What decorative objects annoy you? Let's have a MN rant thread (for a change)

This week I am mostly hating decorative picture frames for tiny photos. Especially ones with teddybears on but that's not the point. Whether they're 6" across or marginally bigger than the photo itself, wallet-sized photos belong in wallets.

Anything that doesn't serve a function doesn't get a chance in my home. It has to be useful to able to stay and that goes for the humans that live here. Kids and cats I can forgive for having no practical reason to be here, because they are cute.

"Those freaky ornament 'life like' baby dolls you see in the sunday supplements. They cost a fortune - who the heck buys them?"
Northerner - my mum's ex-neighbour!!! Her house was FULL of them - they were quite scary.........

VioletBaudelaire · 18/03/2007 17:39

not read whole thread, but can't stand those fussy psuedo-oriental pottery jardineres that are about six feet tall - my friend has one in her dining room, and everyone is terrified of knocking it over.

Bucketsofdynomite · 18/03/2007 19:07

Taking the decorative objects out of the house and into the car... those sindow hangy things that say 'Daddy's little princess' or 'Little Miss Naughty' and all the accompanying 'cute' car clutter that single girls living at home (well, grown women given today's houseprices) have. If they're not virgins it just goes to show that men will shag anything. And you just KNOW their bedrooms are the same.

Peeing boys - either as ornaments or water features. Especially when they're water features.

megandsoph · 18/03/2007 19:18

The 3 flying ducks yuckkkk

RustyBear · 18/03/2007 19:20

I remember staying at a B&B when I was 5, where the landlady had a massive collection of those little white china ornaments with towns' coats of arms on. She had them not only on every horizontal surface in her house, but also glued on all the way up the bannisters! My mum, with 4 of us under 11 was in mortal dread that we'd break something.

It must have lodged in my subconscious because I actually started a collection of these myself when I was about 12, but only ones with cats on - I only got as far as Grantham, Stamford, Watford and Eton though - and I never put them on the bannisters!

Themis · 18/03/2007 19:25

venetian wall masks

Just give me the creeps ...

bakedpotato · 18/03/2007 19:26

green apples in big glass vases

bakedpotato · 18/03/2007 19:27

and people putting their own wedding pics out.. yeah, we know what you look like

filthymindedvixen · 18/03/2007 19:31

I was once told that those butterfly ornmanets on exterior walls were a 'sign' of surburban swingers...must admit, every time I see one on a house I wonder...especially if they have pampass grass too
They are a bit 'narsty' eh?

cori · 18/03/2007 19:32

anything has to go in a glass cabinet to be 'displayed'.

Bucketsofdynomite · 18/03/2007 19:35

Ooh FMV I didn't know that, I shall keep my eyes peeled, I love making up lives for people I don't know! Whenever I see a smartlooking outhouse in someone's garden I automatically assume it's a 'Group Room' after watching that Louis Theroux programme about swingers.

agree cori - teaspoons especially! Whyyyyyy?

filthymindedvixen · 18/03/2007 19:45

buckets - i obviously have no idea whether it's true or not! (I am a little about hottubs in suburban garden too for similar reasons )

Mirage · 18/03/2007 19:52

pointless things.I don't like ornaments at all,especially porcelain dolls,plates,figurines & other clutter.Agree with cori,'display' cabinets & their contents,especially Swarvorski (sp)? crystal crap.

Aloveheart · 18/03/2007 19:53

China dolls i hate them they are evil and creepy. they come alive at night i swear. lol. no i just don't like them.

crispyduck · 18/03/2007 19:55

tacky neon pictures you can by which I might add cost a f*ing fortune to run...

malaleche · 18/03/2007 19:57

anything which does not have a purpose i.e. i'll allow an african mask in my house but not a china ornament...

filthymindedvixen · 18/03/2007 19:57

Anything from Collectables

wanderingstar · 18/03/2007 19:58

collections of anything - ceramic cottages, dolls, spoons etc.

princesscc · 18/03/2007 20:01

I hate anything that needs dusting with more than a flick of a duster and anything glass that shows up the dust when the light shines on it.

nulnulcat · 18/03/2007 20:41

hate ornaments and clutter but big hates are those evil china dolls

collections of anything! not a fan of antiques (why do i want someone elses old junk dont care how expensive it is!) car boot sales should be banned - dont give people excuses to offload there junk just bin it!!

my mum is a fan of clutter and crap loads of ornaments which i used to have to dust as a child (hmm seeing where my aversion springs from!) my nan was even worse!

and my biggest hate ever is garden gnomes!! totally pointless - me and some friends once rented a house on a road that was overrun with the damn things one night we went and painted them all black and chopped the heads of a few of them!
