Thanks. Does your village have a primary school?

sharklet · 27/02/2006 15:21

Yes a really good one, it has a pre-school connected with it too.

PeachyClair · 27/02/2006 15:41

I think I mentioned Crewkerne further down, in an oops I forgot Crewkerne sort of way.

I was surprised how cheap the houses were, have to say it ahs a posh reputation, not necessarily a bad thing though.

better now the nightclub has gone perhaps? Oh the memories Wink

SiobhanW · 27/02/2006 16:52

Between Bath and Chippenham are some fab villages - Marshfield has a great primary school and then for senior school you can chose from the 2 good ones in Chippenham, dreadful one in Yate or Bath or if Catholic the brilliant St Gregory's in Bath. Chipping Sodbury is a nice(ish) market town but make sure you stay the Sodbury side and don't drift in to Yate. For Somerset what about Midsomer Norton, etc on the South side of Bath. Malmesbury is good in Wiltshire as is Tetbury in Glos.
Now at the risk of upsetting anyone ... if God were to give the world an enema he'd shove the hose in Trowbridge or Melksham !!
And yes B - O - A is a nice, compact little town with good transport links .... so happy hunting!

PeachyClair · 27/02/2006 17:03

Midsomer Norton- got friends there too (I am relaising just how many people I know!!) and went to a wedding there (nearby anyway- paulton? not sure) two years ago, would give that a look too. What's radstock like?

Steppy1 · 27/02/2006 17:20

...we're in a beautiful village called Winterbourne Bassett very near to Avebury (world wide historical interest site) located on the foot of the marlborough downs... all the villages around here are fab with good and succesful village schools so Berwick Bassett, Broad Hinton (that's nearest primary school) Winterbourne Monkton, Avebury... close to Junt 16 of the M4 (approx 10 mins) but also to Marlborough (7 miles) and Swindon (7 miles).... Somerset also looks good too...........

Steppy1 · 27/02/2006 17:38

Princesspeahead.... market lavington has a fab private school if that's your bag - Dauntsey's. I was quite anti private education until I had the opportunity to do some sports coaching (netball & athletics) it totally blew my mind away... fab school, with fab facilities, very strong sense of discipline and "pride", plus strong ethics....... but then I guess that's waht you're paying for ?!!!

Gem13 · 27/02/2006 18:46

My Mother is telepathically shouting at me to write that Dauntsey's is in West Lavington.

She was a Market Lavington evacuee.

Interesting to know that is good for previously non-private-interested parents though.

Well my list is now huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge. But great info thanks. If you see a little silver audi whizzing through the streets over the next 2 days that will be me trying to fit everything in!

Is it Midsomer Norton or Radstock that has the massive slag heap dominating it?

Gem13 · 27/02/2006 19:26

Both?

Can't say I've spent much time in either but have put them in the Trowbridge category in my mind.

tamum · 27/02/2006 19:27

Radstock has the slag heap. I don't like Radstock at all- used to live in Midsomer Norton and it's OK but not exactly lovely. What is mostly alarming me on this thread is that I keep reading posts and thinking "oh, I used to have a boyfriend who lived there", but when I found myself thinking that for the 4th or 5th time I decided I should avoid the thread Blush

DumbledoresGirl · 27/02/2006 19:30

Tamum, I taught in Midsomer Norton for a very brief spell in the 1980s. I am sorry to say I thought it and Radstock and Trowbridge and Westbury et al were the most depressing dumps I had the misfortune to know.

I am sure I would feel differently now.

tamum · 27/02/2006 19:35

Alright, you got me, I was trying to be polite. It's not OK at all although the main street was quite sweet from what I remember. I went to school in Shepton Mallet, so don't remember the primary schools there :)

booge · 27/02/2006 19:52

The Palace at Crewkerne...not such sparkling memories for me!!!

For interesting names you could try

Nempnett Thrubwell,
Farington Gurney
Westonzoyland
Middlezoy

wheretogo · 27/02/2006 20:03

Well having searched prices, schools, crime etc. in each area this is my plan so far:

Malmesbury
Cirencester
Chippenham
Corsham
Bradford on Avon
Staverton (new development worth a look?)
Devizes
Market Lavington
Frome
Wincanton
Castle Cary
Lovington
Crewkerne
Villages round Yeovil
Ilminster
Wells
Clevedon

phew.........................

tamum · 27/02/2006 20:10

That won't take you long then :o

(I was born in Malmesbury, it's a very sweet town)

Booge, I always liked Queen Camel in the weird name stakes.

rarrie · 27/02/2006 20:29

Hi, They all seem like very good choices. I only know of the top 4 places, but thought you might want to know that the local reputations for the best schools would be in this rank:

Cirencester / Chippenham
Corsham
Malmsbury.

Assuming you're planning on state secondary, of course!

Both Ciren and Chippenham have got very good schools... Either Deer Park or kingshill are very good, not a lot between them!(Ciren) and either Hardenhuish or Sheldon (Chippenham) but not so much Abbeyfields.

Corsham School has got a good rep too, although don't know loads about it.

Likewise, I don't know loads about Malmesbury school either, but when I was looking for teaching jobs a couple of years back, I was told by some other teachers that it was okay, but that I could find nicer schools! I was told that the kids can be a bit rougher there at times!

Don't know if this is of any help to you, If not ignore it Wink

Enid · 27/02/2006 20:30

booge

you have forgotten

Piddletrenthide
and
Huish Episcopi

cod · 27/02/2006 20:35

Flossam · 27/02/2006 20:42

Enid, did you see my post lower down? Grin

DOn't talk to them anymore so if you are like 'OMG she knows them!' then I won't mind!! Although her mum was lovely IIRC. Smile

Gem13 · 27/02/2006 20:44

Being close to the sea can be overated without sand...

sharklet · 27/02/2006 20:46

I miss the sea (sniff)

Steppy we're up the road from you in Aldbourne

JanH · 27/02/2006 20:48

We are quite close to the sea but it's radioactive up here Angry

Surfermum · 27/02/2006 20:58

I know nothing about Ciren schools as I was childless when I lived there. There is a really lovely pub though called the Twelve Bells, run by Bob the cantankerous landlord. Real ales, lovely food and a great atmosphere. I miss it Sad. But we do have miles of gorgeous beaches where I am now Smile.

I had to move to Ciren with xp's job, and when I first visited, it was a dull January weekend and I thought it was the back of beyond. I really, really loved it there though and always said that if it was by the sea it would be perfect. It was the first place I'd lived where I didn't know anyone, but I found everyone really friendly and I'd made friends and was being invited out within a couple of weeks.
