scrapping Sky subscription in the light of the UK press debacle

S'not really the same sort of sacrifice for us though. Even before you consider the issue of having a Mr Orange Face with Painted on Hair alternative. English speaking telly V Italian speaking telly.

I went for 14 years without telly, I don't want to go back.

So I'm settling for writing to all the companies who withdrew advertising to say, good for you, I will remember this and factor it in to my consumer choices.

BananaGio · 09/07/2011 07:46

you're right fastweb. the idea that my viewing options will be reduced to Emilio Fede and co and the fact that my one Italian must-see Annozero has been forced out by the Orange One means that dont think can get rid of Sky on reflection. What a choice though. Berlusca or Murdoch. Would be interested to see a comparison as to who controls most in UK and Italy respectively. Am guessing Berlusca still has the edge on the amount of control overall in Italy as opposed to Murdoch in the UK but boh! Would be interested to see. If it is the case then Britain-look south to Italy and weep at your future if the BskyB deal goes ahead!

Emilio Fede and co

at having to watch the pimpmeister et al.

And fucking veline draped over bad shows just to add insult to injury.

I understand the urge to boycott the entire group, but that is hard strategy to build up critical mass with, and even harder to maintain. Makes more sense to me to appeal to the self interest of the companies that react to "bad news". It is easy to persuade people to compliment and consume the products of deserting advertisers and to continue to do so on a regular, very noisey basis. Cos it costs nothing but time and is a positive action rather than a negative, self sacrificing one.

So instead of "I boycott Nestle", you get "I support and seek out the X company's product, cos they have PRINCIPLES !!!!" campaigns.

Has to be worth a try to see if positive enforcement that is effectively a mode of provoking economic sanctions for wrong doers has a greater impact than the up till now mainly negative enforcement via boycotts.

I say this not least cos I know enough people who publicly declare they boycott Nestle, but in fact consume the products privately. Although admittedly it is harder to hide the hacking great satellite dish on your house compared to the contents of your cupboards (=

I think trying to get people to boycott Sky is a hiding to nothing and a lost opportunity to try something a little fresher, that stands a better chance of working cos it appeals to people self interest (I still get my telly AND I get to consume other goods AND I can feel good about my purchase cos this lot withdrew advertising) and their desire to make a point.

Yo ragazze, I am now in Milan but only for a few days. I can't work out how to mumsnet from the new android mobile I got with a new fastweb (hello!) contract. Boh!
We don't have a telly, mainly because I loathe meadiaset and what rai has become in the last 10 yrs. I'd love to have a sky subscription though, as much as I loathe Murdoch, I do wish i could watch the odd replica of Location, location location or Grand design in English!

Rosa · 17/07/2011 14:27

I just hope that the saying what goes round comes around which means Murdoch, Berlusca etc all get what they have dished out and worse.....
last week now at beach nonna ( Uk) is here then we all go to the UK next week. Help ! Then it will be ferie finito as nonna has a operazione 1/8 and can't do anything for a month. Nonno is 80 and thank heavens doing ok and is active etc but with the 2 dds it will be interesting ....Catch up soon. For the record we have SKY and normal but I could do without normal no problem as never watch it . Here we have yoyo on and have seen the news oncee or twice...

Francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2011 22:46

Rosa, have a lovely time in the UK, what operation is your dm having? I hope all goest well, my dear. x

spaghettina · 23/07/2011 20:57

Hello..I guess everyone must be at the beach! Just wanted to check in and say ciao. I'm off to the south of Italy for about 6 weeks now, packing seems to have gone strangely smoothly (perhaps because it's not too hot in Milan today so my brain was functioning normally!) and let's hope the 10 hour drive with our car-phobic DD goes ok too....Will be staying with our in-laws the whole time except for a couple of brief nights away in the region, here's hoping I don't come back 10kg heavier from all the amazing food they'll be piling onto my plate...
Hope everyone has a good summer and that you're all sunning yourselves somewhere nice (or enjoying the coolness of the UK!)

giveitago · 27/07/2011 19:57

Ciao everyone

Just gearing up for 17 days with mil - fly in 5 days time. Actually looking forward to some good weather and I'm taking lots of books and my ipod. I'll be chilled (need down time as I work pretty much full time these days). Plus drelative coming for the first week and she won't hold back if she encounters the slightest thing she doesn't like. Will be hilarious.

DS speaking some Italian (praise be - and at long bloody last).

Enjoy your holidays

spaghettina · 29/07/2011 10:07

Good luck Giveitago, I've got cabin fever after just 5 days with in-laws but that's partly due to the fact we've been struck by a stomach bug and have hardly been out of the house :(
I hope your DS picks up lots of Italian!

giveitago · 31/07/2011 20:07

Oooh spag - hope you're all better soon.

I'm feeling a bit shit about the all the bloody preparation of going somewhere that's only bloody in europe - but that's dh - gotta go with it.
But dearcous will be a great divertion and she takes NO SHIT. It will be a hoot the first week and when she's gone I'll just get back in my box for the following 8 days and reads the books that dcous has left there with me.

No intention to participate as such - dh's family politics are already reaching fever pitch and I have no intention of joining in.

Sadly ds will no Italian as his family only speak dialect. But he'll the gist of other language (in the generic) which is good.

Have a great summer.

Rosa · 12/08/2011 14:07

Francagoestohollywood · 05/09/2011 11:35

Yo Gio!!!! We had lovely holidays. We've been to Formentera this year, with friends. The sea is amazing, we stayed in a lovely location, very child friendly. It is packed though, and full of tamarri Grin. What about you? How was tuscany?

BananaGio · 05/09/2011 12:16

yo franca!! holiday sounds fab. Never been to Formentera but always fancied it.Been to Menorca a few times and love it there. Tuscany was fab. Mare was lovely in the morn, bit less in the pm but still nice. Met up with friends from last 2 years and their kids so was fun.

Francagoestohollywood · 05/09/2011 12:38

Glad to hear you had a lovely time. We went to an agriturismo at the Parco dell'Uccellina for 5 days at the beginning of August and it was amazing, I love Tuscany!

I think Formentera must have been a paradise until 10 yrs ago, when mass tourism discovered it. It is still beautiful (and the beaches are incredibly child friendly), but I'd go at the beginning of June or late September, to avoid the crowds.

Rosa · 05/09/2011 13:44

jealous at Formentera sounds lovely . When we went to the Canaries in winter it sounded just too windy so we gave it a miss. Cavallino was my hols and it was lovely the dds had a ball. Then The Uk was good . weather was not great but it wasn't that foul either teh dds played lots in the garden we did a few days out and also beach , picking blackberries etc. Mum had her op 1/8 and was only really a week bed bound7house boound . She ha dto be careful for the other 3 weeks but I was glad to be there as Dad would not have coped.
went to the presentation of minirosas materna this am . Am now on the hunt for a plate set that fits into a box or similar as they no longer can return the crockery in a plastic bag ........

Francagoestohollywood · 05/09/2011 17:06

Ciao Rosa, happy to hear you had lovely holidays and that your mother's operation went well, thank goodness you were there to help!

Why do they want crockery from home? Never heard of this before! (and btw time flies, is minirosa really starting materna??? Smile)

Sputnik · 05/09/2011 22:15

I'm back too, we have been around, had a couple of weeks in the UK, weather was not great but tbh I'd take 16° in Wales over 37° in Rome any day.

DS's first day at school today, there are some pics on FB of him in his uniform. It seemed to go ok, he didn't cry or anything and seemed quite happy. Teacher said she wanted a word with me then disappeared, hopefully nothing serious!

Francagoestohollywood · 05/09/2011 22:44

Oh hello Sputnik, I've just seen the pics on fb, how adorable Smile And again I have to say: time flies...can't believe master sputnik is already at school!!! Glad to hear the first day went well.

Mine won't start until Monday, but they need to finish the bloody compiti delle vacanze first!

Sputnik · 06/09/2011 10:19

I can't believe it either!

Rosa · 06/09/2011 14:24

Phew for you Sput ...how were you though ? How is he in general is he still improving?
Crockery seems to be a normal thing in the schools here some don't have the mensa kitchen in the school but minirosas is attached to the elementare that does. DD1 doesn't have to bring anything apart from a bavalino.
I just wish that they brought in school uniform here ....would be cheaper and easier !
After the storm its a bit cooler now am so glad we missed the 40degree temps and humidity I honestly don't think I would have coped.
Think I need my eyes testing as am having to squint at the screen!

Sputnik · 06/09/2011 20:47

Well I felt a little wobbly walking out but on the whole I was thinking about my childfree day ahead! I am a bad mother.
DS has made huge progress with language and everything else, but he is still "different" for want of better word. But he learns quickly and I hope that'll pull him through, that and his charm and good looks ;-)
Re temperatures, I literally flipped when I got home and it was 38°, I couldn't handle it! Luckily it cooled down a bit the next day.

Sputnik · 06/09/2011 22:36

Forgot you can actually Wink on MN
I have been away too long.
