firstly we arrived at our Lodge in Vic Falls and were greated by

My maid in SA was called Beauty, and she was very pretty and was a lovely person!

fistfullofnappies · 08/09/2006 21:47

I hate these strange names threads, because Im sure my childrens names will turn up on one one day. You know, "I met a XXX and a YYY today. Weird!"

Two of my children have the same name, in masculine and feminine forms. It is a beautiful name, and also identifies the region they come from, and has other meanings significant to their heritage. Names can have deep meanings that are important to the family, so I dont find it at all surprising to use the same name twice. We have had the odd mix up where ds answered to dd's name, but it doesnt happen often.

I went to school with 3 brothers, Tom, Dick and Harry (not named in that order, and apparently the parents didn't realise, when naming the 3rd Thomas, that they already had a Richard and a Harry).

My due date was 28th December, and I really wanted to call the baby (if a boy) 'Christmas' - called 'Kit' for short. Sure enough, went into labour on Christmas Eve:- the midwife asked about names and I told her my boy's name choice, and she just looked at me and said "erm -no"

Is that "he of the dodgy jumpers"? I always thought he was gay?

potoroo · 10/09/2006 18:52

I saw a little girl at the pub the other day called Purple.

hockeymum · 10/09/2006 19:11

I love the South African names Zulu choose. My cousin lives there, his manager at work is called "Super" how cool is that. My dd was in awe when she met him (Incredibles had just come out and she was 2 1/2) she really thought he was a super hero. His maid is called "Goodness" which is lovely too.

My friend is a physio and used to work in maternity. One of the new Mums - Mrs Curtain
named her baby girl Annette, even though they all tried to persuade her not to! No joke.

There are several Pocahontas here, a Zorita, a DJ and many more lovely names!

malteser1 · 10/09/2006 19:40

Went to a house a while back as part of work - and the family are not the brightest sparks to be kind.
Heard the mum shouting Yavoannay! to her little girl playing on the other side of the street. When I asked where the unusual name had come from she said she saw it written in a magazine. I later saw the litle girl's name on a school book - It was Yvonne - and mum had never known how to pronounce it so this poor little girl was known as Yavoannay by everyone!

A woman I know named her son Darth Rehder, pronounced Rader. I found out one day when I walked into the room to hear someone say "Yeah, she named him Darth Rehder". Of course I busted out with "WHAT? Who on earth would name their child after Luke's evil father?" She was very offended and said "I did, what is wrong with it?" before huffing out.

I learned my lesson. But still...Darth Rehder?

LadyDooM · 25/10/2006 12:52

Oh and I just remembered a girl where I used to live had the name demonica. Her personality suited very close. This was in Virginia, U.S.

expatinscotland · 25/10/2006 12:54

I'm American.

The ONLY people I can think of who can even compare remotely for the Naff Name Sweepstakes are Australians.

LadyDooM · 25/10/2006 12:54

LOL I shouldn't have such a spotty memory. There was also a girl named Sony where I used to live in Virginia as well. Shes the one that should have been named Demonica, as I recall. Foul mouth that one...

BonyM · 25/10/2006 12:57

One of the mums I see in the school playground has three children. The two eldest have fairly ordinary names. The youngest is called Strummer...

LadyDooM · 25/10/2006 12:57

Hi expatinscotland!!

What part of America are you from?

We should chat sometime!!

Pinotmum · 25/10/2006 13:01

I work in a pre-school and see some unusual ones. A couple of weeks ago we were told we were to expect a new girl called Labia! Turned out to be Laiba - unfortunate apelling mistake was to blame .

LadyDooM · 25/10/2006 13:01

mrsjaja- Is twinkle her actual name or her nickname. My daughter had friends whose nicknames were twinkle, rooster, and peaches(all from same family)
