Muslim Mumsnetters

This board exists primarily for the use of Muslim Mumsnetters. Others are welcome to post but please be respectful.

Anyone else fed up with some of the blatant anti-muslim hatred on mumsnet?

I don't know if i should even bother trying to address it anymore.
Anyone else fed up?

This board was set up as a safe space for Muslim site users. If you believe that should not be respected, I'd suggest raising it with Mumsnet moderators via Site Stuff. Alternatively, if the existence of the board is offensive and you can't restrain yourself, there is, I believe, an option to hide the board's existence so that you don't have to be troubled by it any more.

I've reported @sillsillything

MagentaRocks · 06/01/2025 17:50

I am an atheist, I don’t feel persecuted. I understand that in history and still in some countries atheists are persecuted but that doesn’t mean I feel the need to persecute people who have religious beliefs.

I don’t believe in God, any God, but I do find religion and religious building fascinating. I sometimes wish I had faith as I know it brings comfort to people.

I read threads on this board and other similar boards to get an understanding of how people feel and what it means to them and to make sure I wouldn’t do something inadvertently to offend/upset. I really don’t understand why someone would come onto Muslim thread specifically to be offensive.

By all means, go ahead.

I'd still like to ask you what you think about the post that stated a theocracy would be lovely.

I much prefer freedom of religion, where you can be a muslim, and I can be a (lesbian) atheist.

I find the lack of comment about how a theocracy would be an evil, misogynistic, homophobic and racist system, regardless of the religion it was based about, very disturbing.

Yes, but how do you feel about theocracies?

And misogyny, homophobia and racism?

As a woman who is off-white and lesbian, couldn't you just reassure me you don't believe in any of the things that would happen under any kind of theocracy?

Or at least one question:
As a lesbian, am I a lesser human being?

Please be quick to respond, my comments are getting deleted faster than the speed of light!

But atheist are the most persecuted (non) religious minority in all of history. You might not feel it as much in GB, but atheist get beheaded and imprisoned in many countries - even those that accept non-majority religions.

And, in any event, no atheist here is persecuting those with religious beliefs.

There might be one atheist who isn't OK with a theocracy, as was suggested some comments ago; and is also not OK with misogyny, homophobia and racism.

She is aware there are many countries throughout the world where she'd be immediately murdered, imprisoned and otherwise persecuted. In a fashion much more serious than that which could apply to any religious minority. She doesn't care what religion people follow in their home.

But her questions about theocracy, misogyny, homophobia and racism go unanswered.

Is thar why she is unwelcome and reported, while you don't?

Scirocco · 06/01/2025 18:11

@sillything , I don't consider you to be 'less than' on the basis of your ethnicity, sexuality, gender identity, political opinions, or anything like that. I do consider you to have been disrespectful and likely intentionally offensive towards posters here. As I have said previously, this board was intended as a safe space for Muslim posters, with fewer offensive terms and anti-Muslim remarks than elsewhere on the site. If that is unacceptable to you, then I'd suggest either hiding the board or raising with Mumsnet that you object to the board's existence. There is no need to come on to a board intended to be a safe space for a minority group and use offensive and insulting language towards the people there.

The point is this is a Muslim mumsnetters board and should be a safe space for them. I think you should leave the thread alone now.

ETA - she doesn’t owe you any answers. If this was a thread on a different board and there was a discussion about different religions then that would be the place to ask respectful questions. Not this one.

@sillything posts claiming to be in good faith generally shouldn't themselves include offensive terms.

(For people reading who may be unaware, the term 'Mohammedan' is deeply offensive and Islamophobic. This is not a new thing. It's been offensive for over a century.)

I've never heard the term Mohammedan. What does it mean and why is it offensive? Is it similar to calling a Chinese person a chinky?

In terms of the linguistics, it's considered offensive because it describes worshipping a human, which goes against the core principles of Islam. Historically and socially, it's been used by people who oppress and persecute Muslims, and continues to be used in that way today. It's very hurtful and associated with people enslaving, torturing and murdering Muslims on account of faith. Its primary use today is as a pejorative, anti-Muslim, dehumanising slur.

@sillything why don't you start a new thread in chat? Perhaps you will have more people engaging with you there.

@sillything I'm not familiar with the term 'Xian', but if you are using it while knowing it to be offensive, then that is a real shame. Now that you've pointed out that this is also an intentional use of an offensive term, I would also suggest refraining from using it in discussions, too.

LaLaflower · 06/01/2025 19:19

@sillything Why are you derailing the thread???? You clearly lack any critical thinking. Are you incapable of making your own thread?

Ha! Plenty of people have asked me what's wrong with me all throughout my life.

I dare say there is nothing wrong with for being an atheist. Nor for being a woman or a lesbian.

Least of all for questioning a supposedly "atheist" poster who stated a society that followed sharia law would have nothing wrong with it.

If you're OK with a theocracy, then I really don't know what to say.
