DS is sick, what would a good Italian mum cook for him? First time he is properly sick, I need to cook him something, even if he might not eat it...

I'm currently reading Sciascia, todo modo.

redeastend · 22/02/2007 22:10

Very nice, I will want to hear everything about your holiday. Does it get very hot in Tuscany in August? No idea.....Stellina io sono Campana, vivo qui da tanti tanti anni.

franca70 · 22/02/2007 22:13

No idea. I suppose it depends on the summer. I'm not really concerned, I love it when it's really hot!

redeastend · 22/02/2007 22:14

Mi ero dimenticata di Sciascia..di sicuro non lo trovo nella mia biblioteca.I don't know why my local library is full of books by people like Nantas Salvaggio o Alberto Bevilacqua, ma chi li legge?????

franca70 · 22/02/2007 22:17

lol at your local library full of nantas salvalaggio books!!!!!!!!!!!!!

redeastend · 22/02/2007 22:27

crazy isn't it? who the hell reads him???

franca70 · 22/02/2007 22:35

don't hav a clue, I'm still lolling, at bevilacqua being huge in the east end!

Ellbell · 22/02/2007 23:13

Hmmmm... I do occasionally read other things (between canti, you understand )

Am getting into Camilleri. The Sicilian (or pseudo-Sicilian) isn't hard once you get into it.

franca70 · 22/02/2007 23:22

camilleri si very good. Two years ago I had chicken pox, I was really poor, luckily we were in italy staying with the inlaws, I stayed in bed for a week and nursed the itching with something like 6 novels by him!

Ellbell · 22/02/2007 23:27

Oh, poor you. Chicken pox is horrid if you get it when you're an adult.

The last time I read lots and lots of books 'just for fun' was when I was in hospital having dd1. I was in for a long time and read anything and everything that people brought me.

redeastend · 22/02/2007 23:37

I have a Camilleri in Sicilian! I bought it thinking it was in Italian, but no, definetely in Sicilian.

Ellbell · 22/02/2007 23:54

I thought that in the ones I've read the main narrative was in Italian, but the dialogue was in Sicilian. But I've just picked up one I haven't read yet (La pazienza del ragno) and it does look quite Sicilian. But is it really siciliano-siciliano? Or is it more italiano regionale?

Anyway, I enjoyed the ones I've read!

stellinadinatale · 23/02/2007 00:04

i mums! thanks for your adcvice about books! Tuscany is very hot in summer expecially Florence as it is situated in a valley. there are lots of mosquitoes in the city center because of the river arno and all its branches. But the countryside is lovely. My dad lives in Orbetello (Maremma) it is a protected area where you can find lots of animals still livingin the "wilde" (cattivita'). I suggest you to spend a holiday there, the sea is lovely.
changing subject I really would like to know if some of you mums live in North London, nobody?

I know, Firenze gets extremely hot in the summer, but I don't think we'll visit Firenze. The agriturismo we are going to is very close to volterra, bolgheri etc. Orbetello is lush, but I can't even begin to imagine how expensive it would be to rent in august... usually we go to salina (sicily) for the summer holidays, but this time the friends we are going with will have a 6months dd and salina would be a bit extreme with a little one.
Ellbell sorry to hear you had to spend a long time in hospital to have your dd. The chicken pox was indeed horrid, but I had a week of rest... didn't almost see the children for the whole time!

redeastend · 23/02/2007 11:45

A week without children would be heaven....

redeastend · 23/02/2007 11:52

Ds oggi sta a casa di un altro bambino a giocare, li chiamano playdates qui no? Io veramente non sopporto la parola "playdate", mi sembra cosi fredda, businesslike, ...

franca70 · 23/02/2007 16:54

It would, but we are gojng on holiday with the children... the trick (at least it works for us) is always going on holidays with friends and other children, the children play together, and once they are in bed, we can have dinner and adult conversations!

crumpet · 23/02/2007 17:11

OK, since reading this thread and remembering my Tuscan days I've had a song going round and round my head and I can't remember who it is by - think 1960s/70s Bob Dylan type. Can only remember a few lines (these aren't in order!)

Le biciclette abandonate sulla strada e poi, le tue calzette rosse (something about le bionde trecce...)

Dov'e' sei stata cos'hai fatto mai? Una donna, donna dimmi, cosa vuol'dire (di dum di dum)....

Loved the song but not heard it for about 10 years! Mi aiutate?

franca70 · 23/02/2007 17:17

it's la canzone del sole, by lucio battisti, one of my favourite cantanti.
you can find the text here:

crumpet · 23/02/2007 17:23

Che meraviglia - grazie - e' da 24 ore che mi cantavo quelle parole! Ora mi ricordo: "o mare nero mare nero mare ne..." La canzone e' troppo bella
