I was stuck on Pippa for yonks but have gone off it. Then latched on to Harriet but we live in Essex so poor child will be called 'Arriet'. Then liked Verity but Soapstar Superstar arrived on our screens.

I don't want anything in the Govt top 100 but want an old fashioned name, not made up...thats really unusual

see top 100 here

My surname is similar to Gilbert.

Can anyone help????

UCM · 12/01/2007 00:08

I like them all, but I am looking for that special 'one' that floats my boat. I have considered most of them already.

Thea is vereeeee nice.

New character on the ARchers this week (well, second-hand really) - Venetia, shortened to Neesha. Quite pretty really.

Or if we're thinking Italian, how about Florence?

Twinklemegan · 12/01/2007 00:13

Wilhemina (no, please don't do it to her!)

I like short names for sewing on to, or writing in school stuff.
Max of 5 letters.

Good for filling in forms with no space too. Very handy. Long names are rubbish for that.

UCM · 12/01/2007 00:19

Just want to add thank you for this. I am getting food for thought here.

'I am waiting for someone to come up with a name that everyone knew existed but hasn't been said before

How about Medea
Greek witch - killed all her children!

Beatrix (Potter, obv)

Nigella - that's a plant, too - otherwise known as 'Love in the Mist'

Then there was the Victorian fashion for naming children after virtues... Faith, Hope, Charity etc

I knew 2 sisters called Deirdre & Hilda...

My Grandma's middle name was Lottie

Elspeth

nappyaddict · 12/01/2007 00:20

dorothy - shortened to dot or dotty.

amelia

jayne

lily

mary

mavis

betty

elsie

paula

Carmenere - Portia would be classy if no one had ever invented a car that sounded the same. Bit like Mercedes - was a girls' name then some plonker went and named his car factory after his daughter!

Vespa is another one...

nappyaddict · 12/01/2007 00:22

mallory

daphne
