Does your house have a name rather than a number? What can I call my new house?

We are moving next month to a brand new house and we want to give it a name as its on a small 'court' where two of the other 5 houses already have names.

Does your house have a name and if it does, how did you arrive at that name?

I've been trying to think of a name which includes DD's and DS's names, but they are both short names and I can't come up with antthing DH likes!

Ours is named 'Kismet' (fate). Has had the name since it was built in 1920's. We did put it on our change of address cards when we first moved in but now don't bother!!!!

Ours has had a name for as long as I know, Ivy Cottage. It has a number too, but I prefer the name Such a snob I know

motherinferior · 13/09/2005 21:26

Mavis would be a good name for a house, I reckon.

helsi · 13/09/2005 21:28

My mums previous house was called The Coach House - guess why?

dinny · 13/09/2005 21:30

ha, Soupdragon - had forgotten Casa Bevron! pmsl. house names really do make me laugh (sorry!) unless it's the original name of period property, that is.

Prufrock · 13/09/2005 21:55

Ours is called Orchard House - doesn't have a number as it was tagged onto the beginning of astreet - so would have to have been No. 0. But the builder had originally called it house, and the previous owners had changed it themselves- a fact I most definately was not aware of when I said to them "Bit of an exaggeration, calling it Orchard House when there's only one apple tree in the garden"

Passionflower · 13/09/2005 22:21

Ours (victorian 1840's) has always had both, we don't bother with the name though. It's called La Campinella. Personally agree with Sopudragon, s' a bit naff to give houses names.

Cam · 13/09/2005 22:26

PSML at rather a 'gay' name - your house must be a boy house then?!

How about Ronald?

Rowlers · 13/09/2005 22:26

Think names are daft, personally.
Either they state the obvious, so why bother? Or they are made up names like Kevbev, just daft. Ok, not Kevbev but you know what I mean.
No offence, like.

Rowlers · 13/09/2005 22:31

Soz, have I killed it?

Skribble · 13/09/2005 22:34

What about Dunbreeding

Carmenere · 13/09/2005 22:44

I think names are usually only appropriate when the house is in the countryside. My parents built a house beside a little harbour in Ireland and named it Cois Cuan which means beside the harbour in Irish. But they named it because they needed to identify the house for postal reasons, otherwise I'm afraid I have to agree with Enid- a bit naff

In cambridge I lived for a while in a house called Albert House and when I got my cat it was of course called.

Albert Cat

Slight thread hijack, does anyone know how you would find out if your house had a name when it was built? I live in a victorian semi, group of four similar houses and two of the houses have names and ours and next door don't. Curious to know if it had a name at some point.

Rowlers · 13/09/2005 22:50

Look on the deeds?

MrsSpoon · 13/09/2005 23:01

Deeds with our Bank, don't remember seeing a name at the time of the legalities, probably means it has never had one.

Have often thought about naming the house (probably because two of the neighbouring houses have names).

FWIW, I'm not sure about Tulula either and would agree it sounds a bit fluffy for a house.

Mytwopenceworth · 13/09/2005 23:01

My place is called Lime Cottage. Always been Lime Cottage, as far as I know. It doesn't even have a number. But it does suit it cos its a really sweet natural stone thing, a proper country cottage (ie in the middle of nowhere with sheep for neighbours!)

I do think people who name their terraced town house are a bit naff too! A name simply doesn't work so well on a house in the middle of a huge city estate.

1, 3, 5, 7, 9, Clematis Lodge, 13, 15, 17, 19 ...........

stitch · 13/09/2005 23:04

our house has a name above the garage doors. but not on any legal documents.
we have left it up as its too much hassle to remove the plaque, and it looks nice. that is nice letters and stuff.
never ever use it though. unless was a huge estatewouldnt use a house name.

SecondhandRose · 13/09/2005 23:26

Two houses I knew of called Brenbry owned by Brenda and Bryand and Trevick owned by guess who?

SecondhandRose · 13/09/2005 23:27

What about Agin?

Mytwopenceworth · 13/09/2005 23:28

Trevor and Victor?

SecondhandRose · 13/09/2005 23:31

No, they weren't gay - Trevor and Vicky!

Mytwopenceworth · 13/09/2005 23:35

Its kind of similar to the Wayne and Sharon sticker you got across the top of the windscreens of beat up old cars!!

Bet nobody knows what I'm on about!!!

handlemecarefully · 13/09/2005 23:41

Ours is called 'Hidden Pond' because it has a 'hidden pond'. We didn't name it, but I like it all the same.
