Does anyone else feel like the Islamophobia on Mumsnet has ramped up in recent days?

There have been several faux innocent threads started which have given posters the opportunity to be open in their Islamophobia. It’s truly depressing to read.

I'm actually shaking now, after reading the 'Maldives' thread in CITME. How f*cking heartless can people be.

Off I go to look up that thread.

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/06/2024 20:13

I’ve got as far as it being referred to as “collective punishment”!!!

anotherlevel · 03/06/2024 20:17

@TakeMe2Insanity the post in question has since been deleted but I had quoted them in a post on that thread before it had.

feellikeanalien · 03/06/2024 22:37

I'm not Muslim but I'm finding the blaming Muslim women for not speaking up a bit OTT now. I know you've probably all felt like this for a long time now and I do generally try to avoid boards where I don't have a specific interest or knowledge as I feel that I can't comment without a full understanding. In this instance I just want to say that we're all women with the same problems who might happen to follow a different religion ( or none) and life would be so much better if we just tried to listen to each other and recognise that we don't always see things the same way.

Scirocco · 04/06/2024 05:29

Thank you, @feellikeanalien . I wish more people could see that, that things would be so much better with a little acceptance of diversity.

One of the things I really like about where I live has been how diverse it is. I hope we don't lose that ability to celebrate and embrace diversity.

Mumsnet is on fire tonight.

I know it shouldn’t bother me but I always end up with that heavy feeling in my stomach when I see post after post of anti Islam rhetoric.

Hope you’re all doing ok tonight.

anotherlevel · 18/06/2024 23:35

Hi @ForestFawn I've not been much on today. But I'm glad I've missed the posts! What threads were they on?

Hope you’re ok too

WafflesOrIceCream · 18/06/2024 23:38

Yes definitely!😔

ForestFawn · 18/06/2024 23:39

There are two active ones right now.

One about serving halal burgers at a BBQ.

And on the back of that, another on why people don’t like Muslims, which is essentially an invitation for unpleasant posts.

It’s truly depressing. Yet again, it leaves me feeling like an outsider in my own country.

OP posts:
anotherlevel · 18/06/2024 23:46

Oh yes I've just seen someone has made a thread in AIBU about the halal burger thread.

I didn't realise so many people held such contempt for halal burgers. It's wild out there tonight.

Parkingt111 · 18/06/2024 23:52

I stopped reading after the first three pages, not going to let it sour my mood.

anotherlevel · 18/06/2024 23:54

Wow just read a few posts from the burger thread. It's awful. Just goes to show how ignorant people can be.

Springchickenonion · 19/06/2024 07:14

Yes, I was reading the burger one last night. Then came to our neck of the woods to see if anyone else had noticed. I refrained from commenting as I would end up winding myself up.

I'm sure people are just making up threads to create a problem....

I think that the Islamophobia on MN has ramped up since Farage became leader of Reform. There are a lot of pro Reform posters coming out of the woodwork. Some are bots, I am sure.

ForestFawn · 19/06/2024 08:17

@BibiSuzanne Absolutely unbelievable that your post has been deleted yet that thread has been allowed to stay up. There was nothing wrong with what you said although you did say MN could do better…

And seeing as your post, which was very reasonable, has gone, MNHQ are clearly online yet choosing to allow that thread to stay up.

And whoever here felt the need to come into the Muslim space and report someone complaining about Islamophobia, shame on you.

If it wasn't for this area we now have, I would have boycotted mumsnet. Unfortuantly I don't have any Muslim friends really IRL. So I see this has a safe space. But for how much longer....?

Proves my point. There are some posters who are waiting for me to comment and then whatever I say gets deleted. Well Mumsnet, can you tell me what I said that was so wrong?

Efacsen · 19/06/2024 09:21

Interesting priorities - two busy 450+ threads riddled with anti-Muslim hate not even 'hidden for a look'

One post on an out of the way quiet board referencing paid bots gets promptly zapped

Think it was probably your reference to paid bots - it gets counted as troll hunting

ForestFawn · 19/06/2024 09:26

I had a response from MNHQ. They said they had a look, inclined to give the poster I reported the benefit of the doubt and I am welcome to challenge any opinion with which I disagree as long as it’s within the Talk Guidelines.

So basically it’s staying up.

OP posts:
BibiSuzanne · 19/06/2024 09:28

Okay then. I accept the 'troll hunting'. Nothing else though.

Except she didn’t refer to paid bots on MN. She mentioned paid bots on other sites.

Despite that, her post gets deleted yet an entire thread where posters have free rein to post anti Muslim rhetoric is allowed to stand.
