I want to give Jo Malone a good slapping now that I have her "life in the day of" article in Sunday Times magazine 14 July. Especially for the last paragraph!

WideWebWitch · 20/07/2002 18:59

CAM, YES, YES, YES! I so agree, I read that too and thought why did you bother having children?!! (I keep saying I won't buy S Times any more but...)

I also nominate Margaret Cook who is the agony columnist for She (I think?) and advised a woman who was devastated because her DH had walked out 4 days after their baby was born something along the lines of: "bless him, he probably wants looking after a bit more. Maybe you need to give him as much attention as the new baby? Most men do need to feel mothered most of their lives. Try to be patient and loving to him" BIG SLAP, this is not the 50s woman!

binker · 20/07/2002 19:51

Cam and wickedwaterwitch - what did Jo Malone say ?

WWW,is that the Margaret Cook who was married to Robin Cook who walked out on her for a younger model???

(Or is it another one, in which case I take that bit back!)

MABS · 20/07/2002 21:07

Put me in the queue to slap Jo Malone, actually isn't she a hairdresser/beauty guru ? I'd like to shave her head and and eyebrows...

WideWebWitch · 20/07/2002 23:00

JanH, yes, it is the same Margaret Cook. Hmmm, she can't have been doing enough nurturing of the pig-ugly Robin Cook then...MABS, at shaving Jo Malones' eyebrows!

Taking the quotes from Jo and Margaret at face value, you leave your baby to cry all night, while lavishing tlc on your husband....

SueDonim · 21/07/2002 09:37

I haven't seen Margaret Cook's column but I've read her autobiog and I have say, her advice quoted here sounds very faecetious(sp?!! She says in the book that Robin was emotionally immature and went walkabouts because she was not prepared to mother him anymore. Friends of ours are long time friends of the Cooks and quite frankly, he sounds as though he was a prt at 18 and still a prt at 50-something. She, OTOH, is lovely, they say.

I'd like to slap the staff at the garage where I bought a new (new to us) car last week. We picked it up on Thursday evening, they made us sign all the paperwork then told us that they hadn't had time to MOT it. Yesterday we delivered a list of 15 faults to them (ripped wiper blades, flashing air bag light, bent key, no aerial etc etc) most of which had been pointed out before we left on Thursday. Today I went shopping and came back fully laden with all 3 kids and 6 bags of food only to limp to a halt with a broken clutch about 2 miles from home. Not impressed! Neither was the Service Manager when he had to do without his car for the night so that I had something to drive home in. He should have done his job properly in the first place.

Does anyone know if I am within my rights to keep hold of his car until I am satisfied that everything on the list has been sorted out? I don't want mine back until it is perfect.

Rant over!!! (At least they have to fix the clutch being so soon and can't blame us for wear and tear like they would 3 months down the line). Oh and both the men from the AA were 'very, very nice men'.

PamT, I don't know how you were driving the car as it is illegal to drive without an MOT on your car and you shouldn't have been able to get insurance without a valid certificate either. Therefore, I would think the garage would be legally entitled to MOT it so you could get your insurance. I'm definitely thinking they'd rather keep the issue quiet so I would at least bluff to keep the guy's car but, again, I would check that you are insured to drive the car. What a bloody cheek of the garage, keep on them I'm sure they'll rush it through to keep you happy.

PamT · 23/07/2002 10:42

The old MOT doesn't run out until next week, but we were promised when we agreed to buy that it would have 12 months MOT. The fact that there were definitely 3 faults which would have failed an MOT did mean that the car was technically illegal to drive (torn wiper blades, flashing air bag light, tracking out on front wheels). When they ring me to say it is ready for collection today I will ask if 'all' the issues have been sorted and if not I am going to tell them to ring me again when they have and put the phone down without further comment. I might also tell them that Trading Standards and the MOT regulators (I'll have to find out what they are called) would take a very dim view of all this and we will discuss the matter with them and Head Office if we don't get satisfaction. In fact, I will ring TS now to see where I stand and what they/I am obliged to do regarding standard of repairs and them supplying me with an alternative vehicle.

Lucy123 · 23/07/2002 14:52

bad luck Pam T - I hate breaking down (although it's usually my fault).

Anyway I'd like to nominate my (ex) accountant for a good slapping. In Spain you have to submit accounts every quarter, pay and then submit an annual return and then claim the surplus back. Accountant cocked up my final quarter's accounts and I've been nagging since January for answers/suggestions in time for the annual accounts which he was going to do . He's been fobbing me off with "it's not important yet" but today I found out the annual accounts should have been submitted on July 1st! He now says he didn't know I wanted him to do them (like bcks). I am so angry!

Anyway while I'm angry I'd also like to nominate:

local radio DJs who think that their show is an audition for Zoe Ball's old show on radio 1
Zoe Ball
The Gibratarians (for going on about their "British" pride without actually paying full British taxes)
Timeshare touts

there are probably a few more but most have already been mentioned...

tigermoth · 04/08/2002 19:50

Well, more a sharp tap on the wrist really (don't want to be accused of abuse) to my husband for mislaying our holiday money and credit cards. OK a mistake anyone can make, but then he tried to say if was my fault until I pointed out I was in bed when he came in and did his packing at 10.00 last night.

The incident culminated in me cancelling our cards and it delayed our journey to the west country till tomorrow (Monday). Still, he saved us from a very wet drive, I suppose.

jodee · 04/08/2002 22:24

Tigermoth, I hope the holiday money turned up in the end!

I'm not a believer in fate, but I know when annoying situations like that have occurred in our family (i.e. dh (yes, it's always him!) mislaying the car keys or his wallet which makes us a couple of hours late in departing to visit MIL in Wales), we would have driven into (or even possibly been involved in) a nasty accident somewhere on the motorway, which we avoided by leaving later, so even though your dh is deserving of his sharp tap on the wrist, you never know ...

Have a great holiday, hoping for a reappearance of the sun for you.

Carogee, if I may say so, that remark is a terrible slur on these noble apes. What a horrible woman, Batters.

monkey · 06/08/2002 12:46

He does his own packing Tigermoth? He diffinitely doesn't deserve a slap or a tap! I nominate my dh, who never packs anything, or even suggests a selection of things. I do the lot, amd then he moens if he doesn't have a certain t-shirt or whatever.

In fact, I'll nominate myself for a slap for being such a mug.
