The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

Jacksmama · 21/03/2009 00:18

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

mistlethrush · 28/03/2009 15:16

It was, but I'm not sure what the NMBs have been doing to it. Prehaps is closer to one of the 'modern' music 'prepared' pianos by now?

Donk · 28/03/2009 15:45

MBDTK - I can waffle on for ages about hay!
A think that chocolate covered meadow hay sounds about right - nice and soft and sweet, with a herby bouquet!

The lucerne hay can be saved for a special treat later.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 28/03/2009 18:24

Oooh. Are we expecting James May? Do you think he's really as nice as he appears on the telly?

More tea/hay/cake, anyone?

amber32002 · 29/03/2009 08:04

I think he is a nice person, just very pedantic.

Tea and croissants now magically appeared here for those that fancy such a thing.

UniS · 29/03/2009 12:32

ohh go on then, tea and pastry based breakfast products always welcome.

MT- no problem about sandals.. these things happen. Esp when small boys bedrooms are involved.

Its agoerous day here, washing on teh line, I'm aboutto pop another load on. I can spy out of teh tea room window thatteh bishops are taking advantage of teh fine weather too, their washing line is festooned with stoles and robes, and I think even a mitre may be pegged out to dry.

HAve you spotted teh teeny tiny little washing line over on teh window box... I think teh NNBs are getting into spirit of teh day and have hung their tenny tiny gold spandex shorts out to dry.

daisy99divine · 29/03/2009 15:11

hello! love the hat, Tea, and good news about cars. We have a Subaru which is great. Dirty and closer to the twine holding bumper stage, but goes well. Thirsty though.

I always thought James May was a bit of a plinker happy to be corrected

Yes, those NMBs are looking sweet aren't they? All naked and blowing bubbles from clay pipes like that Pears Soap ad! Amazing they can hand wash with long nails - never managed it myself (either!)

Here we go. I'm off to play the piano. In the tea room I am sure I shall get the notes right

I am surprisingly excited to hear if it was lambs/ chick or lemurs that won!

Jacksmama · 29/03/2009 15:42

It's been very quiet in the tea room, hasn't it?

I have an [ignorant foreigner] question for anyone who hangs out on the U.S. threads - when you refer to a car as a "something something estate" in the U.K., is that what we would call a "station wagon" in North America? It would be like a car in the front, maybe a bit bigger, but with an extra long and bigger trunk/boot/loading area in the back. Not like an SUV which is mostly just taller and bigger.

And... who are James May and Jeremy Whatshisname?

So.... what did everyone do for Earth Hour last night?

OP posts:
daisy99divine · 29/03/2009 16:01

Yes, estate car is station wagon

Except for the very posh When it is a vehicle into which they can insert their country houses

Jeremy and James? Well, it is for other petrolheads to explain. A long running boring car programme hosted by total twats lovely car enthusiasts....

Earth Hour? I was getting giddy in the bar at my Work Conference....you?

drat those NMBs

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 29/03/2009 16:22

Jacksmama - Jeremy and James are two of the hosts of Top Gear, a motoring programme which was originally aired on the BBC and is now on permanent repeat (on a loop, it seems) on a digital channel. In many ways the programme is reprehensible because it perpetuates the idea that cars are good and fast, expensive cars are better and that public transport is for losers. So far, so eco-unfriendly. But, MadBadBaby was introduced to the programme by her cousins and will watch it endlessly (which, as I said, is possible thanks to digital TV) and I now have a guilty affection for it. They recently described our car as 'hateful' - too dull, too 'family' - but there is something quite engaging about their enthusiasm for their subject. At this very moment, I am watching James and Jeremy drive a 1903 de Dion Bouton around the English countryside. Other recent stunts include making their own police cars from scrapyard cars and gloss paint. So they're still reprehensible but endearing in an overgrown Boy Scout kind of way.

Jacksmama · 29/03/2009 16:26

Ah.
Thanks.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 29/03/2009 16:29

Earth Hour, Daisy? We were in a theatre, so a couple of hundred people sharing one set of lights must be defensible, I think.

Tea and chocolate cake, anyone?

Jacksmama · 29/03/2009 16:37

I'd love some tea. Are any croissants still about?

OP posts:
daisy99divine · 29/03/2009 16:56

you want croissants?

Did I bake those cakes just for me then????

Jacksmama · 29/03/2009 17:04

There seems to be an epidemic of tea room door slamming.

Damage control is in order, I think.

OP posts:
daisy99divine · 29/03/2009 17:31

Hi there JM! Did you find a croissant? Do you want some tea?

Jacksmama · 29/03/2009 17:41

Budge up there sweetheart, there should be room for both of us on the swing seat.
I'd love some tea and a croissant, thank you!

Wine? How marvellous MadBad!

JM and I are just sitting on the swingseat in the fading sun. I think we need rose - whaddya say?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 29/03/2009 18:57

Yes, daisy, I'd taken advantage of your being on the swing seat to scoff all the a modicum of chocolate cake.

I love rose. Have just been reading in the newspaper about the travails of the rose makers of Anjou.

Et voila! On this rose-painted tin tray I have glasses of Rose d'Anjou and several antique china bowls, filled with twiglets, olives, cheese straws and cracked black pepper crisps. How long do you think we can sit on the veranda, before it gets too cold?

RacingsnakeLovesHerNewCar · 29/03/2009 19:09

Great, I love rose, too, and now it's no longer the exclusive domain of old ladies. I also like sweet wine.

I rather like the Js, too, they are just like cartoon boys. So unbelievably boyish. Although Jeremy was quite unable to explain the function of most of my buttons, or why the car clock mostly shows the temperature. Or, indeed, why cars tell you the temperature at all. I thought that's what thermometers are for.

Could this develop further? Household machines usurping each others' functions. Fridges which give you the news headlines, radios which hoover, TVs which do the odd bit of ironing. Clocks that make tea ... Oh, yes, it has all happened. Just look in the average junk mail catalogue.

CMOTdibbler · 29/03/2009 20:15

Is there some rose left ?

I have found this lovely down filled comforter and some stone hot water bottles to extend the verandah time.

Lambs won - which may have been a bad choice as the farm park is right at the top of a hill, and the wind was bitter. Much running round, guinea pig cuddling, examination of the egg incubator and hatching chicks. Bottle feeding the lamb and the tractor ride were the highlights. But we didn't stay past lunch and then made tracks for the hotel and cream tea. Lovely room, huuuge bathroom (into which we put the cot). Dinner was very mediocre, evil SIL was in full flow, and nephew 1 (16) got absolutely blotto. FIL was just getting to be argumentative when removed by MIL.

I poured myself into red bodice, skirt and a fascinator, and enjoyed a post dinner bitch with nice SIL

daisy99divine · 29/03/2009 22:26

sounds like a top weekend CMOT - just enough bad family to give you something to gossip about with lovely SIL

racing maybe I should be kinder about the Js. I mean boys are delish so perhaps I shall learn to like them

by the way, your prediction of world domination by machines was made by Philip K Dick. As he said, the domination of the world by machines will not happen by one big Mother computer being built. It will happn because one day your toaster will simply say "no"

It has always struck me as very very true!

mistlethrush · 29/03/2009 22:27

Is there any Rose and olives left? Budge up a bit - my feet are killing me!

I have spent most of the day at the NCT sale. It was from 2 - 4, but I got there at about 11.30 and left at 5! I was helping - so setting out tables, unloading boxes onto the relevant tables, quick cuppa and scout round - then I ended up taking money from lots of helpers (as I was very quick making my purchases, I got onto the till very quickly), then immediately went into my alloted role of queue manager - there should have been 2 of us, but the otherone was doing other things (inc carrying things out to various cars) - which meant I was trying to stop people from going to the wrong side of the clothes, making sure that the tills were kept busy (there were 9 of them!) trying to stop people that had paid coming back through into the hall, explaining that we couldn't 'just look after something' for anyone etc.

I wouldn't say no to a slice of the Victorian Sponge if there is any left.

daisy99divine · 29/03/2009 22:27

by the way, JM, you need to fess up

What were you and JackDaddy doing in Earth Hour - creating your own special lady fireworks??

mistlethrush · 29/03/2009 22:29

Unis - I've not given up hope on the sandals yet....
