Anyone else fed up with some of the blatant anti-muslim hatred on mumsnet?

I don't know if i should even bother trying to address it anymore.
Anyone else fed up?

Yes - it's disgusting how normalised it is.

Stormwalker · 08/08/2024 14:02

Yep. I avoided mumsnett for years. Till I saw there was a Muslim mumsnett! Plenty of racists here!
Now though when I meet racists in real life I'm ok with it.
Let me know you're an ignorant racist and we can agree for you to go live your life and I'll live mine we can leave each other alone.
The difference is unfortunately some racists will use their position to cause you grief they can't just live and let live!
Met a youth worker who refused to speak to me, I was smiling and saying hello, her colleague jumped in front of her all apologetic etc.
I was shocked because we are all adults.
I didn't think about it at the time too much as was just a bit shocked it's been a while! in hindsight I realise this white racist (yeah she was a racist no other reason for her to behave like that it wasn't like i had said or done anything she was happy to talk to everyother person present everyone else being white) is teaching children and has influence over children. I would not want my kids anywhere near her. Unfortunately I didn't get her name or anything so can't report her. This was at a training session where we are told over and over about diversity inclusion equality and kindness!

Scirocco · 08/08/2024 14:34

It's really sad to see. Still, think of the good deeds we can insha'Allah accrue through daw'ah!

The saddest bit for me is the lack of concern from moderators. Sometimes I report things and get told to challenge it or "you can always block the thread". Other times I get told things won't be deleted because they've been challenged in the thread.

The hypocrisy of some posters is quite disappointing and says a lot about their character - on one thread people might say "oh, it's terrible that Muslims are experiencing violence", while in others saying how we're getting what they think we deserve...

TakeMe2Insanity · 08/08/2024 14:39

It’s alive and well. The minimising after Southport and the run up to last night has been ridiculous and that’s totally ignoring the situation in Gaza.

That's the scary thing isn't it? Everyone is anonymous online but they'll be our teachers and social workers.

I hear you. Even if you had reported this youth worker, you would have a hell of a job getting them to understand, or believe that it was racism that made her act like that towards you. Sadly she will come into contact with poc, and her feelings towards them will come out, in how she treats them.

@TakeMe2Insanity I don't want to cause offence, but please can you explain what you mean by "the minimising after Southport"?

Thank you.

Porridgenpots · 08/08/2024 15:37

Yes it’s disgusting and scary tbh but a symptom of wider society.

LoremIpsumCici · 08/08/2024 15:40

It’s really depressing the Islamaphobia on here. I am sick to my back teeth of it.
Every religion says the same thing- treat others with humanity and as equals, do not kill, do not steal, etc.

Porridgenpots · 08/08/2024 15:41

I just exited a thread earlier today in the feminist board where some were almost trying to justify the riots or at least sympathise with the rioters. And they kept banging on about Asian /Muslim grooming gangs - as if there isn’t a huge amount of child sexual abuse committed in all communities. I’m
not Asian or Muslim but I find it really sickening when they do this.

Not only is it racist but it shows they don’t genuinely care about the wider and deeper issue of children being abused or they wouldn’t exclusively focus on “Asian grooming gangs”

Does everyone have to be pro Muslim? Or pro Christian? Or pro Jewish? Or pro Rastafarian? Or pro Hindu? Or pro atheism? Or pro Buddhist? Why can't someone disagree with all or some of your religious beliefs? Surely there are certain beliefs that you disagree with? As long as it's kept respectful and no one is breaking the law I don't see why it should bother you that some people are anti Muslim. You shouldn't expect everyone to agree with your beliefs that is impossible no matter what religion you have.

TakeMe2Insanity · 08/08/2024 15:46

@NeverGuessWho after the murder of the girls in Southport and the hijack of the vigil by the Far Right, there was a lot of fear in the general non white community particularly among muslims including on mumsnet. On mumsnet many people went out of their way to say that we (muslims) had nothing to fear etc.

Porridgenpots · 08/08/2024 15:51

I am Christian, so by definition I don’t share the same beliefs as Muslims (although there may be some points of agreement between our faiths) it’s not about people not being allowed to not believe in Islam or not being pro-Islam.

It’s the hatefulness that’s constantly spewed about Muslim men and women, the negative stereotypes and the twisted victim mentality of blaming Muslims for everything and claiming they get better treatment .

We are seeing extreme manifestations of that mindset being played out on the streets.

I can’t give you the source as I don’t remember but read in passing that 83% of sexual crimes against children were committed by white people.

Thank you.
The vigil wasn't hijacked.
The violence happened after the vigil, and at the mosque, not in the centre where the vigil was.
It was disgusting all the same.

I completely understand the fear, having spoken to Muslim friends about this. Apologies - I didn't realise that you meant that the fear was minimised on Mumsnet, I thought you meant that it was minimised in mainstream media, and/or on the streets.

To say that minority groups had nothing to fear, when far right rioters were throwing rocks and bins at police, and smashing windows at the mosque is just ignorant.

I was fearful for my friends in the police and friends and colleagues who are not "white British".

SallyWD · 08/08/2024 16:03

Yes! 100%, every single thread about race or riots seems to end up with attacks on Muslims. I'm sorry to say but this thread will go the same way.
Muslims are picked on in a way other groups aren't. I'm not saying there aren't issues to be addressed (there are) but I'd say the same about every other group of people, including humanity as a whole!
People make sweeping statements about Muslims all the time! There are nearly 2 billion Muslims in the world. Around 1/4 of the world's population are Muslims. They come from many different countries, there are many different types of Islam. Yet people lump them together as a homogenous mass and say things like "Muslims are misogynistic, Muslims are homophobic, Muslims don't respect our laws, Muslims dont integrate." I sometimes wonder if people who make these grand statements about 2 billion people have ever made an effort to get to know Muslims. It seems they just parrot things that other say.
Someone on the other thread about Muslims was talking about how different Hindus and Sikhs are to Muslims became "They kill you with love, they give away free food to those in need". Muslims do this too but it's never bloody reported. Nothing good about Muslims is ever reported. I moved to a Muslim area 12 years ago and had no preconceptions about Muslims but was blown away by the kindness of the people I met. The muslims I know are community minded - far from refusing to integrate as people always say, they are always reaching out to other communities in an effort to build understanding, to form friendships. The Muslims I know respect other cultures and religions, are not offended by the word Christmas or any other such nonsense people accuse them of. They raise money for charity. I know Muslims who give up their time at weekends to work at homeless charities, who donate their birthday money to charity.
Yes some Muslims have done bad things. Out of 2 billion people there will always be bad eggs. But what I don't understand is why do people always pick on Muslims and not other communities? Many of the criticisms of Muslims (honour killings, arranged marriages, homophobia etc) could equally be applied to Hindus and other communities but I never hear them mentioned. People say Muslims are misogynistic because they force women to wear the hijab. No doubt this sometimes happens but the Muslim women I know either don't wear it or choose to. They are very devout and wearing the hijab is so expression of their faith. Who are we as western women to tell them they shouldn't wear it? I've seen people criticise the hijab on Mumsnet about a thousand times but I've never once seen anyone mention the fact that some orthodox Jewish women shave their heads on marriage and wear a wig or head covering because it's seen as imodest to show their hair.
There! You can see how passionate I am about this subject.

Yes exactly, I’ve seen that statistic too a few times from various sources.

I don’t think white men necessarily are over-represented in sexual crimes against children considering the population size, but they’re certainly not under-represented. The way some of the racists go on it’s as if they think other races of men (Mainly south asian) are the main culprits, but there are just a few ‘bad eggs’ in the largely noble white community who do it too 🙄 .

They know the truth though and it’s all fake outrage. That’s why I wasn’t surprised to hear some EDL members were exposed as paedophiles despite frothing at the mouth over “Asian grooming gangs”

NeverGuessWho · 08/08/2024 16:10

@SallyWD

Well said!

I work with a youth group, and earlier this year, we visited a mosque. I'm no expert, but my limited understanding of Islam is that it's a beautiful, respectful religion.

The Muslims that I have met are wonderful people.

As a PP said, there are bad eggs in every religion, country and ethnic group. That is not exclusive to Muslims at all.

GladOliveUser · 08/08/2024 16:11

Is it anti Muslims or anti Islam though? Because I have seen criticism of Islam on here and that isn't hate speech . Equality Act relates to discrimination against people ie Muslims not against idealogies like Islam.

It's when it turns into hate speech that it's an issue. I certainly by no means expect everyone to be 'pro-muslim' or agree with all teachings of Islam or any other religion.

There's a difference between debate and criticism of religions, and cruel/hate-filled/discriminatory speech or behaviour.

We aren't talking about debates and disagreements. We're experiencing online abuse, in-person abuse, discrimination, etc. as people, due to our faith. That's what we're talking about.

You may not have seen it, but we have and we continue to experience it. Regularly. So a poster started this thread in the Muslim Mumsnetters section, presumably so we can have a safer space to discuss how we feel about it.

Parkingt111 · 08/08/2024 16:24

@Stormwalker that's horrible and there's no way to prove they were prejudiced but you just know sometimes.

This isn't specifically about Muslims but when I was in college one day one of my friends had a horrible incident. Her psychology teacher would always randomly make comments how this country has become so filthy and dirty. That day he went the extra mile and gestured towards where she was sitting with some other Asian students and said "just look at all these desks.... look how much dirt is on them no wonder this country has become so filthy"
She complained to her form tutor as it was obvious to everyone what he was alluding towards but her form tutor didn't take the matter any further.
Some people are just really clever with how they mask their racism

It's not about being pro- everything. It's about not being verbally and physically attacked because people identify us as Muslims. What this thread, in the Muslim Mumsnetters section, is about is the people going way beyond "I disagree" and into active hate speech and discriminatory language. Perhaps we could have a safer space to talk about how upsetting that is without people minimising what's happening or jumping down our throats about it?
