

OP posts:
hotHELL · 15/10/2007 11:04

Lady Oscar? Lovely....
Did you find a flat then? Have you sold your Exeter one?

hotHELL · 15/10/2007 11:21

Is it the 8th our Italian meeting?

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2007 12:04

Yes, we found a flat to rent, small, but in a nice area. Our house is on the market...
Is the 8 a saturday or sunday? I'm going to travel to london early on sat morning (dh is away for a conference and is back on friday). we can either meet on sat lunchtime or sunday morning. I'm quite flexible. I was thinking of coming with the bus instead of train, it's cheaper, and I will feel less guilty if I give in to a bit of london shopping

OP posts:
Rosa · 15/10/2007 12:44

Thanks but I was wondering more about your comment saying that they don't do it so much in Italy .. I had just assumed that they did. I agree its great as I said I was one of those who took part but never won in just about most things but went to a school that praised winners so found it tough !
So Franca tutto posto for Milano then ?

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2007 13:56

don't know really rosa... praising in general doesn't seem to be a typically Italian activity. As for many many things in Italy it's up to the individual, so, you will indeed find a maestra who's great at doing so, and others who are rubbish. However, my experience is that Italian schools are in general far less "competitive" than many English ones.
In my case, I'd say that it would have been useful if my mother actually praised me for trying rather than the school. Also I can remember that - at least al liceo - the impegno to improve one's grades were def taken into account.
Si, A milano tutto ok. I really enjoyed. It'll be hard getting used to the traffic though.

Oh well we will see when the time happens. Glad all is sorted well for you and I know the traffic is a bit of a shock I find that as well when I go onto the mainland and have to concentrate!
When is Pippi back ..also nothing from Ellbell or Jane for a while ..Hope all ok

PippiBloodyStump · 15/10/2007 20:00

yes I am back, after I've eaten the whole of Friuli!! also been to the hairdresser and dentist (regular 'tappa' when at dad's).

not sure about the praising in italy, never thought about it too much. it would have certainly have helped if dad had praised us more for trying than achieving. I am praising dd often I must say, easier now that she's so small though!

l've got anna e lady oscar [pathetic emoticon]. need heidi as video's broken and candy candy [even more patetic emoticon].

Ah, DD is out of nappies 100%. no accidents even on plane etc

Rosa · 15/10/2007 20:06

Well done Pippi's DD .. Brava . SO I take it Pippi you were eating for 2 ? And the dentista doesnt it cost less in the UK ??All well I guess you have a really good time.

PippiBloodyStump · 15/10/2007 20:14

I am sure it is cheaper, especially when you're pg, shouldn't be free? it's just that never got round to find a dentist here and I really like dad's one (and he pays for it). TBH I think it's more the case of feeling spoilt and all arranged for you for a few days. for once I don't have to book and run and call etc.

I am eating more, def. will try to contain myself here but almost impossible when home as I want to taste everything I missed here, like tagliata con rucola e parmigiano, gnocchi di zucca, polenta e funghi trifolati, prosciutto, polenta e baccala, speck, risotto con tartufo, coppa del nonno, cachi... hmmm yummi.
