Only two days to go until the start of the best sporting event in the World! Don't know how I'm going to cope with the trials and tribulations of the England team alongside BB3. Anyone else getting excited? Would love to know how well you think England / Ireland are going to do and who you think is going to win.

Sorry, but I'm a huge footie fan!

Thanks Thumper!
When England drop out I'll be supporting Ireland.

Joe1 · 06/06/2002 16:24

Good for you Thumper.

Sister, you sound as optimistic as me about Englands chances. Dh is very disappointed at my whole attitude. I wish they would go balls out and just play as if their life depended on it like some of the other teams, why does it always look that they are holding back and playing a well planned game and frightened to move away from it. I think they are missing Steven Gerrard.

sister · 06/06/2002 16:36

Joe1,
My DH always sounds as though he knows what he is talking about when it comes to football and I was all excited because he rates the new England Manager very highly. When England scored against Sweden I nearly screamed the roof down!
By the second half I couldn't watch any longer, my expections had dropped to rock bottom. Why can't we ever win anything any more, football, Tennis, golf, Olympics,Eurovision song contest.....

Tinker · 06/06/2002 19:18

I'me getting very nervous about tomorrow. The Argentinians hate us (the English) - very good piece in todays Independent.

jessi · 06/06/2002 21:39

Tinker, me too! Did you read in the press today about Beckham saying he'd cheat if he had to? I think it was misinterpreted that he'd happily do a revenge 'Hand of God', but I think he meant that he'd play as dirty as they do...within reason!

Tinker · 06/06/2002 21:46

And St Michael hinted likewise!!

sylvev · 06/06/2002 22:00

Sister, cheer up! I have it on good authority (ds- aged 7) that we will win tomorrow. Watching the footie with him is like having your very own John Motson in the room! Examples of his (continuous) commentry during the France/Uruguay match today include: "...He's nearly 6 foot, mom, and used to play for real madrid...Bartek is ALWAYS coming out of goal....OFFSIDE!!.....Down to 10 men but still playing well...Can I have a biscuit?....If France had played well in their first match, I think they'd be winning now..."
I predict a 1-1 scoreline.

leander · 06/06/2002 22:49

I think its gonna be a tough one but we'll do it tomorrw 2-1 with the lovely Michael (so cute) Owen getting the first goal.
COME ON ENGLAND.
My poor Dh has to go into work at 3am so he can come home to watch the game!!

This was the first round from the Pub Quiz this week - all the answers are linked by a common theme. Something to think about while waiting for 12.30pm!

1 In which film did Sean Connery play a submarine commander?

2 Who is Fatboy Slim's father-in-law?

3 Which football commentator and pundit died last year?

4 Who was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army?

5 Which TV presenter was Sandie Shaw's first husband?

6 What was Tesco heiress Shirley Porter's maiden name?

7 What are Gothic, Doric etc..?

8 Who had a posthumous no. 1 hit with Reet Petite?

9 Who was the last Northern Ireland athlete to win an Olympic Gold?

10 Who was recently re-elected president of the National Rifle Association?

11 Which London area has the postcode SE7?

12 Which celebrity chef is a fan of Glasgow Rangers?

thumper · 07/06/2002 09:45

Sister, been thinking about what you said about us never winning anything, being any good at anything, and came up with these: two women, Ann Daniels and Caroline Hamilton are first female team in the World to cover both North and South Poles, Ellen McArthur coming second at 24 in the Vendee Race, and got to get this one in, the Scottish (and British!) Curling team winning Gold at this year's Winter Olympics. Maybe not mainstream stuff, but not bad. Also, note common thread - all WOMEN! Hope this cheers you up a bit!

Marina · 07/06/2002 09:59

Ooh, Fionn, anything to take my mind off the angst:

  1. Hunt for Red October

  2. Johnny Ball

  3. Patty Hearst?

  4. Columns - or more generally, classical architectural styles

  5. Mary Peters?

  6. Charlton Heston

  7. Charlton (Athletic rule OK)

  8. Gordon Ramsay

I am too lacking in caffeine to make the link at the moment except that it's got to be to do with football...

janh · 07/06/2002 10:34

I know you've got the link but 5 is Jeff Banks (=Gordon Banks) and 6 is Cohen but I can't remember what his first name was/is.

Marina · 07/06/2002 10:44

And Alf Ramsay, Geoff Hurst (Hearst) etc. Doh. But I got you brainboxes started...

leander · 07/06/2002 11:40

Just watching the Spain -Paraguay game , dont you think the Spanish team are sexy!!and thats not the reason i tipped them to win!

ooh they'vr just go a penalty yess

elwar · 07/06/2002 13:30

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

mears · 07/06/2002 13:55

As another Scot can I say I am also supporting England. It is not the team that the Scottish don't support. On the whole it is the bl**dy commentating that goes on in England games that drives us crazy!
Hope England 'keeps the heid' as we say north of the border, and doesn't give anything away in the second half.

Tillysmummy · 07/06/2002 13:58

Does anyone have the score ? Want to know what sort of mood to expect dh in.

AtkinsR · 07/06/2002 13:58

I can't watch.................this is bad for my heart!

mears · 07/06/2002 14:14

5 mins to go - England 1, Argentina 0.

mears · 07/06/2002 14:22

Well done England - but as predicted 1966 mentioned yet a- bl**by gain !!!

mears · 07/06/2002 14:23

elwar · 07/06/2002 14:28

I feel absolutely sick, my head is pounding & my blood pressure is sky high. I bl**dy love football!!!
