what do you do when they get older?
i mean do you stop them till they are 18 secretly scoffing choc when they are in bed
do you give them vgradual exposure ot it like a drug meanign that the sweets become a sought after object of desire

or what

We have a lot of homemade sweets. I don't stop DS1 from getting sweets at parties etc. And he does sometimes get a small amount of chocolate at home, always the good stuff though.

LadyCodofCOdford · 04/06/2006 22:41

but i mean what is your plan for older?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 04/06/2006 22:41

Oh, by homemade sweets, I mean cakes etc, not candy.

Rowlers · 04/06/2006 22:41

Dunno but I can't deprive my two year old the odd treat.
The look of sheer delight when she gets a tiny morsel of mummy's chocolate stash, oh it melts my heart.

LadyCodofCOdford · 04/06/2006 22:41

do oyou do a guided tour of a sweet shop
" this is a candy shrimp, this si a sour worm...."

Not sure. I mean, when he has his own money, he will make his own choices, I guess.

Do I have to have a Plan? I barely have a plan day to day, never mind for years from now.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2006 22:41

dunno, i fed my daughter banana cakes from an MN recipe that includes plenty o' sugar and butter and yummies like that.

she loves 'em.

she also likes her dad's homemade ice cream, full of refined sugar and other yummies.

and i give her frozen banans rolled in chocolate and hundreds and thousands.

she loves those, too.

LadyCodofCOdford · 04/06/2006 22:41

Well, he manages to mooch sweets off people enough, so he's not totally lost.

I tend not to give him food I wouldn't eat myself. I don't really eat sweets, or at least I try not to. Hence, I don't give him sweets.

cece · 04/06/2006 22:42

My two have sweets and choc about once a week. Cakes we have as snacks most days. And biscuits! Blush

my dd's best friend's parents are both dentists and she is obsessed with sweets. She's 14 and has sweets hidden in her bedroom, always brings toffee popcorn when she's watching a dvd here. She's not fat as she swims a million miles a week and runs on school team.

Bozza · 04/06/2006 22:43

But nobody who has responded has said they don't give their child any sugar ever.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2006 22:43

we had 'candy day' - one day a week when we got sweets w/pocket money from the shop.

worked okay. neither of us is a sugaraholic.

but i love to bake and make goodies.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/06/2006 22:43

Hmm, maybe some pocket money can go on sweets?

Sweets were Forbidden for me when I was a kid, and that didn't really work. We were forever stealing money off my parents to buy sweets! And both my sister and I would gorge like mad.

But then, the food at home was dreadful, absolutely horrible, canteen food at uni was a million times better than mom's cooking.

I notice my friend who rarely allows these things, her kids sneak extra bits of them when they are at my house. Whereas my two do not sneak extra bits.... Not sure if there is anything to this - guess mine don't see them as a treat whereas her kids do...

Rowlers · 04/06/2006 22:45

I reckon you either like sweet things yourself and tend to share them with your children who inherit your sweet tooth or you prefer savoury and your kids follow your genetic inclinations.
Must be a bugger though if you are savoury lover and they are sugar fiends.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/06/2006 22:45

Why does there need to be a plan?

They will do what they want very soon anyway, doesnt mean that parents should consider "exposing" them to sweets at some point to ensure they become balanced adults.

desperatehousewife · 04/06/2006 22:45

i don't want sweets/choc to be a reward or anything, and don't want to be precious about it. My 4 yr old has bits of choc (either in biscuit form or mini box of smarties) fairly regularly. Can't get excited bout it i'm afraid.

LadyCodofCOdford · 04/06/2006 22:45

yes finbar doesnt have cripss in her house
we laught htta her dd is MAD on them

Hmm, I like sweets, but am not ... I'm not particularly fat, just quite wide, iyswim. I run, I bike, I'm a Big Girl.

Anyway, if my kids aren't allowed junk, then I can't eat junk when they're around, which means I mostly can't eat junk. So far, I seem to lose weight per child, so I'm reasonably happy with this plan.
