how overweight is she

ie which percenttile ???

although I hate liars tell her the shops have stopped selling them

and just give her alternatives

honestly she will not starve

WigWamBam · 02/10/2005 18:01

My dd gets tired too, but if she were to hit me for the wrong brand of Yorkie then she would still be disciplined. And of course I prefer some brands to others, but I don't have a tantrum if I get the wrong one. Sorry, but you are making a rod for your own back here.

tortoiseshell · 02/10/2005 18:01

Can you give her a small snack of cheese or something to take the edge of her hunger? I do know what it's like - ds has been the most hideous eater, but he is now improving, and to my shock requested an apple on Friday when he got home from school. So it really is worth persevering - I'm now convinced my ds' eating obstinacies are psychological, as he seems to decide to eat something and he does. But that is only just happening - if she's at school I would have thought she is old enough to understand what you're doing, and she's not going to develop healthy eating patterns if she knows she'll always get her favourite yorkshire pudding.

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:01

WWB, I tried leaving the crisp out of her lunchbox .... the apple still came back.

RTKangaMummy · 02/10/2005 18:02

why are you doing 4 meals

Tanzie · 02/10/2005 18:02

Give her a slice of wholemeal toast with marmite then.

tortoiseshell · 02/10/2005 18:02

Carla, that's what I mean - give her that meal once a week, not every day.

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:02

TS, that's it. She won't touch cheese, eggs, pasta. What child is like that????

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:03

Or toast, Tanzie.

WigWamBam · 02/10/2005 18:04

When the apple came back, what did you do? I suspect you went back to putting crisps in her lunchbox. You need to be consistent - if the apple comes back, give her a pear the following day - don't let her emotionally blackmail you into giving her the crisps again.

tortoiseshell · 02/10/2005 18:07

As an example, a year ago my ds wouldn't eat any meat, fish, fruit, yoghurt, pizza, potato, egg, any type of pasta sauce - he was literally living on plain pasta with cheese and peas. He won't even eat ham. But he really is improving - on Friday he had school dinner which I believe was salmon fishcakes. And 2 apples. But I do think that constantly offering the good food has helped, plus he doesn't have unhealthy snacks very often - has crisps very occasionally (once a month?), no chocolate or sweets, and occasional plain biscuits. So he isn't filling himself up on junk, which gives him an incentive to eat what's there. If he was constantly full on his favourite foods, why would he ever try something new? And although he is very thin, I do want him to have good eating patterns, because it's a pattern for life isn't it.

RTKangaMummy · 02/10/2005 18:07

you said earlier she ate yorkies bacon and fruit

Whast friut is it she eats

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:09

WWB, she always has both - I've tried varying the fruit, but it always comes back. It just feels so cruel to leave out her favourite food.

I am going to shame myself:

5 mini carrots (untouched
6 strawberries (untouched)
Hula hoops - eaten
4 mini Jammie Dodgers - eaten
Snack size Crunchie - eaten
Apple - untouched
Baguette with butter in - sometimes half eaten, sometimes untouched
2 Devonshire toffees, one of which she gives to her friend
2X Petit Filous - sometimes eaten, sometimes untouched.

Any ideas?

RTKangaMummy · 02/10/2005 18:12

So what fruit does she eat then cos you said earlier she ate fruit????

Why do you cook 4 meals in evenig

tortoiseshell · 02/10/2005 18:12

Ok, leave one petit filous, take out the crisps, open the packet of jammie dodgers, put 2 in a little pot, leave out the chocolate - it won't give her any energy for the day, just a sugar boost, leave in fresh fruit and veg - maybe with a dip of some sort? Have you tried cereal bars? Or those dried fruit bars you can get fromhealth food shops - ds loves the apricot ones, and I think they're just fruit. You need to add some protein - either ham or cheese, although the yoghurt is protein I guess. Would she like baby bels? Does she have a fruit juice drink?

RTKangaMummy · 02/10/2005 18:13

So don't give her the choc or crisps and if they are not there she won't be able to eat them

does your school do school dinners ?

Octobernow · 02/10/2005 18:13

At the dds' school parents are not allowed to put crisps/nuts or sweets/biscuits in the lunchboxes. In your example, I'd leave out the jammie dodgers, hula hoops, crunchie and toffees for a while and find something to put inside the sandwich. Houmus, marmite, cream cheese, pate, ham?

tortoiseshell · 02/10/2005 18:14

On the days he has packed lunch, ds has a sandwich - either cheese or marmite, which he usually leaves untouched or nibbled, a 'nutrigrain' apple bar, a carton of orange juice and a pot with some dried fruit, and one biscuit. He gets fresh fruit at school anyway. And he doesn't eat much of it, but he knows that that's what there is.

WigWamBam · 02/10/2005 18:14

It's not cruel to leave out her favourite food. She can still have them - just not every day.

Most children, given the choice, would fill up on Jammie Dodgers, Crunchie and Hula Hoops first - if you don't give her the choice, then if she's hungry she will eat the good stuff.

I would try leaving in the bread roll, carrots, strawberries and apple, leaving out the toffees completely, and giving EITHER the Hula Hoops, the Jammie Dodgers or the Crunchie - not all three. She's filling herself up on the rubbish rather than eating the good stuff, so cut down on the rubbish. Try introducing things like cherry tomatoes or chunks of melon or pineapple as well.

I know you're trying to be nice to her but it's causing her problems.

RTKangaMummy · 02/10/2005 18:15

so her diet is

Hula hoops - eaten
4 mini Jammie Dodgers - eaten
Snack size Crunchie - eaten

Baguette with butter in - sometimes half eaten, sometimes untouched
2 Devonshire toffees, one of which she gives to her friend
2X Petit Filous - sometimes eaten, sometimes untouched.

yorkies and bacon

what for brekkie???

Will get link for packed lunch ideas

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:17

But that's the problem. She just won't even try anything new.

RTKangaMummy · 02/10/2005 18:18

but if there is no alternative she will

do they do school lunches

ask about a week trial

peer pressure will mean she eats it

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:18

RT, Honey Nut Cherios , Rice Crispies or Weetabix.

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:19

All her best chums have packed lunches. They sit on a different table. I'll have her taking me to court if I suggest school lunches for a week. And she'd miss all her usual friends.

hallowcarla · 02/10/2005 18:21

And strawberries, RTKM. At least she has those.
