What decorative objects annoy you? Let's have a MN rant thread (for a change)

This week I am mostly hating decorative picture frames for tiny photos. Especially ones with teddybears on but that's not the point. Whether they're 6" across or marginally bigger than the photo itself, wallet-sized photos belong in wallets.

OP posts:

LMAO Buckets!

moondog · 19/03/2007 18:54

I love it that smoking on the bog was considered normal behaviour.

twelveyeargap · 19/03/2007 20:12

It's just that maybe in a young person's house they just might be "ironic". In an old person's house they are always "heinous".

That's probably ageist isn't it?

Either way, I can't bear the things!

Anything inspired by Linda barker.

twelveyeargap · 19/03/2007 20:40

I remember my friend spending some shocking amount of money - circa £500 I think, on pewter "Lord of The Rings" mugs for her boyfriend's birthday. I just thought, "Why?"

morningpaper · 19/03/2007 20:45

My grandmother left me two garden gnomes when she Passed On.

So we call them George and Allan after her two husbands.

morningpaper · 19/03/2007 20:46

cappucino SNORT at suffocating children

morningpaper · 19/03/2007 20:49

at those shy-kids

they are HORRIFIC

YIKES

It's like the last scene from the BlairWitch project

Ellaroo · 19/03/2007 20:51

fish tanks, curtain pelmets, ANY professionally-taken photo of LOs (especially when including a sheepskin/'pretend cloud' background/photographer's stuffed toy that the child had no emotional attachment to before it was given to them to cuddle for the picture because it looked 'cute')...sorry, I have quite negative feelings about professionally taken photos...didn't mean to rant!

morningpaper · 19/03/2007 20:53

Ellaroo I know what you mean about professional photos

especially ones with white background

I mean they may as well have framed a cheque for £1500 made out to VENTURE PHOTOGRAPHY LIMITED

NorksBride · 19/03/2007 20:57

I know I'll have nightmares about shy kids tonight. They were scary enough without Bucketsofdynomite going all Stephen King.

DeviousDaffodil · 19/03/2007 20:59

HAte fake dado rails esp with different wall parer above and below.
Laminate floors.
Gravelled gardens.
Louvre doors.

Ellaroo · 19/03/2007 21:00

Exactly Morning Paper, the whole point of a photo of your LO is surely that they are unique and wonderful to you...all these hideous professionally-taken photos do is put their uniqueness onto a nasty conveyor belt and churn them out all looking much the same. It is contrived and totally awful.

Having said that I love the school photos just because they are so naff and mark the passing of time in a very traditional way that is nice to look back on by the time you're years later. However, I believe these should be kept in a box and never ever be put on a wall, mantle-piece or any other surface where they could be viewed. They are purely for time capsule purposes imho!

tinkerbellhadpiles · 19/03/2007 21:09

Filthymindedvixen - round here PAMPAS grass in your front garden indicates swingers......I set fire to ours when I moved in, the bloody thing wouldn't die and I didn't want the neighbours to think I was up for it (they are dreadfully ugly!)

Those shy kids are really freaky. [shudder]

mrsmalumbas · 19/03/2007 21:17

Oh god I have twigs in a vase too - AND they have little fairy lights on them...I love 'em...

mrsmalumbas · 19/03/2007 21:19

Jesus, I just looked at the shy kids link - how freaky is that?

I might buy one and stand it in the corner of DD's bedroom just to scare the crap out of her.

That's a joke by the way.

DeviousDaffodil · 19/03/2007 21:22

Worse than Chucky!!!

morningpaper · 19/03/2007 21:23

they are AWFUL

I think I am going to have nightmares

They don't have FACES

mrsmalumbas · 19/03/2007 21:26

Do they actually have faces? I am just imagining this scary blank face...

mrsmalumbas · 19/03/2007 21:27

x-post morningpaper

DeviousDaffodil · 19/03/2007 21:28

I have visions of reaching out and slowly turning them around, and ther will be scream faces or worse(((((((((((runs off to hide behind the sofa!!)))))))))))

myturn · 19/03/2007 21:29

Outside garbage bins covered in that bright green 'camouflage' stuff - makes them stick out like a sore thumb. Imagine being able to make a rubbish bin 'tacky'...

Ornaments. Of any kind.

Plastic flowers.

Door mats with slogans on them.

Lace curtains

Hooks for displaying cups/kitchen utensils/keys etc etc on your wall. Why? They are not decorative objects. Put them in a cupboard.

Garden poster scenes. Again, why?

Garden solar lights for paths which are less than 2 metres long.

Mirage · 19/03/2007 22:22

If you watch that 'Beat the Bailiff' or whatever it is called,on datime tv,you will notice that the people featured seem to have a lot of these quality items in their homes.

Lovecat · 19/03/2007 22:37

OMG, those shy kids - do they actually have faces? They certainly don't seem to have necks...

And that shoe is truly an abomination - how big is it, ffs??

Must confess I had a load of those pewter dragons in my youth - finally gave them all away last year and ooh, I feel strangely cleansed!

But my elder brother still has several orc armies strewn across his surfaces....

Personal hatreds: Dolls, cannot bear them, anything 'joke' like that godawful bigmouth billy bass thing, those featureless statues usually of a couple hugging/snogging/shagging, net curtains, swagged pelmets, austrian blinds (or whores-drawers as my mother calls them) and italian dining furniture (you know, the super-shiny stuff that looks like it's been dipped in a bucket of toffee), to name but a few... don't mind dado rails, but I hate borders just plonked randomly halfway up a wall (esp when the wallpaper's the same colour beneath - why??)
