What sort of school bag did girls have in the 90's?

Daughter is trying to source some for a school project but I honestly can't remember anything in particular.

Can you remember what you had around that time?

Benetton and Sisley drawstring bags in a variety of colours. Then we had Morgan de Toi tote bags from House of Fraser.

I also remember having some sort of rucksack in the later years of secondary school, but it could only be worn over one shoulder. Wearing it on both shoulders was social death. I remember wishing I COULD wear it on both shoulders, because all the books were so heavy and I knew it would be more comfortable that way.

Thank fuck I’m now an adult and can wear any bag any way I want Grin

mamansnet · 15/01/2019 19:17

OMG record bags!!!!!

WellTidy · 15/01/2019 19:22

Benetton drawstring duffel bag in dark green. Prior to that, I had the Head bag linked to above in grey and mint. Loved both.

GerryblewuptheER · 15/01/2019 19:23

I saved up in bus fair change and bought a yellow green and red striped fabric rucksack WinkGrin

RedForShort · 15/01/2019 19:23

Canvas army surplus bag (covered with band names)

Head bags, yes these were certainly one of the ones to have.

I had forgotten the stripey canvas rucksack. But yes they were very popular and most certainly just one shoulder.

Kickers messenger bags were all the rage in the late 90s with us. Kickers shoes were the bees knees too. And Kappa jackets. Also those stretchy black chokers, and I have a vague recollection of sports trousers (also Kappa?) with poppers up the outsides...Were they really a thing?

Good times. so glad they are past

Head bags here too.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 15/01/2019 19:32

1996 i had a record bag, and then you took your p.e kit in a 'cool' carrier bag, it would be social suicide to carry it in an ASDA bag.

RedForShort · 15/01/2019 19:34

Oh yes. You could get drawstring carrier bags couldn't you. They were cool and acceptable for PE

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/01/2019 19:36

I had this. I wore it properly and got picked on.

Similar to this. But no black and a bit more yellow

Early 90s here, either a Head bag, or one of the army surplus in the pic above. But it had to be covered in band names. My mate had Levellers in black sharpie across the front of his. It looked ace.

Glad to see the ethnic / tribal rucksack crew out in force

I had a canvas bag too. In fact I was going through some old stuff yesterday and found it Grin

For me the stripey tribal rucksack was 92ish. Then mid 90s I remember having a very small and impractical satin rucksack. Probably less for school and more for going out. I can’t find a pic, but there was a phase of all things satin, I think inspired by this sort of thing.

Then mid-late 90s it was Jansport or Eastpak so you could pretend you were a skater / going out with a skater

GoGoGadgetGin · 15/01/2019 19:49

Also the embroidery/tapestry rucksack- gym kit in body shop cotton 'extinct is forever' bag like this.. before AR sold it :(

melissasummerfield · 15/01/2019 19:51

Senior school 94-99 and we had record bags, big flatish square bags that we wore across the body. I loved being a 90s teenager Grin

ChristinaMarlowe · 15/01/2019 19:51

Little off topic but the Head name and logo - is that what I think it is?! How did our parents not go up the wall?! I mean what else is it (with that name!) - a salt shaker?! 🙈 Seriously never realized...

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 15/01/2019 19:52

Army surplus, dyed purple, covered in band logos and patches.

RedForShort · 15/01/2019 19:52

There's something about body shop bags that's slightly stirring in my memory. Did they sell cotton bags that were considered acceptable?

GoGoGadgetGin · 15/01/2019 19:55

They did red but couldn't find a photo!

NC4Now · 15/01/2019 19:55

Army surplus, bands and tipped here too.

Tapestry backpacks were popular at one time too.

Head bags were for the sporty, popular types. I was more of a Doc Martens kid.

BobbinThreadbare Are you me? I had the exact same bag! My older brother refused to be seen with me because I wore it with both straps.
I mean I had scoliosis so was not recommended to wear a bag with one strap but was forever uncool after that...
