Who are the newbies?

I've only been on mn for a few months - August I think it was. Who else is a newbie? It's hard to tell from posts who is new and who is 'old'! Also, do any other newbies find

1 you can kill a thread stone dead with one flash of your nickname?

2 your threads fall off the active convos at an alarming rate

3 you spend ages thinking of something incredibly witty to say and no-one notices?

only joking really, love mn, am an addict!

Sorry rachfran

snig · 08/12/2006 18:07

i'm on a roll now!

QuadropheniaonIce · 08/12/2006 18:13

Just to say also, if you don't get replies don't worry, it happens to us all sometimes

rachfran · 08/12/2006 18:13

Don't worry Jam 77, I will answer to anything!

MerrilyTooBuzzi · 08/12/2006 18:14

I love to called newbie when actually in RL im not a spring chicken anymore
" newbie newbie newbie newbie newbie newbie newbie newbie newbie newbie" its so nice to say. And get this... I haven't been hanging around for ages, makes me sound even fresher!!

MissMistletoe · 08/12/2006 18:15

I'm new too, since about 6 weeks ago. I'm not loving it at the moment, due to a thread I started and inadvertently caused WW3 in 'news' section. And I was only commenting on something I'd read in the newspaper... seems I was insensitive with my thread title. On reflection, perhaps I was, but hey, to err is only human after all.

I Like the question about who the 'queen bees' are. Yeah, Cod, what about HumphreyComfreywhatsit? PointyDog? Any others stick out to anyone?

Do any other newbies (I hate that phrase, btw) find that a lost of posters are just being confrontational and argumentative for the sake of it? This, and people trying to 'large it' and 'big it up' put me off MN.

Jam77 · 08/12/2006 18:16

Off now to put DD to bed - have a lovely evening everyone - newbie out x

Boobooroastingonanopenfire · 08/12/2006 18:21

MissMistletoe: everyone on here has good days and bad days. I've seen most of the more prolific, long-term posters be really helpful to people.

There was one poster who was banned recently (quite rightly IMO) for being relentlessly inflammatory and unpleasant, but she's certainly not representative of the site as a whole.

Hope you start to enjoy the site more!

Quootiepie · 08/12/2006 18:24

Been here since July, so very new & yes to all 3!

Quootiepie · 08/12/2006 18:32

well, thats killed it

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 08/12/2006 18:33

quootie i think it must be tea time/bed time

Chandra · 08/12/2006 18:36

"You don't expect to be top dog in your first day in a new job," I don't know but... I was organising a campaign for Marslady to be president just one week after she joined!

I don't think it is about time spent here but about getting to be known by the rest. I used to be here quite a lot in the early years of DS, I no longer do and I certainly feel like a newby most of the time

MerryMellowmas · 08/12/2006 18:45

chandra I think you may have answered of my first threads I started iirc.

It was about whether to get a girl or boy puppy.

I wonder how many years you have to be here before you become and oldie??

Well done snig pmsl

Chandra · 08/12/2006 18:54

Oh! the puppy, how is she doing? is she living up to her name?

MossletoeAndWine · 08/12/2006 19:02

That's the problem with leaving work and commuting home, you miss so many posts! (Hello Boo and Rosy see I feel less like a newbie already!)

I actually joined because I was pg and was searching about childcare books and one name in particular seemed to be linked with this site.

But I actually started my own thread the other day (I am so proud) 'cos I saw that there was nothing in sports for the cricket!

MissMistletoe I don't know, because by the time I get round to reading something that might have been inflamatory the offending posts have been deleted and I am confused as to what the fuss was about! But I am still at the stage where I try to avoid anything too contentious!

MerryMellowmas · 08/12/2006 19:03

Oh she is fab! Well... most of the time. I have never seen dh so obsessed with anything/ anyone, its quite nice, I think

She thinks her name is noop-noop (ds2) calls her this and she answers everytime so I am unsure which is worse that or Snoop puppy dog

Mercy · 08/12/2006 19:04

MissMistletoe, don't fret so!

I am a 'newbie', as I said in the other thread it's more about like minded people, not how for how long you've been a mumsnetter for. Or indeed how wise or witty you are (I fail on both scores btw!)

It's not a competition (although I know it can feel like that sometimes). At teh end of hte day it's about sharing information/experiences, some light-hearted threads and some very informative/hotly debated issues.

Chandra · 08/12/2006 19:07

Aww I like noop noop!

2nervesnapartridgeinapeartree · 08/12/2006 21:37

I am surprised that so many on this thread are newbies.

Can I ask was it the publicity about 'youknowwho' that brought you here, as it was for me?

realjolly · 08/12/2006 21:44

I am a newbie, too...and indeed, to whomever that asked this...it was a bit the hoohah over a certain person that brought me here...must say, had a look in the past, but was to involved in other forums at the time, but then looked into it properly and became pretty muhc addicted...

MistletoeGolightly · 08/12/2006 21:44

2nerves, I was lurking for ages before you-know-what but I guess it was in a way the publicity that made me join as a paidup member - I felt it was so sad that a fantastic resource like mumsnet was under threat. Joining up seemed like solidarity I guess.

PS What a lot of Mistletoes on this thread! Hello all you others xxx

lulumama · 08/12/2006 21:45

it was the reason i joined too !!

MistletoeGolightly · 08/12/2006 21:49

Lulumama, who's minding the bar while you're over here?

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 08/12/2006 21:53

I can't honestly remember when I joined or where I saw MN first??? But I am pretty sure it was the GF thing. Jaysus my brain really is fried these days.

PeachesMcLean · 08/12/2006 21:55

Hello all, I'm fairly new too but get the impression that the people who seem cliquey are also the people who can spend hours on this thing! Peole who seem to post at all hours...

You know, I think it might have been the youknowwho media coverage which made me realise MN was there. Probably an increase in new members at that time... are we newbies the reason people think the site's gone downhill??? Am getting very confused by the Christmas names thoug - was hard enough getting to know people as it was!
