Trelis - do you ever get a rash with a close shave IYKWIM?

kalex · 02/05/2004 19:48

If you just want to wax legs, go for nads, first saw it on teleshopping, very sad I know, those were the days before PC. But you can find on net. You do not heat and so no burn factor. It washes of with soapy water, so no picking bits off. Comes with instructional video, and works!! I do my own legs and DP does my underarms. Have saved a fortune! BUT once tried to give myself a bikini wax - only bikini - and ended up with huge horrible bruises, so have decided that it a job for professionals.

trelis · 02/05/2004 20:01

Mears - never get a rash with the remington it really is a fantastic piece of equipment! Before I bought that though dh would use his mach3 and plenty of shaving mousse so no rashes then either. does itch when growing back though - whereas remington does not.

serenequeen · 02/05/2004 20:37

mears, i've got a remington bikini shape and trim too and i really like it. neat and tidy, no painful regrowth or itching.

serenequeen · 02/05/2004 20:38

quick and cheap too.

at Hidden Spirits burst mattress effect.

I sugar myself with Body Shop sugaring solution (smells soooo good you could eat it) a wooden spatula and loads of cotton strips. Warm the sugaring in the micro (think you are meant to put it in a bowl of hot water to avoid over heating but I am very impatient) Once you've got the hang of how thinly to apply the sugaring and how quickley to rip the strips of it's easy. You do need to take a big breath when you rip the first few but the quicker you do it the less uncomfortable it is. I love it (the effect NOT the process ) as for me is usually lasts about 6 weeks - really smooth - occasional hair can be plucked out. It does go a bit pink and spotty after you have done it but as you get better at it, the less pink it is and the quicker the rash goes down I think.

A word of warning - hold the skin around the area tightly. I had a nasty accident once. About 8 weeks after giving birth to my 2nd child I devided it was time to tidy uo down there. I had had stitches and a graze (stop reading if you are screamish) Anyway, basically, as I was doing the area umm....sort of underneath - close te the lip area, I was hurrying, applied the cotton strip to close to a certain area and as i ripped it off.... OUCH!!! I tore a piece of flesh of How gutted was I.....and DP for that matter....8 weeks without a shag and then I go and do that so have to wait for another graze to heal. Hehe. Has that put you off DIY sugaraing?

champs · 03/05/2004 00:03

starry.... OUCCCHHH!!!! yes I forgot to add that, dh was moaning at me to go, hold skin taut... also, put talc on area to be waxed before you wax, this helps to see area's that has been waxed and also guards skin. A nice trick is to hold hand on area you just waxed, this cuts the sting as it stops the air getting to the open pores.

Also... I know I'm getting a bit serious, but i feel obligated as I've given tips.... Make sure that you use an after wax lotion afterwards to help redness, moisturise skin, replace oils lost and help protect against ingrown hairs. Do not use any perfumed products, (soap, shower gel, deodrant etc) on area for 24hrs, do not have a hot bath/shower for 24hrs, do not wax the back of your knees, over a cut or a mole (put a plaster or petroleum jelly over it befor you start) do not have a massage straight after, do not go swimming (chlorine) and do not sun bathe for 24hrs.

sorry to be a bore but better to be safe and all that.

HiddenSpirit · 03/05/2004 10:29

Think I may go for it, but think I will go to a professional

Champs, you're not being boring, but very informative as I wouldn't have thought about any of those things. So a big thank you from me for the advice

Will let you know if/when I get it done and how painful it was (in great detail)

Nutcracker · 03/05/2004 17:47

God i just don't think i could. I'm not a wimp but i keep thinkng my section scar may be ripped back open. Stupid i know, but there you go

juniper68 · 03/05/2004 17:55

I've bought the body shop sugaring stuff and am thinking of having a go at doing a brazilian. I wouldn't dare go to a beauty therapist to have it done. If It's really bad then i'll just use cream as usual.
I don't think it's pervy, i don't like hair on my DHs genitals (though there's no way he'd remove it ) and i don't fancy young boys. In fact I like em old, easier to catch

champs · 05/05/2004 18:27

thanks hiddenspirit
nutcraker--- you have to wait a good while before you have a wax over a scar!! as it may open or get infected.
juniper--- try a very small area first to test!!

I also forgot to add that you should gently exfoliate your skin in between waxing, to help protect from ingrowing hairs.

HiddenSpirit · 05/05/2004 21:14

Well I'm booked in for a Brazillian on Monday

May have to rearrange it though as I'm getting tell tale signs of period appearing soon (sore boobs, slight stomach ache)

LipstickMum · 05/05/2004 21:19

Hidden, I've heard that due to the build up of hormones in your body before your pd, your pain threshold goes up. What I mean is, you can tolerate more pain, apparantly. Hope you remember that on Monday

HiddenSpirit · 06/05/2004 10:47

Don't think I will have it done if I have my period. That would be a bit too embarrassing for me lol

starry · 06/05/2004 17:03

Christ i'd stay away if I had my period. Heard a story once about a woman who was having a Brazilian while on her period and the therapist accidently and unknowingl stuck a cotton strip to her tampon string.......ripped the cotton strip off and........Yeouch!!!! SHe pulled out more then the hairs

LipstickMum · 06/05/2004 18:21

eeeeeeeuuuuuuuwww! Definitely not if pd has started, but in the days before, that's the time to get it done

champs · 06/05/2004 20:30

yuk

spots · 06/05/2004 21:49

Hiddenspirit make sure you wear old pants, or pants that are somewhere between being old and being dignified enough for a beauty therapist to see... (if there are such pants in the world). I thought I would short cut the undressing stage when I went for a brazilian and went knickerless. Was mortified to find that there is a sort of etiquette involved and even if you plan only to leave a stripe behind they don't actually want to SEE YER BITS! Lots of sort of fan dancing (pun please) with a napkin instead. Prob. something to do with stretchiness identified by twiglett... they could see all the way up to your brain if they pulled hard enough.

juniper68 · 06/05/2004 22:00

arghhh at the tampon. The poor thing though, how embarassing.

thanks for the tip champs

gingerbear · 07/05/2004 00:14

Why????
I am an old feminist at heart.

At uni I had dredlocked armpits, hairy legs and fanny.

i cannot EVER imagine wanting to put myself through this!!!

HiddenSpirit · 07/05/2004 00:38

Still no sign of period, but still got sore boobs. Will see if they appear by Sunday/Monday morning. If they haven't appeared by time I finish work I'll be going to get it done

Gingerbear I guess it's personal preference

Haven't had one (not brave enough) but don't think it's pervy or all about men. I think a lot of the time it's just about feeling tidy, if that's what you like, and it's very fashionable now too. It also makes things more sensitive 'down there' with the hair removed which can be very sexually stimulating for a woman. I use a cream regularly, hate the toupee down my pants look but would love to try waxing one day.

Stace, can't believe it.... I did the same thing trying to trim myself while PG!!!! I was over 9 months pregnant and thought I would tidy up for the delivery. Couldn't see a thing down there over my huge belly, hand slipped and I yelped! Won't be trying that this time around.

hercules · 07/05/2004 08:57

I just dont get why either. I do my underarms and legs though but cant understand why you'd do the other. If for fashion - that's even more bizarre! It's not like the latest handbag you show off to everybody.
Please explain the fashion bit.

HiddenSpirit · 07/05/2004 10:28

It's a personal preference for those that do, just as it is for those that don't.

I would like someone to explain why they think a brazillian is "pervy paedophile thing" it is not getting all the hair removed. It is tidying it up! Basically just getting your bikini line done a bit further than just your bikini line.

I am not doing this for my DP, but for me. I take great offence that people think he is a perv/paedophile because he likes it!

What I find strange is people who shave their arms & legs just because they are worried about what someone else thinks.
