PrincessPeaHead · 26/02/2006 20:47

marlborough is great, good state and independent schools, very pretty in town and the villages around, easy to get into chippenham, bath and swindon (useful for trains and cinemas and out of town shopping but not much else), very kid friendly, nice waitrose

wheretogo · 26/02/2006 20:47

Street Lamps always reminds me of Nether Stowey and their battle NOT to have street lamps.

OK if you're in a car and safe, funny how the ones with the voice are rarely the little old ladies walking home from their cleaning jobs in the winter darkness.

Sorry.

If uou don't like St pauls then deffo not Bridgy!! .

Marlborough supposed to be really nice.

DumbledoresGirl · 26/02/2006 20:50

Oh you can keep Thornbury on your list then. It is a bit further from Bristol than that.

PeachyClair · 26/02/2006 20:56

\linkwww.rightmove.co.uk/action/publicsite.PropertySearch\ did a search on 40 miles around Bristol, max price 180k. If you eliminate the in Bristol ones there is a good selection of ideas}

I'd forgotten Crewkerne. FIL lives near trhere and loves it (he lives inMArtock, don't know whether to classify as town or village but seems nice}

When I was looking at Bristol Uni last year Thornbury came up a few times and DH liked the idea (he works in Bristol so knows area better than I).

PeachyClair · 26/02/2006 20:57

Link didn't work- sorry.

Go onto Right Move and enter Bristol, Taunton, Gloucester in turn, on the search options enter max price 180k, 40 miles radius, 3 bedrooms. Gives a really good cross section of properties.

Oooh, yes, I was in Marlborough today, and it is lovely. House prices are quite expensive tho, but you're paying for that as the town is a "pretty town". People are quite posh but friendly and school is quite good. (Not as good as Chippenham's mind) but alright! If I could afford it, I'd buy there!

tortoise · 26/02/2006 21:26

I really like Castle Cary.Nice town, good choice of shops and school is nice.My boys are happy there.reception teacher is lovely.I personally dont like Wincanton and wouldnt want to live in Yeovil.

Flossam · 26/02/2006 21:29

Nearly chokes at Martock being a nice place to live <

Sorry PC, my 1st boyfriend lived there. he and his sister smoked earlier, drank earlier and she took all sorts of drugs, nothing for kids to do. Depressing, miserable, and I seem to remember kids getting raped and a bloke who used to shag cats....

DH and I grew up in Wiltshire and still visit once a month or so.

I love Bradford On Avon (was born there) and would love to go back. Small town, lovely park and area to walk around, quite rural, easy to get into Bath, small town, not many shops but generally very pretty place. Nice walks along the river and canal, pretty wharf area.

We have relatives that live in Melksham and Trowbridge. Trowbridge has quite a decent town centre for local shopping, tescos, nice park in the centre.

Melksham has a sainsburys, reasonable town centre, not as big as Trowbridge, not many chain shops. Fairly reasonable park. Melksham always seems to me to be dominated by the Avon factory.

My choice would out of the above 3 would be Bradford On Avon without a doubt.

I've no idea on the schools, there is only one secondary school in Bradford and 2 infants I think.

Trowbride, several secondary schools and probably lots more infants.

And in Melksham I beleive there is only 1 secondary school and no idea about infants

Gem13 · 26/02/2006 21:39

FWIW - I don't like Bradford-on-Avon, Trowbridge, Westbury or Shepton...

but Frome is much maligned - some lovely old (cheap!) houses, active arts scene, and good schools (St Johns is popular). Marlborough is pretty, and Devizes seems interesting.

PrincessPeaHead · 26/02/2006 21:44

Actually Devizes is very nice, and if you want a smaller place but v close to Devizes, Market Lavington and West Lavington are very nice as well. Not sure about the schools there, someone else might know, it is a bit far from me but I have friends there and it is nice.

Beetroot · 26/02/2006 21:46

looking forward to it Gem

wheretogo · 27/02/2006 07:56

Thanks very much all for your suggestions. I shall be off on my adventure to check out these places tomorow morning.
Oh, anybody else know Cirencester? House prices are good so thought I might take a look

Enid, the name of the village came to me last night, Nether Compton! They used to live in Trent many years ago, wondered if you did know them? [nosey emoticon]

MissChief · 27/02/2006 10:02

cirencester is gorgeous! Depends what you're after but good range of period property, quite good schools, nice centre, family-friendly..

PeachyClair · 27/02/2006 11:31

FLoss, I know what you mean about places that size: oje of the main reasons we left the village we lived in, apart from the scary committee ladies.

FIL and Fiancee seem to like it there but I think they spend most of their time in Ilminster float building anyhow. I thought it looked nice, but thinking back that was at 1am!

Floss, you know that bit better then me. When / if we go back, we were considering South Petherton. I've only been to the village for the Carnival (surprise Wink), but it looked ok. it's near a lot of our friends, who are based there / Ilminster / Ilton and also chard but MIL would write that off even if the place was nicer. Do you know anything about the palce?

cod · 27/02/2006 11:32
