Help needed .... to find a girl's name I like!!!!!

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 08:53

Hello everyone ......
I need help .... with 10 weeks to go in this pregnancy I am beginning to think of names for our baby ... and am stuck!!!!
DH and I are pretty much at one with a boy's name that we both like (managed to dissuade DH from Bert and Frank ) so there is no problem there but when it comes to a girl's name we are in serious trouble and if we have a girl I can just see that she won't have a name for months ... bit like Edward and Sophie!!!

What I am after is some suggestions .... I hate baby naming books ... I get to C and fall asleep ... I never get past F!

We are looking for a name that goes with DS's name ... but I really don't want to post DS's name here so that is not really helpful ... sorry
Suffice it to say that his name is a very traditional English name (can think of a few kings that were named this ... not Henry, James or William) .... so I am after a traditional English girl's name ... that isn't too poncy or posh ... something pretty. My favourite girl's name is Rose/Rosie but a very close friend of mine had a baby last month and called her that so DH doesn't think we can have that ....
So ... sorry for the rambling post .... let's have it girls .... I need loads of suggestions!!!
Any ideas for me to start working on .... ????????

Katie, rebecca, sophie, hannah, jessica, charlie these were all my choices for girls,i eventually had a Katie Rebecca.

WideWebWitch · 18/11/2003 11:14

Rosa? Lily? Iris? Ruby? Laura? Mathilda? Madeline? I like most of those but can't have them for various reasons. Ikwym Ghosty, we can't think of any either. I have a ds with an Indian name (also don't want to post it here) so it has to go with that and not be too popular for me to like it. We're thinking maybe Dora atm or Dolores but prob won't go for the latter.

Rachel -- there's another nice, conventional name that's gone completely out of fashion. I can't remember the last time I heard any babies with these names, either: Samantha, Raquel, Karen, Alice, Colette, Denise, Gina, Tina, Claire, Patricia, Suzanne, Melissa, Deborah, Michelle.

I like Camilla (milly), Madeline, Celine, Nicole, Emily, Ameila, Eve, Scarlett.

A friend of a friend has just called her little girl Faith. Not one I'd have thought of but I like it.

zebra · 18/11/2003 11:25

Do you know what, Twiglett -- I have an Isabel and I feel embarrassed it's so conventional. named after DH's gran, and we have the only girl (7 boys) on his side of the family.

Ghosty: I found the NZ list of top girl names for you! I gloat to note that Most of my suggestions are not on it!

zebra · 18/11/2003 11:30

ps: I really wish we had called DD 'Faith' -- it woudl suit her better.

Ok, ok, I'll go get a life & stop posting on MN for today!

Try this from the bounty website. It tells you how many babies have been given a name in the UK since 2000.
It's also good fun competing to find the worst named babies, there's 8 Beyonce's, 6 elvis (!!) and a Buffy. (Apologies if any of these are your children!)

bluecow · 18/11/2003 11:40

Lily, Molly, Tilly and Olivia.

Angeliz · 18/11/2003 13:10

i love thee name Maggie too,

naughtynoonoo · 18/11/2003 13:11

Hi Ghosty

I am expecting in 12 weeks and have the same dilema - but we are having a boy - which is sooo hard. I said to dh if it was a girl I would have called her Twinkle! I do like traditional names. I see you mentioned Grace - that is a gorgeous name and makes me think of Grace Kelly - also was gorgeous, or even Katherine after me - I have been called Kate, Katie, Kathy & Katherine.

motherinferior · 18/11/2003 13:12

Neither of mine either, but since they have Jewish names (er...why? Neither parent Jewish) that's hardly surprising.

I love BK's list. What about Melissa?

Actually, Ghosty, I think Alice and Rosie are lovely. Stick with them!

M2T · 18/11/2003 13:20

Oh yes, Alice! Forgot about that one. I think it's lovely though DH doesn't like it that much. Hmph!

Angeliz · 18/11/2003 13:32

dead pleased you like Alice.my boys favourites are Tristen( but no-one in my family likes it or Elliot!

Angeliz · 18/11/2003 13:33

i do get all the lovely old biddies in shops saying "what a lovely name" too

lilibet · 18/11/2003 13:37

My daughter is Elizabeth Grace, other names that I like are Jennifer, Frances, Imogen, Isabel, Alice, Kathryn, Heather, Stella, Rosalind, Ruth, Naomi, Martha, Rose,
My cats are Harriet and Jemima, both names that I really like as well!!
My youngest would have been called Emily Faith if he had been a girl.

Elizabeth is a Jewish name!!

bobsmum · 18/11/2003 13:38

Rosamund or Juliet? Very Shakespearean!

donnie · 18/11/2003 13:55

hey zebra, my dd is called Melissa !! it is actually derived from the Greek word for honey bee. And she is such a sweetie....

lucy123 · 18/11/2003 14:03

Ghosty, I vote for Alice.

My current fave girls' names are Emily (think it's the top name tho) , Amelia, Alicia and Aliya (however you spell it).

Www - Dora is sweet. I can't bear the name Dolores, but the short form (in Spanish) is Lola. If that helps. I'm surprised you haven't got hundreds of actual Indian girls' names though, there are so many lovely ones. Not ones that i can spell or remember, but lovely ones. In fact Aliya is Arabic, I think (and therefore used in India. sometimes).
