What sort of school bag did girls have in the 90's?

Daughter is trying to source some for a school project but I honestly can't remember anything in particular.

Can you remember what you had around that time?

Record bag/messenger bag/canvas satchel is all that I can think for mid to late 90s when I was at secondary. Also remember the need for a 'cool' carrier bag for PE kit!

autumngazer · 15/01/2019 19:57

I had a Shelley's 'record' bag x

Also had a bag with Take That on for my pe it x

1993 canvas bag with obligatory band badges. Blur, Suede, Bluetones etc

NorthEndGal · 15/01/2019 20:01

Gitano floral canvas thingie

RedForShort · 15/01/2019 20:02

Remember those singingismypassion. Think my sister had one, it replaced her pink head bag. (I was a army bag doc Martin girl)

I think it was skaters who started to make wearing a rucksack on both shoulders acceptable. Agree with pp who said it was the height of nerddom before. My DH still thinks two straps is ‘uncool’. I try and tell him it’s ‘ok’ to wear a rucksack properly these days.... he’s clearly still stuck in the 90s.

I envy the youngsters today and their more orthopedically sensible choices!

I had the black caterpillar messenger bag at school and a woven rucksack (from Tammy!) at weekends, teenager in mid late 90s.
Like this one but not £60!!

I definitely had a duffle bag at one point, don’t know if it was Benetton but I remember the rope was very thick.

Before that I had something like a French Tanns bag although it was bought from a local shop so don’t know the make.

The only one I can remember is the army surplus canvas type thing complete with band patches sewn on and band names/yin yang/CND symbol in tippex and black permanent marker. We all had them.

I remember a rucksack that was £8.99 from Argos in 1991 that was black with a bit of pink and green on. You had to wear it on one shoulder. I had a crossbody leather look bag from next, which may well be a record bag. This was worn low down, so it went below the hip. You couldn’t fit much in it so you had to supplement it with a carrier bag, ideally River Island or something designer. I also had a Benetton duffle bag later on which was painful as it had a skinny cord cutting into your shoulder.

I left high school in 1994 and can remember having a Head bag. I'm sure I had others but buggered if I can remember!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/01/2019 21:11

Well I didn't have to have a separate PE bag because my kit fitted in the bottom zippy pocket....so.fucking.cool.

RedForShort · 15/01/2019 22:40

Didn’t the head bags have a zippy off bit (on one end) that could be used as a separate bag. Triangular in shape with a hand strap?

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2019 16:55

@YodaEars1 I still think people will comment if I use two straps!

SuziQ10 · 19/01/2019 17:36

Late 90s but I had a Groovy Chick bag

SuziQ10 · 19/01/2019 17:37

Oh and of course an inflatable rucksack. Mine was lurid green / clear

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 19/01/2019 17:41

I had the army and navy surplus bag and loved it

FaithInfinity · 19/01/2019 17:47

@Gogogadgetgin as soon as I saw those images I could smell the body shop soaps and lip balms! Grin

I had a Head bag when I started senior school in the early 90s. Unfortunately I had the piss ripped out of me because my parents decided to get me the huge one instead of the normal size (why?! I think it could actually take a tennis racquet!). Then I had a tribal tapestry bag from Dotty P’s and then finally a black messenger bag from Dolcis. Takes me back!

babysharkah · 19/01/2019 17:49

Benetton! Mine was green with white rings

BayandBlonde · 19/01/2019 17:55

Sports bags like @secretmetoo posted.

This was 1990, then it became rucksacks. Handbags and totes were for grannies Grin

BayandBlonde · 19/01/2019 17:58

I had one of these

A light pink and white Head sports bag, and a grey rucksack that was one strap across the body. Ahead of its time! I still have that one, I left school in 1995. Blush

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/01/2019 19:18

We had 'record bags' (think they were called that) that were like satchel/shoulder bags with a big front flap. The boys had rucksacks but wore them with one strap across the body. Eventually someone 'invented' single strap crossover rucksacks!

We also used to wear several pairs of slouch socks so they would go halfway up to your knees, but from talking to other people I think this may have only been our school!

Ridingthegravytrain · 19/01/2019 19:40

Record bags. Stussy was popular
