hilarious I love the fact that they look like parking tickets for each borough (but that they haven't done Richmond}

OP posts:
MissChief · 13/07/2006 21:13

and you're definitely genuine too

Snafu · 13/07/2006 21:15

I am rarely jealous of ignorant and selfish people, bigfatcar. No matter how much money they have.

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:22

!!!!!

MissChief · 13/07/2006 21:30

fight dying down then? not much on telly

vickiyumyum · 13/07/2006 21:30

i'm not even sure why i'm posting this as i'm bound to get slated, especially as i haven't been on mn much these days due to the nature of some of the posts towards other mn members.

But here we go, why worry so much about 4x4 per se, we/you should be worried about cars in general, and the effects that they have on the enviroment and to the safety of our children and loved ones. it certainly wasn't a 4x4 that nearly ploughed down me, my 16 week old dd and my 4 y.o ds on the way to pick up ds1 from school the other day. it was a mini driven by a woman talking on her mobile phone! so i would say the argument re safety is a load of old baloney! enviroment you may have a point.

the main problem here is that the thread has turned into a general bitch fest, rather than stating your arguments and a proper adult debate. perhaps some of you shouldn't take it all so personally and that applies to those for and against 4x4.

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:32

well said vickiyumyum..I think!!!

MissChief · 13/07/2006 21:32

but there's been no coherent debate for 4x4s, that's why..got to fill the vacuum somehow

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:34

A child is more likely to die if hit by a 4 x 4 (hard bits of the vehicle are at head height I presume) but are they more likely to be hit by one in the first place? Does, for example, the height mean the driver can spot a child running out from between parked cars easier whereas a speeding mini would hit them?

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 21:34

you choose to drive any car fast, you hit someone, live with the consequences

you choose to drive anycar dangerously, you hit someone, live with the consequences

you choose to drive a 4x4, you hit someone, live with the consequences

If you purchase a 4x4 vehicle knowing that in acollision with a pedestrian you are more likely to kill them, how do you live with that choice if it actually happens, knowing that in a smaller car they may have lived.
'i drive carefully' is bollox, we all endeavour to be safe on the roads, but accidents do happen and your choice in vehicle can greatly decrease the risk of injury to other road users and pedestrians, how people can disregard this is beyond me.

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:34

What I don't understand is why you all equate 4x4 drivers with ignorant, rich cows that would quite happily mow down children in an instant?? I can assure you all I am not like that!!

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 21:36

If that was the case though SD people would never get hit by buses, and they do.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:38

I didn't say never but in comparison to other vehicles is it less? Not many people get hit by buses.

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:39

and another thing - I understand about the greater injury fron being hit by a 4x4, but where is the evidence to suggest we 4x4 drivers are more likely to hit someone in the firstplace??

MissChief · 13/07/2006 21:41

well, recent survey on use of phones found 4xr dirvers 4 x as likely (how appropriate) to be using one while driving and therefore to havE AN accident. that do you?

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 21:41

I've seen the result of someone being hit by a bus and it is heartbreaking. As I said it doesn't have to be that someone doesn't see something, sometimes accidents just happen and to know that my choice in vehicle made the outcome more horrific, I just couldn't buy one. I do strongly believe there should be exclusion zones round schools.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:43

Why don't we all drive cars made of marshmallow so they're nice and soft?

Seriously though. There will always be a car or type of car that is more likely to kill a pedestrian than any other type/make of car. Where do you stop? How about vans. They must be as dangerous because they're heavy and high.

Cars with bull bars are worse. They're usually 4x4s mind you.

vickiyumyum · 13/07/2006 21:45

i am sure more people get hit by general cars than 4x4, purely because of the maths. ther are far more 'normal' cars around than 4x4, therfore making it more likely that you will be hit by one.

it may be more likely that you will die if you are hit by a 4x4 than if you were hit by a car but i'm sure most people who buy a 4x4 as does anyone buy a car, buy it because it drives nicely, they like it, they can afford it. i certainly didn't choose my car because i was thinking about how it would/could damage someone in the event of a crash (a vauxhall vectra in case you wanted to know, not a 4x4)

MissChief · 13/07/2006 21:45

but vans do something and are irreplaceable. 4x4s in the main don[t and are.

MissChief · 13/07/2006 21:46

glad i madfe that clear

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:48

I have a hands-free kit in my car in case of dire emergencies, but I try never to use my phone in the car - unlike, it has to be said, the drivers of other makes of car that are not 4x4!!!

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:48

Does a Volvo XC90 count as a 4 x 4?

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 21:48

I don't know where you stop, but i do know where you'd start. All cars to an extent are killing machines and in an ideal world they would only be driven out of neccessity but lets face it we all love the convenience. I think people should consider whether it is necessary to drive a car with higher chances of causing fatality to other road users and pedestrians, If its not necessary then why up the anti. People drive vans for work reasons etc but if they drove them just for the shear hell of it (and lets face it who would) then the same would apply.

Oh chill out about the fact that if a child gets hit by one of these vehicles, the child is far more likely to die.

Who cares? It's individual choice and there's Lebanon to worry about. And after all, it's not your child is it, so what's the problem?

Sheesh.

I take it you were being sarcastic Caligula?... No, I know you were being sarcasitc...weren't you?

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:50

Can I also say in my defence that I do live in the Country - very rural, and not in the centre of London!!
