Update from Severn Trent Water 2020 BST:

With water supplies expected to Lorryloads of bottled water on their way for emergency distribution to people in need at Sainsbury's in Barnett Way, Barnwood, Gloucester and Tesco in Quedgeley.

More than 165 bowsers (mobile water tankers) are being mobilised to provide fresh water to areas in need right across Gloucestershire in the next 12 to 18 hours.

A spokesman said: "It is not just Severn Trent that is working on this. Yorkshire Water, Anglia Water and Thames Water have all offered their services to help the emergency water supply effort and if we may have to call on the military to help distribute water to areas in most need."

Water supplies in Gloucester have started to dry up after a pumping station failed earlier on Sunday. Water supplies to Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and the surrounding villages are said to be likely to fail later

Severn Trent is stressing that NO tap water in the area is contaminated - but flood water IS.

Fresh water supplies - bottled now and bowsers later - are being brought in ONLY to supply water to householders who have no drinking water on tap.

Severn Trent is asking people where possible to avoid contact with flood water which IS contaminated and on no account to play or swim in flood water.

can i pass on to all of you who are having such a terrible time with the flooding ,my utmost sympathy to you all.We are lucky where i live we are not affected, and i cant imaging how upsetting it must be for you all,i hope you all get help quickly.

Furball · 22/07/2007 21:07

I agree totally mummylin, and huge sympathies for anyone who had water in their house. Luckily our village was not effected just passing water in farmers fields from the brooks which when I say swelled, I mean turn from a usual trickle to a 20m wide torrant, to the rivers, which did cut us off. But considering that a massive amount of people are homeless with this and their homes devasted, to go without water for a few days is a better alternative.

Roskva · 22/07/2007 21:28

My sympathies, too. I can't imagine how awful it must be for those of you in flooded areas.

I'm so gormless - I didn't even realise how cut off we are until I went for a walk with the dds today. I knew ours was one of the worst areas, as we'd had a friend over yesterday who'd had to sleep on the M5 Friday night, but she managed to get home yesterday evening and she lives in a very rural area. We live in a city but when we walked down towards town today there were loads of people all walking along the ring roads with their kids - no cars allowed and floodwater cutting us off from town which is the other side of the bridge . There were swans floating by as we walked! I need to get to the shops tomorrow - I wonder how many in town will be open?

The paths near our house had been flooded yesterday as the drains were blocked but the water had subsided quite a bit today. It left HUGE orangey-coloured slugs lying all over the place. I was nearly sick!

silkcushion · 22/07/2007 23:17

EEEEEWWWWW to the slugs Moomin! Which city are you in?

Not sure what is happening with the tap water. Mine is still running but I live just below the reservoir which was the last supply in Gloucestershire. Maybe we're one of the last houses to run out??

DH and I were discussing it earlier and Tesco etc will be shipping shite loads of water in overnight to restock won't they? cos they can make a fortune from the panic buying.

My best friends hubby works for severn trent and he says it could be a week without water and now it looks like the electricity might go off as well for a time - Thinking of you all xxxxx

silkcushion · 22/07/2007 23:27

Is your mum getting out? Cos she probably should you know if she can.

Has your water gone off yet Sweeties?

Hopefully electricity should stay on. They said on the news that The Navy are now helping the fire brigade to protect the electricity substation in Gloucester.

OMG it's like the end of the world!
I'm in Worcs. Will venture into town in a bit. Usually takes 15mins to walk. Will have to take car and is likely to take over half an hour at least as have to use the long way round as main bridge is closed. Will stock up the car with food and drinks for the dds!

edam · 23/07/2007 10:14

Moomin, be careful with the car and don't go into any water that's too deep! Also be wary if you are passing houses, apparently cars cause a bow wave which sends more water in.

My sister and father are in Worcs but fortunately their area not affected so far.

Furball · 23/07/2007 10:19

Moomin - did you know there was a mumsnet meet meal at the swan, whittington on Friday 27th July? You're very welcome to join us. thread Here

BettySpaghetti · 23/07/2007 10:20

Furball -only just found this.

I was wondering if you'd been affected by the water being cut-off. Are you better off where you are (flood-wise) than if you'd been in your old house because most of that town is suffering badly isn't it.

We're not far away if you need anything (although whether we could actually get to each other is another matter I guess?).

Hassled · 23/07/2007 10:23

I don't live anywhere even remotely affected but just wanted to say I'm thinking of all of you who are - I can't imagine how awful it must be for you.

Furball · 23/07/2007 10:32

we're fine thanks betty. Yes we're better off here as out in the sticks. Even though our old house hasn't flooded they now have no power/water and can't go anywhere as compeltely cut off. I in my complete blindness to the severity of weather on Friday ventured to sainsburys and only just made it back 2 hours later the water on the same roads were waist high. scary stuff. Don't know how it'sthewaloof is, might email her later as her village was also badly effected as was Mistress Miggins.
