What sort of school bag did girls have in the 90's?

Daughter is trying to source some for a school project but I honestly can't remember anything in particular.

Can you remember what you had around that time?

I had loads! Morgan and Kookai shopper bags and rucksacks. DKNY, Calvin Klein shoppers and rucksacks. A lot of people had Adidas, Nike etc. Puffer material backpacks were popular at one point too.

cleanhousewastedlife · 15/01/2019 16:41

Mine was black, big, and covered in tippex graffiti. Rucksacks were sartorial suicide. Had to be one shoulder only (prob why I get so much neck pain now. I envy today's kids with their rucksacks!). We had loads more to carry. Piles of heavy books. Worksheets were not a thing then. We had pencil tins. I had a proper ink pen and it often leaked. We had paper jotters or rough books, and we all had to have paper diaries as we didn't have phones. I sometimes had a Walkman. Ah, I'm ancient!

CreakyBlinder · 15/01/2019 16:42

I had a khaki canvas bag from the Army Surplus shop with Radiohead and Nirvana badges sewn onto it.

Jarviscockup · 15/01/2019 16:45

United Colours of Benetton duffle bag. Head sports bags.

EduCated · 15/01/2019 16:45

Primary school in the late 90s I had a neon orange sports rucksack, which went beautifully with my lime green trainers Grin

Possibly Reebok. It was from Argos, that I do remember!

ShadyLady53 · 15/01/2019 16:47

That’s brought up a good point - what part of the 90s and what age group?

I was going by being a young teenager at a private school in the late 90s. Lots of Dr parents who insisted on rucksacks to distribute the weight of our enormous bags evenly across our shoulders. They were bloody heavy. I remember bringing a rucksack on wheels back from a holiday to the US and being referred to as “trolley dolly” from then on Blush.

secretmetoo · 15/01/2019 16:47

I had a mint green Head bag which had a zip off trainer bit.

Something like these.

I veered from backpacks (jade) to head bag and then army and navy surplus as outlined before.

Gotstuckwiththisname · 15/01/2019 16:50

I had a baby blue Jansport one. I loved it and replaced it with the same one when it broke. It was very preppy.

DippyAvocado · 15/01/2019 16:50

Some sort of fabric backpack was the most common at my school, or a canvas satchel in a sludgey colour. My bag was blue tartan! A lot had embroidery. Most were adorned with badges of various bands, etc and a ban the bomb or ying yang symbol.

It was more or less compulsory to carry your PE kit in one of the River Island carrier bags with the vintage-style print on it Grin.

I remember these inflatable back packs being rather popular

I had an RAF blue army surplus knapsack which was covered in graffiti, tippex and badges by the time it finally died (early 90s). I also remember having a big woven basket bag with two long leather straps for a while, and when I was in 6th form (mid-90s) I had a large, black, pleather messenger style bag from Next.

Gotstuckwiththisname · 15/01/2019 16:51

cleanhouse ahhh rough books!!! I forgot about them! Yes to the Walkman too!

ScreamingValenta · 15/01/2019 16:51

Very early 90s - it was fashionable at my school to carry a small doctor-style handbag (often tapestry) for your purse etc. and carry everything else in a carrier bag from a fashionable store (Top Shop, River Island or a Sherratt and Hughes bag with the opening lines of a classic novel if you fancied yourself as an intellectual).

DippyAvocado · 15/01/2019 16:51

Should add, my recollections are from the early to mid-90s.

kiiwii · 15/01/2019 16:52

Bubble backpacks! Like see through material? Can't really explain 😂

planespotting · 15/01/2019 16:53

Denim one for my sister, fluorescent green for me
Also a posh one that converted to shoulder bag when I was older

ScreamingValenta · 15/01/2019 16:53

I had a link Head tennis/gym bag for a while and then one of those reusable cotton shoulder bags. I also had a khaki shoulder bag from the army surplus store.

purplegoat · 15/01/2019 16:56

I had a Naf Naf ruck sack in the early 90s then graduated to a black record bag in the mid-late 90s (I can't remember what was on it)
Loads of people at secondary school had black Ted Baker or Kookai record bags. (To go with their Kickers)

DatsunCogs · 15/01/2019 16:58

Yes Creaky ! An army surplus backpack with badges/drawing. I had the CND symbol (no idea what it meant really) and the Yin/Yang symbol. I would say early 90s?

gemmaxyz · 15/01/2019 16:58

Head bags were the thing in my area too. (You would refer to it as a Head bag.) The holdalls especially, like the ones secretmetoo posted (never saw most of those colours) but a Head rucksack was fine as well.

NigelGresley · 15/01/2019 16:58

Head bags like secretmetoo said, but at some point I seem to remember they became really uncool Confused

I also had a tall Benetton drawstring bag.

Later I remember record bags were popular.

3out · 15/01/2019 16:59

Head hold-all. Bags were rectangular so that you could get all your books and folders in, and then balance your casserole dish of H.E spag bol on top without spilling it (hopefully)
