OP posts:
weasleymum · 11/07/2007 23:30

Gosh, big changes for Franca - but there're lots of good things to think about there too...

Thank you thank you thank you all for the book suggestions! I have made a list! And I already have Ginzburg "lessico famigliare" to start!

Don't have much reading time so this may be very slow... but am looking forward to this so much!

mediterRONeo · 12/07/2007 09:25

I always thought that you needed lots of contacts to get a uni job in Italy.Franca you always said that you wanted to live in Italy no? Would it be Milan? Change is stressfull but life enhancing....

francagoestohollywood · 12/07/2007 11:12

weasleymum: I hope you'll enjoy Lessico familiare as much as we (well me and med ) do . If you have any question feel free to ask
Everything will happen after Christmas. He has contacts in 2 different Universities in Milan and in one in another city, which is where he has a bursary. We are probably going to live in Milan. Sadly, I don't think he has a barone do back him up. But what really scares me is that, unless this new government starts giving money to research and works to re-establish some ethics in the mondo universitario, there aren't many fondi in the Italian university. aaaargh. dh says that we can survive for 2 years and if nothing really happens we can go back to England. Obviously I stress that he won't be able to get a job here anymore.
I suppose I'd feel better if I had the certainty that at least I could find a job. But again, the Italian job market sucks, in general.
Anyway
FRANCA OTTIMISTA:

  • we'll be close to friends and family. Our life won't just be our little microcosmo familiare, which is what is now taking its toll.
  • I might get a chance to find a job or re-train
  • I'll be able to navigate my anxieties about children growing up better, because I will have at least the illusion of "knowing" culture, habits, etc
  • He'll find a job, because after all they'd be scemi to let him go
  • if it doesn't happen we'll come back here, and the children will be cosmopolitan FRANCA PESSIMISTA:
  • I won't find a job -he won't find a job
  • children are going to hate he change
  • Italy is a mess. Berlusconi becomes a dictator. Desertification,. Heeeeeeelp!!!!!
mediterRONeo · 12/07/2007 18:26

lol at berlusconi becoming a dictator!!
The question we all want to ask is whether you will be able to mumsnet from milan.

francagoestohollywood · 12/07/2007 18:48

. one of the reasons of our move is to send me to rehab to cure this MN addiction...
Of course I'll be able to MN from Milan!!!
how are you Med? have you got someone to keep you a bit of company while dh is away (apart from your lovely ds. how's the potty training going?) and what are you reading? I'm finishing jphn fante, I want to buy the new woody allen book.

mediterRONeo · 12/07/2007 19:26

Well, dh is thinking of turning down the job as the money is not great...and too stressfull.
Night potty training is sorted, no more nappies day or night, hahaha.
Reading a bio of Colette which I love.
Went into a big anxious attack at the idea i was going to be alone for 6 weeks, now just depressed.

I find him so ridiculous! But scary too!

Rosa · 12/07/2007 20:47

Oh madonna I have missed a bit here. Med we are with you 100% in spirit it will be a long 6 weeks but we will be here to back you up when things get too much.
WOW Franca I am sure that you will be able to cope with whatever the outcome and as for Belusca is Brown much better here ? ( No do not want a political discussion !!!)
Still unsure on a Harry P name yet just been too busy to think and not spending as much time as I want on MN . I hear summer might be back on Saturday

Ellbell · 12/07/2007 21:46

Franca...

(Rosa, I think the chances of Brown taking time off from running the country to have a face-lift are slim, at least... )

francagoestohollywood · 12/07/2007 21:59

I'm now very curious as to what is Med's dh job, but I know she won't tell ...

I am, I really am trying to think about a positive outcome, and I'm so happy to go back... but optimism is not my second name and I'm prone to nostalgia anyway... today I was walking back home with ds and thinking "oh I'm going to miss this street so much..."
I'm concentrating on lots of particolari which are making me anxious like: "how will the children manage to keep their English?" etc etc etc.
Giuro solennemente di non abbandonare MN, anche perche' sono molto affezionata alla mia gang di italo-inglesi!

Ellbell, it'd be great if you came to italy for a sabbatical! we could go to Trieste together sulle orme dei nostri scrittori preferiti...

francagoestohollywood · 12/07/2007 22:03

Ellbell, what's this thing about apostrofi btw?
vado a vedermi le repliche di sex and the city...
Rosa is the forecast good for sautday then? I want to go to blackpool sand...

Ellbell · 12/07/2007 23:21

I am a pedant, franca

francagoestohollywood · 13/07/2007 08:16

. I used to be one, before losing the grip on my mother tongue...

mediterRONeo · 13/07/2007 09:45

Lol a post-lift Gordon Brown wearing a white bandana.
My dp is not a neurosurgeon. Does that help?
Do some therapy Franca I think it will help you work out where this constant nostalgia come from. I suffer from it as well, constanly longing for time past.

mediterRONeo · 13/07/2007 10:49

a post-face lift

Rosa · 13/07/2007 14:04

The forecast said that sat should be better it is HOWLING a gale round here rain etc .
I reckon Meds dh is David Beckhams assistant and he is going to America to get them settled in

francagoestohollywood · 13/07/2007 14:51

LOL!!!!!!
The weather is deteriorating here as well, and we have the school fete here today!
Med, yes, I def want to do some therapy, I'm actually seeing the gp next week to work out whether I can do some councelling ;-)

francagoestohollywood · 13/07/2007 14:52

I meant

Rosa · 13/07/2007 15:07

Franca it is very bad here and it will be coming your way strong winds ( and we are in a valley).Hope they can put the fete inside!
I hate change as well and have to battle with things changing in dd's routine. I was a great planner in work and relaxed at home but that is changing and I hate not being able to now just go with the flow as they say ! I am trying though !

mediterRONeo · 13/07/2007 15:08

Maybe, just maybe my dh is David Beckam. Wouldn't mind his body with dh's brain. sighhhhh. His money too. And one of his houses. But I am sure I would have to redecorate it.

Rosa · 13/07/2007 15:17

Ok so he is not a footballer or assistant are we going to get any clues at all so we can carry on guessing ??
Secret agent ..mmm but you would not know he is going to America then .
Some kind of engineer.
If he is goin to the Us for 8 weeks he must get some kind of special visa especially if he is working... Now I am getting curious !

Ellbell · 13/07/2007 16:04

Is he a famous movie star?

(I am liking the post-face-lift Gordon Brown idea... what would he look like senza jowls???)

francagoestohollywood · 13/07/2007 16:17

Yes, the fete is going to be held in the community hall! shame, and it's getting windier!!
I was going to say secret agent as well!
Lol at redecorating Beckham's pad. I'd do the same. I'm annoyed at those rich people who aren't spending their money properly
Rosa, I used to hate chamge in the children's routine when they were babies. Mostly because I needed sleep! But I had to do it lots of time, as we've always travelled quyite a lot, for instance. But it's fine. It's amazing how flexible they are really, sometimes they just surprise you !

mediterRONeo · 14/07/2007 08:28

Windy here too!
