Help needed .... to find a girl's name I like!!!!!

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 08:53

Hello everyone ......
I need help .... with 10 weeks to go in this pregnancy I am beginning to think of names for our baby ... and am stuck!!!!
DH and I are pretty much at one with a boy's name that we both like (managed to dissuade DH from Bert and Frank ) so there is no problem there but when it comes to a girl's name we are in serious trouble and if we have a girl I can just see that she won't have a name for months ... bit like Edward and Sophie!!!

What I am after is some suggestions .... I hate baby naming books ... I get to C and fall asleep ... I never get past F!

We are looking for a name that goes with DS's name ... but I really don't want to post DS's name here so that is not really helpful ... sorry
Suffice it to say that his name is a very traditional English name (can think of a few kings that were named this ... not Henry, James or William) .... so I am after a traditional English girl's name ... that isn't too poncy or posh ... something pretty. My favourite girl's name is Rose/Rosie but a very close friend of mine had a baby last month and called her that so DH doesn't think we can have that ....
So ... sorry for the rambling post .... let's have it girls .... I need loads of suggestions!!!
Any ideas for me to start working on .... ????????

Copper, where on earth did you get those from?

www, sorry, I didn't think you wanted an Indian name as such but some of the ones in the Indian list are quite universal (IYSWIM).

popsycal · 18/11/2003 18:18

Lily - my fave
martha - dh's fave
rosie, rebecca,

popsycal · 18/11/2003 18:22

lily - my fave
martha - dh's fave
we have a ds tho

popsycal · 18/11/2003 18:22

ooops

Frenchgirl · 18/11/2003 18:46

Eloise??

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 18:48

Cor blimey ... you lot have been busy while I was sleeping

Your suggestions are all fantastic ....
My shortlist now ...
Rosie
Alice
Grace
Beth
Louisa (my grandmother was Louisa ... nick named Lou Lou)

I love Ella and Ellie ... but something is making me hesitate ... do you think Ellie would be nicknamed Nellie the Elephant if she happened to be a bit on the tubby side???

I like things like Molly and Poppy but I have friends with dds with those already ....

Katherine is also a favourite but DH's sister is called Kate and I know lots of other Kates ...

Isabel is also gorgeous .... I wanted that for DS if he was a girl but my dad ruined it by saying "Isabel necessary on a bike!"

Isn't it funny how association ruins names for you? I said Alice to DH yesterday and he suddenly shouted, "Alice, Alice, who the f**k is Alice?" ... didn't someone do some awful spoof of a song once??

Also being an ex teacher I think of a name and then think of a child that I have taught and think ... "Oh no ... definitely not!"

Eliza was also what DS was going to be and so when he was born and was a boy that name sort of disappeared on me ....

PS ... Don't want to post DS's name for the same reason as WWW ... anonymity ... but like I say there were 7 English kings ... and we have shortened it to a name that goes with Bear (NOT Pooh )

Thanks everyone ....

Hugs

Ghosty xxxx

PS ... WWW there are quite a few Indian names that don't sound too Indian though ... I am trying to think of some for you now ...

Ooh I'll have a look then Janh. Sorry, am being dozy atm, brain crammed as it is with fear of childbirth!

aloha · 18/11/2003 18:49

Copper, Damaris would be better if it wasn't also the name of a naughty knicker brand nowadays

WideWebWitch · 18/11/2003 18:51

Ghosty, isn't that "Alice, Alice, who the f* is Alice?" an Arlo Guthrie song? May have to go and look it up now...

WideWebWitch · 18/11/2003 19:06

Cor, I'm sad. The Arlo Guthrie song is Alice's Restaurant and the other one was Smokie, apparently. I remember it vaguely.

WSM · 18/11/2003 19:14

My DD is Ella Jean (middle name after DH's mum), but she also could've been Lily Jane (after both our grandmothers).

WSM · 18/11/2003 19:15

That horrible foul mouthed comedian covered it a few years ago, ummmmmmmmmmm, Chubby Brown. VILE

lucy123 · 18/11/2003 19:40

Ghosty - that was dp's objection to Alice too!

I wouldn't worry too much about possible nicknames - nasty kids can turn anything into something not very nice.

philippat · 18/11/2003 19:41

Wallace?

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 19:42

He he he phillipat

philippat · 18/11/2003 19:45

Actually Queen Philippa was one of said English king's wives, (I? III? who knows!)

CountessDracula · 18/11/2003 19:45

Ghosty I'm so pleased you like Louisa. My dad calls her Lou Lou, we call her Weezle or Louisa.

I really wanted Nell but dh had a dog called Nell when he was young so he didn't. Liked Nadya too.

Ghosty · 18/11/2003 19:59

I made a mistake didn't I Phillipat? ... there were 8 weren't there? And a descendant is in the news a bit at the mo ....
CD ... I really like Louisa ... DH isn't so sure but I can work on that
My mum is called Louise and she was called Weezle or Weezie as a little girl ... now she is Lou ...

janh · 18/11/2003 20:20

Ghlsty, there were 8 but if you blinked you missed the last one!

Tell you what, call her number one daughter until youmake your minds up.

The Alice song was by Smokie - "for 23 years I've been living next door to Alice" (????)

anais · 18/11/2003 20:39

Call me thick but I have no idea which king we are talking about - goes with bear? Can't think

Ghosty, my dd is a Rosie Grace

I'm trying to think of traditional names...

Eve, Rebecca, Charlotte, Emma, Joanna, Sarah, Imogen, Katherine/Katie, Laura...

fio2 · 18/11/2003 20:41

jan is that the one...... alice, alice who the f**k is alice?

janh · 18/11/2003 21:05

fio, that's the song but originally there wasn't a f* in it - it was copied by someone else! - not sure about 23 either - it was 20-something though...

fio2 · 18/11/2003 21:10

I know, I know - I was joking!

janh · 18/11/2003 21:24

Oops. Sorry, fio!

roscoe · 18/11/2003 21:40

Roy 'Chubby' Brown did the cover version.
