hilarious I love the fact that they look like parking tickets for each borough (but that they haven't done Richmond}

Cant be without mine, I am tumbleweed rural. We have been snowed in on many occasions made worse by the fact we are on the top of a steep country road which they always seem to forget to grit. A must for me im afraid, I would love to have a sporty number but the country lanes would rip it to shreds with its overhanging bushes and pot holes.

morningpaper · 14/07/2006 10:36

I thought the fun of being snowed in is that you are snowed in

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 10:39

I'm in north ascot, not especially rural, but the road down by dd's school is awful. A dead end with no tarmac, and it bogs up in winter and weater streams down one side and then there is no parking unless your have a 4x4. dp was workign in camberley too, and we used to go offroad to a big pond down there too at lunchtimes, and we go to the forest and ponds a lot near here. With four I get out of the house as much as poss and turning into a right country girl! Not long after we moved though, dp's office relocated to woking so he had to get another car, and drive to work. But we've got used to it.

MissChief · 14/07/2006 10:40

oh and ikwym about protecting yr kids, kelly. I guess that's why i get so about 4x4s as I'm on foot so often with my kids and i feel them threatened. but i do admit it's not just 4x4 drivers who are dangerous - to my 5 yr old though, at his height they are v scary when walking along a narrow pavement!

tenalady · 14/07/2006 10:41

Aha, yes,yes I agree but not useful when Im snowed in and dh hasnt made it home. Have you noticed how it always dam well snows through the day, once your loved ones have left the house and then the problem comes when they cant get back.

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 10:41

don't know waht the snowed in business is about, but my 4x4 was crap in ice, that was one thing that it wasn't good for. It would skid going round corners, so I had to creep round and learn to handle it! There is def a skill to driving them, you can't treat them like a normal car whcih is possibly where people mess up. If I tried to go round a roundabout in my old terrano at the speed I do in the MPV I would end up spinning off.

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 10:45

yeah and outside dd's school here is no path only one cars width on the road, and so it's even worse. I try to park outside and leave the kids in the car, as it isn't safe (that's going to start another one off isnt it! ) But it's unfair to blame the car when it is the driver that is the problem. We get a silly cow driving one of those crappy merc MPVs who comes down there at 30mph and terrifies me. She hurtles down there (always late) parks right outside the gate, leaves the car (with all pink fluff inside) and runs in for the kids.

tenalady · 14/07/2006 10:46

Nooooooo, will give a Terrano a miss then. Ive towed my dh with his Merc out of snow and given folk lifts where their cars have been snowdrifted in.

Jazzi · 14/07/2006 12:14

Hello again, just been out in said 4x4, and was surrounded by unsafe, aggressive drivers, none of which were in a 4x4 - mainly BMW's around here!!

morningpaper · 14/07/2006 12:18

Well Jazzi thank god they WEREN'T in 4X4s because then they were be EVEN MORE DANGEROUS, wouldn't they?

MissChief · 14/07/2006 12:36

joelallie · 14/07/2006 13:27

What's a 5x?

jampots · 14/07/2006 13:30

BMW X5

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 13:32

x5 classic mummy tractor. They are bloody huge, very nice, but not really a proper 4x4. I want a pathfinder.

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 13:33

or a range rover sport, but I'd have to win the lottery for that one!

joelallie · 14/07/2006 13:39

Oh I see.

Can I have a sherman tank? Stop this p*ssing about with stupid little vehicles. I want a car that makes it's own parking space!!

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 13:41

Oooh taht would be so much fun! Crush all the silly little 3 door jobbies! Or sod wheels altogether, I want a helicoptor.

SoupDragon · 14/07/2006 13:53

Edam, you're missing my point entirely. Why target 4x4s when a whole raft of smaller cars score the same as they do in pedestrian safety tests? In fact, most cars score pretty badly in pedestrian safety tests when you compare those results with the scores for passenger safety. As far as pedestrian safety goes, the problem is not 4x4s at all but all car manufacturers. For example, I think Vauxhall seems to score consistently badly (1*) across all categories. A far better campaign would be to lobby manufacturers to make cars safer for pedestrians (without compromising passenger safety).

Making melodramtic statements about 4x4 drivers not giving a flying fig about killing children if they hit them etc etc is just plain silly when you consider that most cars score just as badly. IIRC, very few scpre 3/4 available stars. Most come in at 2*s or 1 with the few notable exceptions who score 0. Not all cars are covered by the list but it still makes scarey reading IMO.

I guess 4x4s are more energy/pollution heavy ("guess" because I can't be ar$ed to research it ) but to condemn them on safety is misleading when other cars are, quite frankly, just as bad.

And to condemn their drivers as being inconsiderate for not thinking about whether their vehicle choice is more dangerous to pedestrians is ridiculous. How many of you checked your car's pedestrian safety score? I know I didn't.

The pedestrian issue isn't a problem soley for 4x4s at all.

"Those two models don't give you some kind of free pass into '4x4s are no different to any other car' heaven. They clearly are - look at the results. If you've got eight green fish, and two blue fish, the average fish is still green."

The average fish might be green but you can't comdemn all blue fish because they are in a minority, especially when a large proportion of, say, the octopii are green too. And you need to look at the results too. Only 2 of the Large Offroaders listed scored 0 stars. 10 scored 1 and 2 scored 2. There are a good number of cars in all the other categories who score only 1 star and many more who manage 2. Very few manage 3 and I don't think any mananage 4/4. Most cars are bloody dangerous for pedestrian, Individually the 4x4s do not appear to be hugely worse than individual other cars.

SoupDragon · 14/07/2006 13:56

You can have a Pathfinder, Kelly, that's one of the 2* Pedestrian Safety 4x4s.

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 14:03

wow really? its built like a tank. Really nice tho . Fuel economy is quite good too, so it can't be one of the worst for the enviroment. Better get saving!

I don't believe that anyone really considers it when buying tho. We considered size, reliability, then price, then fuel economy, speed, functions, in about that order. It's nto that I don't care, I try to drive carefully and considerately, but I can't buy a car that is going to hug on impact!

MissChief · 14/07/2006 14:06

out of interest, do you buy thses things brand new?? if so..
Personally couldn't stomach the massive depreciation as soon as i drove it out the showrm..dh has had a couple of prestige cars but generally been a couple of yrs old when bought.

Kelly1978 · 14/07/2006 14:18

Nooo. No way I could face that neither! Buy cars a couple of years old with low mileage as poss, then they are over that big drop. Our last one was a couple of years old with 20k on the clock.

MissChief · 14/07/2006 14:21

i was just thinking of that rather naff bbc1 prog a few weeks ago "i want it now" or sth - family really wted a range rover and were saving up the money to get one new! they seemed comfortably off but not particularly wealthy, just stupid then!
