Help needed .... to find a girl's name I like!!!!!

Hello everyone ......
I need help .... with 10 weeks to go in this pregnancy I am beginning to think of names for our baby ... and am stuck!!!!
DH and I are pretty much at one with a boy's name that we both like (managed to dissuade DH from Bert and Frank ) so there is no problem there but when it comes to a girl's name we are in serious trouble and if we have a girl I can just see that she won't have a name for months ... bit like Edward and Sophie!!!

What I am after is some suggestions .... I hate baby naming books ... I get to C and fall asleep ... I never get past F!

We are looking for a name that goes with DS's name ... but I really don't want to post DS's name here so that is not really helpful ... sorry
Suffice it to say that his name is a very traditional English name (can think of a few kings that were named this ... not Henry, James or William) .... so I am after a traditional English girl's name ... that isn't too poncy or posh ... something pretty. My favourite girl's name is Rose/Rosie but a very close friend of mine had a baby last month and called her that so DH doesn't think we can have that ....
So ... sorry for the rambling post .... let's have it girls .... I need loads of suggestions!!!
Any ideas for me to start working on .... ????????

Not keen on Erin - don't like those names that also sound like boys names (Aaron)
Haven't read all the suggestions, so these may be doubles......
Martha
Madeline
Matilda
Maude

and Bronwyn (my fave!)
lots of others, but seem to be stuck on the mmmmms

I am with Custardo on this. DS is 8 wks tomorrow and not exactly pretty. Definitely a boy!! So I guess Max was a good name. Everyone on street/bus/shopping says 'is it a boy?' Thank christ he wasn't a girl. I would be knocking everyone out

wiltshire · 21/11/2003 03:51

He is very handsome though!!!

I was at school with 2 girls called Lita, havn't heard of anybody since (weird coincidence) but quite like it. My MIL is called Nita which is also slighlty unusual but nice.
I was also at school with a girl called Persephone which I think you have to be pretty strong to carry off.

Custy .... There is NO chance my baby will be ugly ... what are you incinerating???? Hmmmph! But I do so understand what you mean ... like, what if I called her Scarlett after Scarlett O'Hara and she ended up being a roly poly with a squint and lisp??? It wouldn't be fair would it?
Love the name Erin ... but that is the name of my cousin's daughter ...
And there is a very slight problem with names with the sound 'e' ... due to the NZ accent (no offence Slug and Florenceuk and any other real kiwis ) ... for example I love the name Beth but she would be called 'Bith' ...
I have to say I have only just started to control my cringing when someone who has a really strong accent talks to DS and says his name.
Katherine ... DS was going to be Eliza had he been a girl ...

... And ... off topic ... for CD... Perdita was the name of the mummy dog in the Disney film 101 Dalmatians ... In the original story by Dodie Smith (by far superior to the film IMO) the mummy dog was called Missus and Perdita (a brown spotted dalmatian) was another dog that came into the story right towards the end ...
Sorry but I hate the way Disney totally ruined a beautiful story .... I Love Disney films usually but hate some of them for that reason (101 Ds, Peter Pan .... )

Yesterdawhilst calling suppliers I came accros a lady called Beauty believe it or not. How embarrassing if she's an absolute troll!

On the truly odd names for children front, our local rag has one of those boony baby competitions at the moment (bleuch!) and this week's little moppet is called Arnica. DH thinks the mum might have been saying "our Nica" and been misunderstood, but I'm not convinced!

WSM · 21/11/2003 16:52

Perhaps her mum suffered bad bruising ?!

cas1968 · 23/11/2003 16:26

Tortington · 23/11/2003 21:03

do you like the name shireen

Queenie · 02/12/2003 16:44

I woke up today and suddenly liked the name Connie. Don't know why as I am not pregnant - didn't get much sleep so perhaps hallucinating? I also love Holly and would have called ds that had he been a dd. I have a dd called Sophie (so common now) and sometimes wish I had gone for a more regal Sophia.

CountessDracula · 02/12/2003 17:07

Nikki19 no I don't!

Not a big fan of Connie either. My dad calls his neighbour Connie Crinklecrotch and it reminds me of that (no idea why or where it came from)

I love the name Helena
My dd is Rose
also love Imogen,Mary,Hermione,Alice,Rea,Christian

Rian · 08/12/2003 00:08

definitely go with the name you like - it doesn't matter that your friend's chosen the same. Its far more important that you pick something you really like - after all you and your dd will be stuck with it for ever. Your friend will probably be flattered that you approve her taste. we had the same dilemma when my eldest dd was born- I realy liked Lily but we didn't go for it because my dp's best friend had just named his duaghter that. now I realise we didn't need to worry as although we're still very good friends we don't see them as a family that much & the children's paths hardly ever cross. However, we and Dd1 are very happy with the eventual choice!I did manage to sneak in lily as my dd2's second name tho.

nikki19 · 08/12/2003 00:23
