What sort of school bag did girls have in the 90's?

Daughter is trying to source some for a school project but I honestly can't remember anything in particular.

Can you remember what you had around that time?

Oh wow! You guys are amazing, some of these look so familiar. When I googled, everything that came up looked no different to today! Had some vague notion of some people trying to make a statement with carrier bags though.

She says she needed to know what 16 year olds would had used in the mid 90's.
Thanks for all the help, she has lots to go on now.

Shelley's bag if you went to school early-mid nineties in London

Ooh, I’m sure I had a drawstring Jane Norman or Gap bag for my PE kit!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/01/2019 17:32

We all had Umbro rucksacks in my school!

popehilarious · 15/01/2019 17:33

Black canvas floppy backpack with buckles.
Blue pvc record bag type thing with fake Adidas stripes, and purple big record bag, both from topshop

Toddlerteaplease · 15/01/2019 17:34

Loved my inflatable back pack. But not good for school. And yes to the vintage river island carrier bags. Felt like the business with one of those!

GoofyIsACow · 15/01/2019 17:35

A bit like this but covered in tipex graffiti... 🙈

Pauls boutique was coveted in my class in the 90s

ShadyLady53 · 15/01/2019 17:37

Omg I had that exact Shelley’s bag (in the North) and Shelley’s school shoes one year. And the black and white version of the red Kookai Bag! Memory Lane!

MotorcycleMayhem · 15/01/2019 17:40

Hiking rucksack in the early secondary years, then in my goth years through to college, a dyed purple canvas gas mask bag from the aemy surplus store, covered in loving graffiti, tippex, band badges etc.

Mudmonster · 15/01/2019 17:41

I had a black leather look messenger bag covered in tipex graffiti in year 10/11.
I had a one shoulder Rucksack that velcroed across my front when I was younger, like this. I had a blow up bubble one for a while but it didn’t hold very much.

gemmaxyz I think I got my tapestry bag from Dolcis - it would have been in 1889 or 1990.

ScreamingValenta · 15/01/2019 17:43

*1989 not 1889.

CosmicComet · 15/01/2019 17:45

I remember the Head bags. It was cool to carry the zip off end only and cram everything into it.

PassTheGinPlease · 15/01/2019 17:52

Early nineties I had a jelly bag
Later on I had a check blue and white record bag which I tippexed all over.
Late nineties I would buy army surplus canvas knapsacks and sew old band badges on (and draw on with a marker)

Kenworthington · 15/01/2019 17:57

That picture of thewoven basket bag is IDENTICAL to the one I had. I wish I still had it. It was lovely. They’re really expensive now Sad
Did everyone who had the basket and maybe also the army surplus bag go to private schools????

LonelyandTiredandLow · 15/01/2019 18:00

Yes coughing my sk8ter rucksack (A'levels 1999/2000) was a black cord No Fear one.. still in use for camping!

KeithLeMonde · 15/01/2019 18:01

Kenworthington, state comp here HOWEVER it was in London and we had a big influx of private school students into our sixth form, which is when I remember the bag trend starting, so maybe they imported it.

Lower school was record bags, Head bags and army rucksacks as per PP

mytieisascarf · 15/01/2019 18:04

Yip. If you were into grunge/metal it would have been an army surplus bag covered with badges, typex, and menshies.

If you were into dance music it would have been a record bag from Shelleys or Dolcis.

If you were a hippy it would have been fabric tie die with little mirrors on it.

But you NEVER put your lever arch folder IN your bag. Your folder would be from Athena and you would be clutching it in front of you.

LadyFlumpalot · 15/01/2019 18:06

I had this one:

(Found an awesome website with archived Argos catalogues from the 80's and 90's)

wombatsears · 15/01/2019 18:39

The mini backpack - especially by Jasper Conran.

Crustaceans · 15/01/2019 19:11

At secondary school we all had messenger style bags, which we called ‘postie bags’.

Uneasypeasy · 15/01/2019 19:12

Lower school (90-93) canvas back packs, usually floral or stripes (like the photo); Upper school, 94-95 record bags - mine was green tartan! Sixth form (96-97) - I remember having a black leather version of the canvas rucksack in the photo. I loved the 90s!
