Was it embarrassing? what exactly do they do and how much does it hurt?!!

OP posts:

Why is it pervy? Had a brazilian lots before DS and found it a lot cooler in the summer than having all that insulation IYSWIM

Incidentally, found that waxing during late pregnancy is not necessarily a good idea. Went at 39 weeks and boy was it painfull. Ended up with very bruised and bleeding bits. Think it's something to do with the amount of Relaxin in the body..... wish I'd know this before I went!!

Hi, I have it done...YES its really painful!! but its much better than shaving cos it does'nt itch when the hairs start to grow back & also lasts alot longer! I will say if you do decide to have one done, you must exfoliate the area when showering etc... as it stops in growing hairs! Yummy!!!

ange44 · 07/05/2004 11:45

Me again! I think it looks great & make you feel good and its defo not pervy!!!!

Bugsy2 · 07/05/2004 13:55

Have had (have) Brazilian and yes it does hurt a bit but compared to childbirth or root canal work it doesn't even register. The pain is very fleeting.
Definitely DO NOT feel pervy. Been husbandless and boyfriendless for over a year but still have it done regularly because that is the way I like to be. If people want to be hairy that is fine with me but I like being smooth. I love the feeling of soft, smooth hairless skin. I slap moisturiser on every day for the same reason - thats not pervy either!!!
I don't feel ashamed of my body hair, just prefer being without it.

Momof2 · 07/05/2004 14:01

I have mine done every 4 weeks - along with legs, armpits, eyebrows, upper lip, bum crack, toes (how hairy am I?)
I do this for me - Dp only comments on my pits if they get hairy.
It does hurt but only fleetingly and my skin is in much better condition than when I was shaving every day (not my upper lip!)
Would never go back to shaving and if on the odd occassion that I need to use cream it now stings and causes a rash - I have been having this done for about 2 years now (and it costs 35 pounds for the lot)

I have sympathy with the 'old feminist' line, gingerbear. For ages I refused to do anything to myself that a man wouldn't do to his own body on the basis that 'why should I ... just to please Men?' (so no make up either). I have to say in the end I found it rather boring and after many conversations with men who would really rather like to have all the fun of choosing various ways to present their bodies, have come to the conclusion that women are lucky to have all the options that are available to them. Hair removal is classic case in point. The bits and bobs of hair I have are so half-hearted if left to themselves that it really is neater to trim them a bit in the same way that I do the hair on my head. If it makes me feel sexy that's a bonus but the primary reason I would give would be Variety!

starry · 07/05/2004 20:58

Totally agree with Hidden Spirit. Just because a man maight like a 'neat minge' does not by any far reach of the imagination make him a paedophile.
Anyway, I have a brazillian because I hate the look of a hairy bush so am I the perv? Don't think so. Much more odd that someone would shave their armpits and legs because of what other people/women think of them IMO.
Also if you saw the tiny knickers I wear then you would realise why I had to have a Brazillian Don't like to look like I am smuggling Golden Virginia in my pants.

Def. recommend exfoliating as ingrown hairs are NOT nice.

carla · 07/05/2004 21:08

Momoftwo ... I can surely understand all else .. but why the bum crack??? Who's going to be bothered by it???

champs · 07/05/2004 22:40

alot of salons have disosable knickers and use thong type ones for brazilians, this keeps clients knickers wax free while alowing them to keep their modesty.

Juniper-- have you used the sugaring yet?!
Hidden-- let salon know itis first time so they are more gentle.

Hercules-- Fashion is about trends, not just items that can be seen or shown off. Waxing and in this case a brazillian is very popular at the moment.

Removal of hair is a personal thing, like the type of knickers you wear or type of toothpaste. As has been explained, a brazillian is not removing of all the hair.
Peadophiles dont get their kicks out of women no matter how they look, that is why they are called peadophiles!! As for pervs, they get their kicks from all kinds of stuff, some are even turned on by the sight of lots of hair, should someone who has alot of hair remove it just because a perv likes lots of hair? of course not.

BTW-- hidden, dont wear tights when you go as it's better not to wear them after you have a wax.

champs · 07/05/2004 22:41

momof2-- £35 for all over wax is very good value!!

juniper68 · 07/05/2004 22:48

no champs i haven't used it yet. I'll keep you posted

Tex111 · 07/05/2004 23:00

Champs, thanks for clarifying my 'fashionable' statement. That's exactly what I meant.

Spots, it's very trendy right now for men to get their own version of the Brazilian - the old 'back, sack and crack'!!!! Sounds excrutiating.

HiddenSpirit · 07/05/2004 23:18

Thanks for the tip re tights Champs Told her on the phone when I made the appointment it was my first time, but will remind her when I get there too lol

Just asked DP if he was going to get his done (would only be sac though as he's smooth everywhere else already) and you can imagine his reply

stace · 08/05/2004 09:55

tex111, thanks for the empathy at least i dont feel like such a complete idiot now!!!

Also agree that waxing in late pregancy was so painful last time, i remember completely freaking out about and crying how the hell am i gonna have a baby if i cant even go through this!!!

Also remember saying that it was pretty sadistic/masochistic as no one would dream of plucking a chicken without killing (or at least anaethetizing it first!!! Just the mad rantings of a pregnant woman.

In so far as the pervy issue is concerned i would just mention that there was and still is a little confusion as to the difference between brazilian and hollywood and i think???? the negative feelings are more about the hollywood!!!

Anyway any one care to talk about or admit to owning a 'merkin' (SP)?????

cuppy · 08/05/2004 09:59

I'm intruiged Stace ... or maybe just naive - whats a merkin???

HiddenSpirit · 08/05/2004 10:32

according to google, it's a pubic wig Nope not got one of them lol

dogwalker · 08/05/2004 11:04

merkin ?!? . . I have my bikini line done . . quite high . . but don't know if it would be called a Brazilian. Certainly much better than shaving which grows back within a day and is very itchy. I have to shave legs (bottom half only, I don't bother with the top just immac them sometimes) and pits though as I couldn't leave them until it was time to wax again without looking like a gorilla. Personal preference though isn't it? My hubby likes me to look a bit tidy.

ScotsBird · 08/05/2004 12:24

Hi there, just to add my own tuppenceworth .. I have brazilian and underarm wax every 4 wks (legs are not hairy so no need). I do it a) cos i cant stand having a forest between my legs and uinder my arms, b) cos i feel sweaty and a bit dirty when hairy, c) cos dh and I both think it adds to our sex like and d) cos it looks better when wearing sleeveless tops / tiny thong knickers. My beautician makes me take knickers off and i end up with legs over her shoulders etc while she gets into all those "nooks and crannies". ALso had them all through pregnancy so that didnt have to be sheved for caesarean - midwife exclaimed to entire operating theatre "Oooooh - I've never seen one as neat as that before !!"

Was quite flattered !!

stace · 08/05/2004 12:39

check this out if you dont know (or even if you do !!) what a merkin is and have a giggle!!!

HiddenSpirit · 08/05/2004 14:00

hmm think I'll pass on them lol

champs · 08/05/2004 19:59

lol @ merkin. dont have one of them but I have had dh initials in one of my crazy moods.... cant believe i've told you all, must be lack of sleep

mambo · 08/05/2004 20:18

One very drunken night last August before we went on holiday I persuaded my dh to let me put hair removing cream all over his pubic hair and he looked like a plucked chicken and had amazing itches on long hot drive to france!!!!!

HiddenSpirit · 08/05/2004 20:20

Love it mambo

HiddenSpirit · 09/05/2004 23:55

Wish me luck Still no sign of periods and no more stomache ache, so it looks like I'm going for it lol

Will let you know how painful it was when I get home (in great detail)
