Does your house have a name rather than a number? What can I call my new house?

We are moving next month to a brand new house and we want to give it a name as its on a small 'court' where two of the other 5 houses already have names.

Does your house have a name and if it does, how did you arrive at that name?

I've been trying to think of a name which includes DD's and DS's names, but they are both short names and I can't come up with antthing DH likes!

Ours is called Westbay - it's always had that name, it's an old house.

katymac · 13/09/2005 16:21

I named our Walnut Corner (but that was a business decision)

Didn't I read something very recently that said if you want to "name" your house you have to pay to do so? Have no idea how much but I definitely read this somewhere- and VERY recently.

The name is parts of our childrens names, not ours. Unless they decide to divorce me in the future . . .

Yes you have to apply for Planning Permission and it costs about £30 (in our area)

Fio2 · 13/09/2005 16:40

someone by us called their urzanmine and they ended up getting divorced

jampots · 13/09/2005 16:40

My sister built hers and called it Twin Oaks because strangely she had 2 oak trees in the front garden

expatinscotland · 13/09/2005 16:40

I thought it was only called a name if it didn't have a number addres. I'm confused. One of my good friends has a house out in the country that has a name but no number.

Skate · 13/09/2005 16:42

Ours has a number too but the house has had the name since it built - not sure when, early 1900's I think.

Scatterbrain · 13/09/2005 16:42

I think you can just use a name if you keep the number too - but according to Jilly Cooper in "Class" that's terribly vulgar !

If you want not to use the number anymore - but replace it with a name that's where the planning permission - (?) really (?????) comes in - actually I thought you just had to notify or ask the post office for permission !

starlover · 13/09/2005 16:42

don't like tulula personally... sounds a bit "frilly" for a house

Mum2Ela · 13/09/2005 16:43

Starlover, i'm not fussed either and DH thought it sounded a bit 'gay' (?) for a house. Wantedto include the childrens names in it to and thats the best of a bad bunch!

OP posts:
starlover · 13/09/2005 16:52

what's your surname? if you don't mind posting...

SoupDragon · 13/09/2005 16:55

I'm afraid that names made up of names (iyswim!) make me think of Casa Bevron from Brookside...

DaddyCool · 13/09/2005 17:34

how bout simply... 'the manor'

Enid · 13/09/2005 17:35

ours is called Lane Cottage after the lane its on

imaginative I know

Enid · 13/09/2005 17:36

hmm

does it have a number already

if so I think very naff to have

Tulula
12, Kenton Court etc

just keep the number

QueenOfQuotes · 13/09/2005 17:36

NOOOO - don't do it. It will make it incredbily difficult for people to find your house (both to visit and to deliver stuff). Or if you do - get a number as well!
