If it helps anyone I just went to Asda in Gloucester and they've got tonnes of bottled water- limited to 30 litres per household- and our milk man is delivering bottles of water too. Asda are limiting each household to 6 pints of water and 3 loaves of bread as well- cue loads of arguments and staff confiscating items from shoppers who were far from impressed...I got out fast!

Fingers crossed we keep our electricity on. Does anyone know how much worse it's going to get? Dh has cycled to work but I suspect he may be home early

(is it really shallow that my main concern atm is how I'm going to wash my hair? )

magnolia1 · 23/07/2007 11:01

We are contaminated in Surrey too.

Furball · 23/07/2007 12:48

just heard - if you still have water out the tap from Severn Trent - to boil it first to be on the safe side.

elesbells · 23/07/2007 12:50

they say on the news its the whole M4 corridor have you heard the same?

Furball · 23/07/2007 14:02

bowsers have run out and there isn't enough for cheltenham and tewkesbury is only getting bottles.

currantbunmum · 23/07/2007 15:39

We have had no word where to find any water in Cheltenahm, and are now down to 14litres, for absolutely everything.

I've been talking to someone connected to the water treatment and they seem to think that 72hours without water would be lucky, places like Chelt. and Glos. towns would be reconnected first and the unlucky souls out in the sticks (me included) could be off for upto 7 days!

Anyone up for a greasy haired, dirty chilren, a bit smeely round the edges get together, as nursery closed and children going nuts on diet of cbeebies, and lack of fresh air and fresh fruit?

Furball · 23/07/2007 15:42

I know! they are saying maybe 7-14 days without fresh water and all the bowsers have been given to Gloucester! Probably a good time to go on holiday.

Furball · 23/07/2007 15:43

I don't get how say the hospitals will operate (no pun intended)

kittylouise · 23/07/2007 15:45

I am in Bishop's Cleeve and we have had no water all day, Tesco has none (and is a war zone, by the way) and I have no idea where to get any. Plus both cars destroyed in floods over the weekend so can't drive into Cheltenham or wherever and get some!
Also heard in Tesco that the electric supply to Bishop's Cleeve is about to be cut off!!?? I am hoping that it is all panic gossip...
A horrific weekend - my DP has a house in Gloucester which he rents out, submerged in 6 feet of water on Friday, everything in it destroyed, including a couple of motorbikes and cars. Loss Adjuster says that it could be up to 6 months before it is habitable again!
At least we are OK though, feel so sorry for the people in Tewkesbury.

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 15:46

Severn SOund had a list of what supermarkets had what supplies earlier (about lunhc time?). Think Stroud and Coleford had quite a lot left but that was few hours ago. Many places had run out but they were talking about more deliveries at lunch time (Asda one of them). Dh's office has enough water to last 3 days and they've been told they have enough supplies for staff to take some home...no idea how that works! We've got aobut 25 litres of bottled water and several large and small bottles and jugs of tap water from yesterday (and bath full to flush toilet) so I'm hoping we'll be OK. MIL visiting this week so should be heaps of fun

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 15:47

THink hospitals have cancelled routine appointments and operations...

noddyholder · 23/07/2007 15:48

I am really sorry for you all How can we be so unprepared for this?

kittylouise · 23/07/2007 15:48

Plus I am a fool and didn't have the foresight to fill the bath up with water before the supply was cut off. Have avoided going to the loo all day because I won't be able to flush them...!

I am glad that I am not the only one who is worried about not washing my hair, as well!

kittylouise · 23/07/2007 15:53

Haylstones - don't you now have the PERFECT excuse to avoid the MIL visit!?

Is quite scary how unprepared this country is for disasters.

I read in the paper today that the Ministry of Defence were unwilling to supply lorries/drivers etc to supply sandbags, water and supplies to stricken areas because they were unable to secure payment from the environment agency or whoever deals with these kind of things. What the hell is all that about??

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 15:54

Not alone Kitty, I'm just trying to work out ow to do it! Think I might boil the kettle and get dh to help me do it in the kitchen sink (still have some water in the tank as well but obviously can't drink it!)

I shouted on dd this morning and she replied from the downstairs loo where she was doing a really stinky poo (despite me telling her to do them upstairs as we have a bath full of water to flush up there). Dh scarpered before she'd finished but luckily there was just ebough water left in the cistern to flush it.
It's hard to believe it's actually this bad

SaintGeorge · 23/07/2007 15:56

Take care flushing toilets, even if doing with buckets of water. If the water is rising in your area then you may get back wash.

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 15:58

I haven't flushed the toilet yet today despite having pg bladder (enough said)

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 15:58

But thank you for advice saintgeorge

SaintGeorge · 23/07/2007 15:59

When we had the floods, we taught the boys the good old rhyme from the 70s water shortages:

"If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down"

Unfortunately they went round singing it for days, full volume

thebigSea · 23/07/2007 16:01

and there's me moaning because we have no milk...
We're in Herefordshire, so know all about worcester, tewkesbury and cheltenham [my mum lives there] we [as a town] were cut off friday and saturday but ok now, we haven't been directly affected and my heart goes out to all those who have.
People panic buying all weekend so thats why
there's no bread, milk water or fuel. Bloody idiots.

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 16:04

YEs, didn't quite understand why Asda had limits on amount of bread and milk you can buy- is it because people are panic buying in case we get cut off again and supplies can't get through? Can't think why else. We don't get through much bread and have enough milk to last until Friday so I didn't think of buying any today

kittylouise · 23/07/2007 16:04

I called my mum this morning (who lives in Devon) and told her the whole saga, she burst out laughing and told me to look at it as one of life's adventures (not big on sympathy, my mum!)

Her advice on the loo situation was to go to (a) hold it in for as long as possible or (b) go in a bucket and keep it in the garden. Cheers, mum.

thebigSea · 23/07/2007 16:08

my friend said she would get me [gasp shock horror] formular milk for my dd [18 mths] so she won't be without, the ds's are older and have yoghurt drinks they could have at bedtime which leaves me, pregnant with a frosties fetish.....

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 16:09

Lol, my mum just goes all philiosophical and says 'there's no point in getting worked up over it, it won't change it and nothing you do will make any difference'. Well Ok mum I'll just ignore the fact that there is water raging towards my house because I can't stop it.
If we lose power I'm taking dd to a hotel in BRistol or somewhere. We're meant to be collecting MIL from Bristol airport tomorrow morning but I'm not sure if it's wise but ppublic transport might not be great either. Flight non refundable.

Haylstones · 23/07/2007 16:16

HAve you got a local milk man? Ours was out this morning delivering extra supplies and even delivering bottled water to elderly neighbours. www.milkdeliveries.co.uk/doorstep/
