Does your house have a name rather than a number? What can I call my new house?

We are moving next month to a brand new house and we want to give it a name as its on a small 'court' where two of the other 5 houses already have names.

Does your house have a name and if it does, how did you arrive at that name?

I've been trying to think of a name which includes DD's and DS's names, but they are both short names and I can't come up with antthing DH likes!

Our house used to be called Tulip House, the previous owners changed it to the current name. I would have too, it sounds a bit silly, imho. Really not keen on made up house names using residents names. I too have visions of Casa Bevron( one of the best things about Brookie, imho!)

According to the authorities on this thread , we escape being naff because we are in the country and we don't have a house number as well as a name

handlemecarefully · 13/09/2005 23:43

...oh and we are landed gentry of course

handlemecarefully · 13/09/2005 23:44

joking!!!!!

soapbox · 13/09/2005 23:51

I don't have a number just a name

But its a PITA as no one can ever find our house and end up driving up and down the road because the house is in a conservation area and you can only put a name sign up with quite small letters on it[stupid]

Ask Kbear how long it took to find it!!!!

yawningmonster · 14/09/2005 02:56

Our family home is named Morere which means something similar to "moving about like the stars" It is a Maori name but Im not sure who named it or why. It is on the waterfront so it could be a reference to the sea breezes buffeting the house.

Steppy1 · 14/09/2005 05:28

we just have a name and then our village name...and the post always gets to us (only about 30 houses in the Village though) in a previous life I let my husband name our house and he called if "Michel Delving" after a place in Lord of the Rings (beofre it was popular !!!!) he carved the name in a block of wood IN RUNES (blush) so nobody could read it....somebody hit my car and when we were exchanging details they thought I was "Michelle Devlin" the name of the house, oh how I PMSL

used to live in a house with a name (country place, we didn't name it and no numbers in the village). It was confusing as there were similar sounding ones nearby. If you do use a name one that sounds good goes down well. One village house was called high views - that encourages people to view it when you are selling Another was called sunnyside. When we moved here our house had a name but it fell down and we only use the number. When we wanted the phone reconnected BT thought it needed a new line as they only had the name, not the number.

Another Orchard House here, common as muck!
Used to live in a Common Lane house, Common Lane..!
I think house names are best in the country where roads are often unnamed.

Numbers are for towns.. its a welly thing

geekgrrl · 14/09/2005 07:38

ours is called 'riverside' because well... that's where it is.

it used to be called 'river name bank house' but that caused no end of problems as only the locals would know how the river name was spelled, so we renamed it shortly after moving in.

Go for something easy, you don't want to have to spell it out for everyone.

My house has always had its name since being built in the 17th C as a farmhouse, it is off- road.

However the Post Office decided it had to have a number a few decades ago and gave it an arbitrary number with the road name being the nearest road (even though we are not on that road!)

So we use the name and number and road, none of which ever help anyone to find it, which is just the way I like it.

SherlockLGJ · 14/09/2005 08:04

I pass one every morning, called Red Marley.

WTF, why would you call your house after a brick.

triceratops · 14/09/2005 08:17

Our house was straystones when it was built in the 1970s and then changed to Oriana in the 1980s (very tacky IMO) and we have changed it to No 1.

We used to live at East End Farm and before that I lived at Bentholm Farm. They were both farms surprisingly enough.

If you would like to name it give it a happy name that is easy to spell like sunnyside. ds suggests the bat cave, but he is 3.

triceratops · 14/09/2005 08:18

dh childhood house was called Briaden after the brothers Brian and Denis. The new owners changed the name surprisingly enough.

Old houses were named to help people find them which is totally unnecessary and naff in a new house with roads etc as they are now.Opposite our old flat was a bungalow called Thisledo!!!

Furball · 14/09/2005 08:30

SherlockLGJ - There is a place near us called Redmarley, maybe they have some connection with that?

SherlockLGJ · 14/09/2005 08:33

Goodpoint Furball, I have only ever associated it with a type of house brick.

Cam · 14/09/2005 08:46

LOL Hausfrau

Reminds me of a letter in the paper where someone's address was 8b Union Road and always got mail for 8 Bunion Road

NotActuallyAMum · 14/09/2005 09:03

Buggram Hall

Norfolker Inn

Sorry I know this doesn't help but I saw these on plaques for sale in a shop recently and just thought I'd share it with you all

serah · 14/09/2005 09:23

Our house was called "Peace Haven". The day we moved in, I brushed against it and it fell off.

Hmmmm.

bundle · 14/09/2005 11:05

I'd like to live in a house called Clive, but can see the value in kitsch Dumroamin' et al

Mum2Ela · 14/09/2005 15:36

Only just got back to this. Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

Ok, so do I get over the 'naff' thing as I don't think this house will have a number? There will be 6 houses sharing a gated entrance, at the end of a lane. Two of these houses are already named (one was where Shirley Bassey lived ), no number, and this isn't a development on an estate or anything (not knocking estates, live on one atm).

My parents have lived in a 'named' house for 16 years and very occasionallky have a probem with missing post but not often., and poeple not being able to find the house is more due to its location rather than can't find the name of the house iyswim, so not worried about that.

Ok, back to the name. Tulula not an option now. Was joking anyway (ok, half joking ;). There are 2 old willow tress in the garden which will remain. So . .

The Willows? (v common?)
Twin-Willows? (Does that make sense?)

Any other ideas?

There is also a monkey puzzle tree opposite, if thats any help.
