Only two days to go until the start of the best sporting event in the World! Don't know how I'm going to cope with the trials and tribulations of the England team alongside BB3. Anyone else getting excited? Would love to know how well you think England / Ireland are going to do and who you think is going to win.

Sorry, but I'm a huge footie fan!

There's a world cup for football?

Joe1 · 29/05/2002 09:41

We have the flag up and all sorts. Ds has all his england kit. Sorry but I dont really care much about it, probably because I dont like anything really that is all football. I was glad to hear that sky didnt get the rights for the tv, I think it should be available for all to watch.

elwar · 29/05/2002 09:52

HOORAY! Finally a footie thread. I didn't dare start one myself for fear of yawns & sighs from sport-hating football widows Anyway, DD has her England kit, we have plenty of football-watching breakfast treats in the house and we're just waiting for Friday now (France vs Senegal).
Such a shame about Roy Keane & Ireland, they could've done so well. But as for England, I hear all 23 are back in full training inc. Becks & Dyer (yippee). I'm gutted for Danny Murphy, he'd really earned his place. I think Argentina are overrated & Sweden aren't strong enough, so England will definitely go to the next round, and might even top the group! (maybe a little optomistic...). I hope if eNgland don't do so well that eveyone doesn't just ignore the world cup, there's so much fantastic football to be seen. France will probably keep the cup though. Better stop now, or Mumsnet will transfer me to Sky Sports.com!!!

bundle · 29/05/2002 10:02

I've drawn South Korea in the office sweepstake. ho hum.

jessi · 29/05/2002 10:04

I love it too and agree that France will probably do really well. Don't think England will do fantastically... sorry!

Marina · 29/05/2002 10:27

Not very patriotic I know, but I'd like to see France win again, I just think Zinedine Zidane is a great player and a fantastic role model at home. I think England have their work cut out getting past Sweden, to be honest.
And don't even mention Ireland. My Dublin-born mother is beside herself with rage and grief...

Tinker · 29/05/2002 10:43

Hooray! A footie thread. Love it. Can't see England topping the group, to be honest. Would really hate to see Argentina win though - Hand of God thing stills leaves a bad taste.

I've got France in office sweep (plus about 3 other no-hopers) Er, I organised the sweep. Any correlation???

Jaybee · 29/05/2002 10:44

Don't loath it but I do tend to lose half my family to football!! DH and DS do go on and on and on and on about it and usually summertime is when I get any jobs done around the house (between seasons) - not this year!!!! At least we didn't go to Japan!! 1998 holiday was in France and dh is already planning to go to Portugal in 2004!! I often feel that our life revolves around football!!
I also work in an office of mostly men so I can't escape it here either - at least all the football talk at home gives me a good base for my Fantasy World Cup team!!

SueDonim · 29/05/2002 11:28

Ooh, can't resist a bit of name dropping here. My son's girlfriend is cousin to Zinedine Zidane. She often gets asked if she is related to him, as Zidane is also her surname, and people are quite surprised when she says 'Yes'!!

elwar · 29/05/2002 12:00

Is Gerard Houllier really ZZ's godfather then?

Jaybee · 29/05/2002 12:03

Has anyone else got to do a breakfast bar-b-q? Dh has invited his mates round for one of the 7:30am kick off games!!

Zoe · 29/05/2002 12:37

I'm looking forward to it but I am finding that I feel more detached from it because it is so far away, which I realise is the point of a WORLD cup, it's just going to be wierd watching football at 7.30am. My dh doesn't like football, at least he purports not to, but ten years with me has given him more than a passing interest and he is now a completely partisan Liverpool fan. It's role reversal in our house!

Tillysmummy · 29/05/2002 12:37

loathe it

Zoe, my dh is an avid liverpool fan too, so ds is going the same way.

Tinker · 29/05/2002 13:15

SueDonim - that's fantastic! I'm a sucker for being star struck!

Another Liverpool fan here. Sobernow, I know this will cause a row now but, I don't think I could fancy a bloke if he wasn't into football - seems incomplete, somehow!!!!

Viv · 29/05/2002 13:24

Can't wait, have got the flags ready for Sunday morning, dd is delighted as she has a birthday party to go to after the match which is fancy dress so she is going in her England strip.
Also as a Saints fan, its great to have Wayne Bridge in the Squad.
Just trying to persuade my boss to let us have a radio in the office or I may be taking a fair amount of time off of the next few weeks.

sml · 29/05/2002 13:36

Tinker, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enid · 29/05/2002 13:43

I like football if the players are good looking, so obviously I will be supporting Sweden because of Freddie Lundiberg (sp??)

My best friend's husband is in Japan covering England for the Mail - she is praying they get knocked out early so she can have him home in 3 weeks instead of 6!

21stcenturygirl · 29/05/2002 14:06

Love it!! I worked with some football widows a few years ago and arranged a "Predict the Score" competition. They all entered for a laugh (eg. "Are Brazil any good?" and rushed home at night to watch the games. Surprise, surprise, one of them won the competition!

Also, I was in Rome the other week and got talking to a Frenchman, Swede and Italian (must be a joke there!!) and they all reckoned that England had a good chance. It's nice to know that we are respected in other nations.

leander · 29/05/2002 14:18

Amymum dont be sorry i also love footie. My team is LIVERPOOL (watch out next season). My dh is made up but we always row about who can have a drink watching the game and who's driving.I think England will struggle unless the injury situation improves and Ireland will do better than everyone expects cause they'll be fired up to prove Roy Keane wrong and that they are more than a one man team. Dh thinks Argentina or Spain will win.

jodee · 29/05/2002 14:36

A ray of hope - heard that Freddie Ljungberg may miss the game against England, he has pulled out of training due to some minor injury. Fingers crossed it lasts til 3 June or we're up a gum tree!

elwar · 29/05/2002 14:39

This is fantastic - so many fellow Reds here and not a glory-hunter in sight! 21stcenturygirl- you're right about the England team being respected, but just look at the names: Owen, Fowler, Beckham, Campbell, Ferdinand, Scholes - they'd get in almost any team in the world.

leander - too right, next season is the one. 00/01 was just a warm-up, and last season we generously let the cockneys have a go but there will be NO MERCY from now on...

Joe1 · 29/05/2002 14:46

I am going to have to show dh this with all this Liverpool support he will be impressed, he is dying to get me into a Liverpool shirt.

Enid hormones still raging I see

Although Im not really interested, I think England will have a better chance if they dont rely on one player and play as a team, fingers crossed otherwise dh will not be happy.

Were dh works they are having tv's installed so employees can watch the England games in all offices across the country, so saving on sick days.
