Only two days to go until the start of the best sporting event in the World! Don't know how I'm going to cope with the trials and tribulations of the England team alongside BB3. Anyone else getting excited? Would love to know how well you think England / Ireland are going to do and who you think is going to win.

Sorry, but I'm a huge footie fan!

OP posts:
leander · 31/05/2002 15:03

Well done to Senegal, glad to see Bartez doing what he does best!! Loved the goal celebration.

Enid · 31/05/2002 15:16

Sorry honeybunny, but most of the games are on in the morning/lunchtime so you may not escape yet...

Fionn · 31/05/2002 17:03

Who do you think would be a good bet? Anyone studied the odds? I will bet on England and Ireland for patriotic reasons but fancy another flutter. Who are the promising outsiders (apart from England and Ireland..!)?

elwar · 31/05/2002 17:12

Portugal would probably be worth your while. Or further outside, Cameroon will certainly give everyone a run for their money. The bookies are usually convinced it will be between 5 or 6 of the usual suspects (France!{}, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Spain etc), Portugal are probably just outside these in their view, but they are a very good side.

Tinker · 31/05/2002 19:07

They're also extremely good looking

Fionn · 31/05/2002 20:46

That settles it then!
Thanks Elwar, I've asked my brother to put a fiver on them for me. I find betting shops intimidating, one of the last male preserves!

honeybunny · 02/06/2002 21:04

Enid-my secret weapon is ds1, now that he knows how to work the video, won't put up with anything on the box that isn't Thomas the Tank engine!! dh had to make do with R5Live!! and a trip to the garden centre for an excuse to listen. Predictable result for england. Still, the cricket was great!! Roll on the next test!! and come on England! Far more exciting than footie anyday, especially if listening to "Blowers" on TMS R4LW!!

Bozza · 04/06/2002 11:02

Couldn't believe it - 2 phonecalls, a dirty nappy and DS learned how to turn off the TV all in the first half!! PIL rang from supermarket - didn't even know the game was on.

Fionn · 05/06/2002 13:49

At least I only put a fiver on Portugal...

leander · 05/06/2002 14:45

Well done to Ireland, they outplayed the Germans and deserved to win but a draw was a great result.

Tinker · 05/06/2002 14:46

Fantastic edge of the seat game! Brilliant, should have won it.

Marina · 05/06/2002 15:35

I missed the end, the last I heard was that Ireland were 1-0 down. That is a great result for them!

elwar · 06/06/2002 10:42

GAAHH! So sorry Fionn, what can I say? There's just so many crazy results this world cup. The USA looked truly awful in their warm-ups, did not expect that at all...
If it makes you feel any better, the 3 'World Cup predictions' competitions I've entered have all been shot to pieces, thanks to Senegal, Germany, Russia and USA.

Fionn · 06/06/2002 13:11

Elwar, don't worry, I was joking! I don't take betting very seriously. My brother recommended Portugal to me as well. Glad it wasn't France though judging by the latest, down to 10 men...

Enid · 06/06/2002 13:51

My money is on Italy to win.

Currently watching france v uruguay - very entertaining, full of fouls and everyone losing their temper. No goals so far though.

elwar · 06/06/2002 14:04

Enid, did you see the tackle Henry was sent off for? Did it look that bad? (Can't skive to the telly today, got to do some work - boo hoo.)

Enid · 06/06/2002 14:06

Yes, it was, IMinexperiencedO.

This is one of the most entertaining games i've seen so far!

Rhubarb · 06/06/2002 14:08

Dh has taken day off tomorrow, his mum is looking after dd so we're hitting the pubs to hopefully see England knock the pants off Argentina, although the crap way they played last Sunday doesn't give me much room for hope.

I'm really glad Ireland are still in there too, but what has happened to Scotland anyone? Are they not in it? Have they been knocked out without me knowing?

Also, is it just me or has anyone else noticed that whilst the English are happy to cheer on Ireland and Scotland, our celtic neighbours are less than happy to cheer us on. Not very British of them!

Enid · 06/06/2002 14:10

Kind dp has given all his staff the day off tomorrow after 11am so we'll be settling down at home and stuffing dd full of crisps to keep her quiet (should this be on the Bad Mothers Brigade thread )

elwar · 06/06/2002 14:17

Rhubarb - Scotland failed to qualify (despite having the Faroe Islands in their qualifying group )

And only the English cheer on the English. Remember that many of these countries spent years under tyrannical British rule...

Marina · 06/06/2002 14:19

Oh tut, Enid, and to think I was feeling guilty for presenting ds with an educational Playmobil fire engine at about 10.15 on Sunday morning.
I am marooned at work in a building that cannot get a terrestrial TV signal, employers too tight to get cable link, so dependent on transistor and headphones tomorrow.

Rhubarb · 06/06/2002 14:20

Isn't it about time the past was left at the past elwar? After all, holding a grudge is what leads to many wars and is not healthy. I'm sure Scotland would love to be a fully independant country, but can't we all live side by side? I still have to live under the English tyrannical rule yet I'm not bitter, much.

elwar · 06/06/2002 14:28

Quite right Rhubarb, but tell that to the Scottish fans! I am Welsh by birth & parents, but have lived in England the majority of my life so maybe that's why I still love England to win. (Nothing to do with the Welsh team being hopeless, honestly!!! )

Any Scots like to explain it better (why you love to see England lose)? Or maybe you're all avoiding the world cup thread...oooh I am so sorry, being a complete b*tch today.

thumper · 06/06/2002 15:28

I am Scottish, and sorry to dissapoint you guys, and despite being ribbed endlessly about Scotland not qualifying, I will be supporting England tomorrow (well got to really, dh English and dd half!)

elwar · 06/06/2002 15:39

Nice one, Thumper.
