beckybrastraps · 26/09/2006 13:23

A knighthood. Not seriously?!

dmo · 26/09/2006 13:23

he was just doing his job which went wrong
our neighbour two weeks ago lost his little finger at work shall we give him an award?

Joolstoo · 26/09/2006 13:24

wot? an award?

surely survival is (re)award enough!

beckybrastraps · 26/09/2006 13:24

Actually, someone my mum works with got the BEM for doing the same job for 37 years. They called it a tremendous achievement. I call it a marked lack of ambition.

Joolstoo · 26/09/2006 13:26

becky - different thread I guess but not everyone is driven, some people like stability - perhaps they were really happy at work.

jazzyfax · 26/09/2006 13:26

Hey sounds like KEB's back under another pseudonym.

Of course Richard deserves an award, less deserving people have got one.

You wait until fattiemumma, she'll sort you out again.

TaraPalmerTomkinsonsNose · 26/09/2006 13:26

jazzy you are new arent oyu

beckybrastraps · 26/09/2006 13:28

OK. But was it worth the BEM? That was my point really. Where was the actual achievement?

Marina · 26/09/2006 13:29

becky, I'd agree with JT there (off-topic I know). In some types of job long service may mean lack of personal ambition but huge benefit to the organisation and service users. Am thinking of midwife in her late 60s who had worked at the same hospital for over 40 years, remembered ME being born there and was so incredibly kind to me when ds2 was stillborn.
The public and voluntary sectors are hugely enriched by these people.

beckybrastraps · 26/09/2006 13:31

She was a civil service secretary. But I understand your point Marina.

jazzyfax · 26/09/2006 13:34

No, I am not new. I am usually an observer not normally a contributor. But I do have strong feelings about this, Richard Hammond deserves recognition.

I think the fact Tinypoppett has managed to gather over 200 names on her petition shows how loved Richard is.

Joolstoo · 26/09/2006 13:36

so everyone we love gets a gong? that's a lot of metal

zippitippitoes · 26/09/2006 13:37

I'm afraid i thought the suggestion of knighting him was quite funny..I think you have to perform some thing above the call of suty or extraordinary

katierocket · 26/09/2006 13:38

"I agree that Richard Hammond should be given an award, or at least some form of recognition. Isn't a knighthood a little ambitious? Perhaps a OBE is more apt."

eh? he's a TV presenter FGS. I feel sorry for his family etc but an award ? madness.

Joolstoo · 26/09/2006 13:40

some other celeb knighthoods are questionable too aren't they? Like most things in modern life a knighthood has been somewhat devalued imho

I didn't say knight him, Tiny said that. I did perhaps suggest an OBE.

By the way Joolstoo, think of all that metal. Who would insure it? Perhaps an insuran broker in Filey or somewhere like that.

nailpolish · 26/09/2006 13:41

surely you are JOKING

some people are obsessed with celebrities

"oh i love richard hammond hes great"

you dont even know him!

yes its a shame but hes just like you and 1 - except his job is on the telly

nailpolish · 26/09/2006 13:43

lol

yes he will get a prize from TVQuick or sommat

thatll do nicely

even an OBE is too far

clumsymum · 26/09/2006 13:43

Look, I think RH is great. He makes me laugh, he cheers everyone up, has written a great science book we bought for ds's birthday, does presentations and stuff for charity, a general all round good egg ....

But I don't think he is actually deserving of any sort of Gong, not yet. If he had intentionally promoted the yorkshire ambulance stuff to raise szoooo much money, then maybe that would be moving in the right direction. But I think an award right now would be pretty silly TBH.

anniediv · 26/09/2006 13:44

Jazzyfax, yes, tinypoppett has collected 200 signatures on a petition, but that is out of a population of about 60 million. If anyone in this whole affair needs recognition it's the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and hospital staff, but even then, they were doing the job they're paid to do.

risingsun · 26/09/2006 13:45

Maybe he will be awarded sportsman of the year

nailpolish · 26/09/2006 13:45

how is he a sportsman? LOL

Darren Clarke is surely sportsman of the year

risingsun · 26/09/2006 13:56

nailpolish-just thought that sounded as ridiculous as a knighthood
