hilarious I love the fact that they look like parking tickets for each borough (but that they haven't done Richmond}

Justifying it though jazzi buy saying 'well other people do this' is lame I'm afraid, regardless what others do, surely we all have a responsibility to ensure not only the safety of ourselves but others as well. If you choose to drive a 4x4 your simply increasing the risk to others regardless of how safe you drive

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:52

Does a Volvo XC90 count as a 4 x 4??

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 21:53

I have no idea SD I don't even know what one is

Snafu · 13/07/2006 21:53

Having just googled it I would say, yes, Soupy.

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:54

Is it not natural to want to provide security to our own family though as well??

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:54

Well, it's a "large off roader" in the ENCAP categories, the same as a Jeep Cherokee, BMWX5 etc.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:55

Anyway, it scored higher in the "pedestrian safety" tests than, amongs others, a VM POlo.

MissChief · 13/07/2006 21:55

false security - they'e more\ likely to roll

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 21:56

yes but there are plenty of safe cars without choosing one that endangers others, its like two people fighting one with a plastic sword and one with a samuri

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:56

As did the Nissan pathfinder (whatever that is)

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 21:57

a vm polo SD

Caligula · 13/07/2006 21:57

Charlottesweb - yes!

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 21:59

If I felt that this was about the safety of children/dogs/old people, I would agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying - but I don't think that is what it is about. It is more about loathing the sterotype of the sort of person that drives one!!!

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 21:59

But mykidsmum, an XC90 is safer for pedestrians than a Polo or Clio but would be vilified and "ticketed" as being a danger whereas the 2 small cars wouldn't, despite them being apparently more dangerous to pedestrians.

Charlottesweb · 13/07/2006 21:59

Phew!

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:00

as Misschief said they are more likely to roll which isn't included in the research

Caligula · 13/07/2006 22:00

vickiyumyum, people may not actively choose a car on the basis that it is safer if they hit a pedestrian, but once they know that a car they like is more likely to kill a pedestrian, then surely they do take that into account? I certainly would and i'm not mother teresa. I'd just assume that decent, civilised people would bear it in mind.

MissChief · 13/07/2006 22:00

not for me it[s not J. Life's too short, I hate them becuase they are threatening to my kids. and there's nothing more importnat to me!

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 22:01

Oh, so they're dangerous because they'll roll onto a pedestrian??

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:01

also 4x4 are not vilified on safety isssues alone

edam · 13/07/2006 22:02

It's not the driving ability of 4x4 drivers that's the key issue, it's the fact that when they do hit someone, that someone is dead. Even if the 4x4 is within the speed limit. Normal cars hit your legs, then you are scooped up onto the bonnet, and finally thrown off. So the initial force of the collision is on your lower limbs. Not good, but survivable (on average, 75 per cent if the car is doing 30).

4x4s are higher and heavier. You don't get thrown on the bonnet, you either (adult) get several tons of metal in the abdomen or (child) get hit in the head. And then crushed under the car. Both highly fatal.

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:02

once they have crashed I believe (over)

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 22:02

"once they know that a car they like is more likely to kill a pedestrian, then surely they do take that into account?" So, best you don't by a Clio or a Polo then. Buy an XC90 instead.

MissChief · 13/07/2006 22:02

if they roll onto a dog, that's fine by me. cat a different matter though.

Beetle73 · 13/07/2006 22:03

When forced to squeeze my handy hatchback along the side of a fat 4x4 on a narrow London residential street, I breath deeply and take satisfaction from the idea that if two 4x4s were to meet in similar circumstances, they'd both be stuck.
