Help needed .... to find a girl's name I like!!!!!

Hello everyone ......
I need help .... with 10 weeks to go in this pregnancy I am beginning to think of names for our baby ... and am stuck!!!!
DH and I are pretty much at one with a boy's name that we both like (managed to dissuade DH from Bert and Frank ) so there is no problem there but when it comes to a girl's name we are in serious trouble and if we have a girl I can just see that she won't have a name for months ... bit like Edward and Sophie!!!

What I am after is some suggestions .... I hate baby naming books ... I get to C and fall asleep ... I never get past F!

We are looking for a name that goes with DS's name ... but I really don't want to post DS's name here so that is not really helpful ... sorry
Suffice it to say that his name is a very traditional English name (can think of a few kings that were named this ... not Henry, James or William) .... so I am after a traditional English girl's name ... that isn't too poncy or posh ... something pretty. My favourite girl's name is Rose/Rosie but a very close friend of mine had a baby last month and called her that so DH doesn't think we can have that ....
So ... sorry for the rambling post .... let's have it girls .... I need loads of suggestions!!!
Any ideas for me to start working on .... ????????

A friend of mine has just called her daughter Ava, which is nice - short, anyway. Try the bible - always good for traditional names. Also think of relatives - we wanted to call DD2 Abigail, but her godmother is Israeli and it's pronounced "Avigoil" (yuk!) there. Cassia (K'tzia) also got vetoed for the same reason. We finally went through the name book the day before she was registered and stopped at "O" with something we could both live with.

Ghosty, I'm a weird name spotter - its my hobby, lol, I collect weird names - y'know the ones which make u cringe, i love the idea of naming ur child after a supermarket,

wiltshire · 18/11/2003 23:40

When I found out I was pregnant my mates wanted me to call baby Absolut - cos' I drank tons of it

They still call poor little ds 'abby' sometimes.

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 23:51

Anais ... Lol ... you would love Bob Geldof's kids' names then??

I've been talking to a friend this evening. She teaches 5yo's and has girls named Armani, Rochelle and Jersey (surname name 'White' LOL!) in her class. All this, in sober Aberdeen....

I only had one naem for Ds if he was a DD ella which apparantly means 'beautiful fairy princes in pagan'. I would stil have it but friends hacve called their cat Ella. Poppy was another favourite but votoeD on account of DH's dodgy past but the name for next DD (if it ever happens) is secret.

MUM2ELA · 19/11/2003 08:28

Ela (obviously)
Lola
Milly
Lily
Mali (sp)
Seren
Dashe (sp)
Masie
Sadie

If I have a girl next time I am definitely having Milly and I don't care that my surname starts with an M!

WideWebWitch · 19/11/2003 08:34

I love Ava but Dp hates it. Otherwise this one would be Ava I think. Glam, short and not too popular.

bossykate · 19/11/2003 09:40

ooh, getting more popular www, i've heard of quite a few avas recently...

WSM · 19/11/2003 09:46

The book we were reading when we looked up our DD's name, Ella, gave the meaning as being 'Gift of the Elf' !!

codswallop · 19/11/2003 09:46

met a little girl in ra - ridden salcombe once called Lettice

poor poor girl

IME the name has to pass the Tesco test - can you shout it dewn the cereal aisle without feeling like a twat?

WSM · 19/11/2003 10:00

ROFL !!!

CnR · 19/11/2003 10:03

Just had quick look at class registers I have for today, all secondary school age children. Today we have:

Billie, Summer, Charlene, Heather, Michelle, Natalie, Sarah, Charlotte, Laura, Caralee, Karla, Kelly, Rachael, Kristy, Lauren, Marhia, Samantha, Rebecca, Jessica, Emma, Kara, Cheryl, Donna, Katie

marialuisa · 19/11/2003 10:04

Lettice is actually the traditional English version of Laetitia. Cornish names can be unusual i was at school with 3 sisters called Loveday, Carenza and Demelza (surname Trevelyan). Don't like Demelza at all, presumably because that sister was mean...

I can think of loads of names I love but DD's name is one that would never have entered my head. Still not convinced I like it but it really suits DD, which is the main thing. Got my own way with the middle name (Elisabeth; Welsh/European spelling to reflect her roots!)

janh · 19/11/2003 10:31

marialuisa, I bet their mum read the Poldark books!

Jaybee · 19/11/2003 10:36

My SIL had a similar dilemma when she was expecting her fourth, she already had an Edward (Teddy), William (Will) and a George so was looking for something traditional to go with those. Her short list was:
Francesca
Elizabeth
Olivia
Charlotte
Florence
She ended up with a fourth boy!!

Jaybee · 19/11/2003 10:43

Also, if you really like Rosie could you not go for something like Rosanna, Rosaline, Rosemarie or similar - to be different from your friend - at least then you could still call her Rosie.

marialuisa · 19/11/2003 10:52

JanH, don't know about their mum's reading matter but their dad was a leading light in the cornish independence movement.

janh · 19/11/2003 11:05

marialuisa, I said that because I read once that Winston Graham invented Demelza as a girl's name - before he wrote the book it was just a place name. The other 2 were names all along of course and I'm not even sure if there was a Carenza in the books (there was a Loveday though - I think that is a beautiful name!)

mothernature · 19/11/2003 11:13

Try this

this

hope it helps

Norma · 19/11/2003 11:15

Lamorna is another Cornish name

CnR · 19/11/2003 11:22

Why not speak to your friend and explain; see what she thinks.

I have two cousins of roughly the same age, both have same name as both parents liked it. They agreed with each other not to worry about it and went ahead anyway.

aloha · 19/11/2003 11:32

I really like Mimi. It's my cat's name, but don't let that put you off!
