Chatty thread for ND mumsnetters

whiskeyarmadillo · 29/09/2024 07:11

I thought I'd try and start a friendly chatty thread here on the ND board. All are welcome. Bring a cuppa.

I'm whiskeyaramadillo. I'm late 40s and AuDHD. I have a ND parent and two ND children - my third DC is NT ish. I work full time and live on the western edge of London but my heart is firmly in the countryside which is where I grew up. I have one black and white cat who is my sunshine although he is in my bad books today after bringing in a mouse.

Today (Sunday) I'm sorting out my very very messy house - again. Making sure homework is done and uniforms are clean. Putting endless pants and socks in drawers. If I'm lucky I'll get to lie on the sofa and continue reading 'Wintering' by Katherine May or watch a bit of a crappy fantasy movie with a giant mug of tea.

What is everyone up to today?

I had my assessment yesterday. She assessed me as autistic within minutes, but also thinks I have ADHD of some type and ehler danlos. She thinks meds would really help. I know her professionally thru my job, so it was a bit weird, but I wasn’t going to say I didn’t want to go ahead. DH came with me.

Glad you had a good outcome! What happened that she knew within minutes, if you don’t mind me asking? Do they ask questions of your DH or was he just there for support? (Sorry if these questions are not appropriate!)

How do you feel about that ,were you expecting a diagnosis,or not really sure

0psiedasiy · 12/12/2024 16:59

Autism- was expecting it.
ADHD and ehler danlos- wasn’t expecting or even ever considered, however I’m now going to speak to GP about them.
its been a bit weird as I have been asking a few people at work, the work base that knows me really well said we already know but the people I don’t know that well, but I manage them, have said they hadn’t picked it up. We all working in learning disability and/ or autism services.

0psiedasiy · 12/12/2024 17:05

@WakeMeUpForCoffee she said she knew from my behaviours and the first few things I said, and my notebook. When she asked about masking I said I do it to the point where I go by a shortened version of my name at work, and that’s my role/ how I cope at work. I had already filled out several assessments before that she had looked at.

DH there for support but very useful at times, like when I said I didn’t have any special interests and he reeled my multiple special interests, including ones that I no longer have (picking up interests, totally living for that interest and then dropping it, the reason I do this is apparently down to the adhd side).

Hi @0psiedasiy - you sound like me. I shorten my name at work too, and that’s my work persona. I’m AuDHD and have the same special interest in bursts thing too. I’ve tried meds and they work well for me, but I’ve dropped my dose down and supplementing with Lion’s mane as it makes me feel less like a different version of me - It took a while to find a balance but I feel like me but the best version of me now (most of the time - hormones aside).

How are you feeling about it all?

I keep forgetting this space exists, but have just seen a thread come up in Active. When did that happen?

A different thread but in this topic.

I'm wondering if the thread was moved from one of the main boards?

I hope everyone is coping well with Christmas and the school holidays. I've managed to buy everything, but still haven't wrapped hardly anything. I'll still be wrapping at midnight on Christmas Eve because I'd have been doing my tax return during the day.

Myas · 25/12/2024 18:14

It’s even ones that are started on here, just saw one also that’s not been moved.

Merry Christmas 🎄

Hello all. Has anyone tried having a screening assessment at a private psychologists, before having a full assessment? I am ruminating on the idea of an assessment for adhd/autism but balking at the price tag (and the wait times here for NHS even with right to choose are very long). I think it’s fairly likely I have adhd but less sure of autism. The screening assessment costs £200 so not cheap either but cheaper than the combined assessments on the chance I’m not ND or ‘just’ have adhd and am not also autistic, or vice versa etc. Then I could just go for that specific assessment and save some money. I’m also kind of nervous about the whole process if I’m honest! I’ve been dragging my feet about this for about 2.5 years but finally facing up to it.

What would they be screening for ...to give you a rough yes or no ...I didn't even know this was a thing .
I waited on NHS for both mine .
Once you've been accepted to be assessed you get sent some information on coping meanwhile, and actually the waiting time gave me chance to get my head round it and read up on it ,so getting the actual diagnosis didn't come as a shock .you could always get your NHS application in ,and then look at screening

JewelleryCat · 30/06/2025 00:37

Hey all, I keep forgetting about this thread and this board. How’s everyone coping in the heat? I hate the heat so I can’t wait for this to peak and for it to be cooler

Loobyloo9 · 30/06/2025 06:06

Boiling alive
House seems to trap heat in the summer and trap cold in the winter
Very annoying
Only Monday and Tuesday at 32 then my long range forecast says back in the low 20s for the rest of July ,which I can cope with
It's hard because I hate extreme of heat in either direction,so I go from hating the winter to hating the summer
Luckily spring and autumn are ok

Loobyloo9 · 30/06/2025 06:09

I've been taking monjroro and I've lost 7stone ,so I've absolutely no summer clothes at all ..I've ordered so much and it's all been sent back.
I'm funny with fabric and colour and style and it's no easier trying to find summer clothes on a thinner body ..at this rate it will be winter before I find a summer dress I'm happy with ..
Adding to the stress

JewelleryCat · 30/06/2025 06:16

@Loobyloo9 I’ve been quite happy with Seasalt. I don’t know if they do a summer dress specifically but it’s all cotton, good fit

I don’t like being too cold either but at least with the cold, you can use things like a heated blanket or an extra layer whereas if it’s too hot, you can’t do anything until the temperature drops. Also, well done on losing all that weight!

Loobyloo9 · 30/06/2025 06:25

Yes I need everything cotton
And all the nice dresses are polyester..yuk yuk .feels vile
Why do manufacturers make clothes in polyester,I see it more and more and pj ..who wants polyester pjs .. sweaty all night long ,no thanks

JewelleryCat · 30/06/2025 09:09

Cotton is the way to go. I can’t abide polyester either. If you want cotton pjs, I recommend George at Asda. They’re like 99% cotton, 1% elastane and very good prices 🙂

stickygotstuck · 30/06/2025 19:21

Houses here are not built for the heat anyway, but today we've had a horrid warm breeze that made me close all the windows. Even with all the blackout blinds closed since morning, the heat coming off the windows this afternoon was quite something!

I hear you on the polyester horrors, especially for nightwear! (Shudders) Tesco are also good for cotton nighties.

Well done on the weight loss @Loobyloo9 ! I feel your pain re. fabrics. I buy stuff based on how it feels to the touch, so online shopping is very hit and miss (or rather miss and miss!)

JewelleryCat · 30/06/2025 19:28

If any of you need a fan, I recommend Meaco Sefte fan. Really quiet, it has a night mode, air precision so you can get the cool air where you want it and I is lovely. It doesn’t blast hot air which other fans do

Edited to say it isn’t cheap so there might be cheaper on the market but to me, you get what you pay for

Loobyloo9 · 01/07/2025 11:40

I was looking forward to the rain today
But weather forecast now saying 30 again..
I've been awake since 4.30am
And it was 20 Degrees at 5.30am
Mind you come January I will wishing for a day like today

Loobyloo9 · 01/07/2025 11:41

There's a horrible thread going about why a lady who is autistic has had 4 children.
I name changed and tried to give a balanced answer
But it's all lost in fairly depressing comments
I should really learn to avoid
