Does anyone else feel like the Islamophobia on Mumsnet has ramped up in recent days?

There have been several faux innocent threads started which have given posters the opportunity to be open in their Islamophobia. It’s truly depressing to read.

@biscuitnut to add to what @Hoppinggreen has just said, you do know that Islam isn't the only religion who doesn't stun animals? Yet I rarely ever see other religions being criticised over this

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 29/04/2024 14:24

I'm not Muslim but feel for you. I've not been for long and have read for years topics of interest, usually health-related and MN's comments.

What I have noted is the bile some post at anything and everything. Possibly because I read too may threads posts but there are certain people/posters that IMO appear to enjoy winding up others for the sake of it or IMO, to please their little group of friends. I may be wrong but it is the impression I get.

Having stated the above, many nice people that are helpful and sincere.

OP, report the post/threads as MNHQ is really helpfuly

Parkingt111 · 29/04/2024 14:26

For those of you who want to use your freedom of expression to criticise Islam, there are so many other boards you can openly do it on. I don't understand the motivation of wanting to do it over here

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2024 14:26

It's not about 'debate' or 'faith' though. It's about pretending that 2 billion people want us all dead or in a caliphate. It's nonsense. What it is is what is true everywhere. A few stupid, sometimes violent, men ruining it for everyone else. It's true in every culture, every place, every time.

Women in hijab or niqab are obvious so they get shit. But it's the stupid men causing the problems.

On a predominantly female website, for mums more than anyone, can we not lump boring, everyday Muslim mums, just like boring, everyday secular mums, in with extremists?

Why have you come on here? Do you think it's appropriate to come to what is supposed to be a safe space for Muslims to have a go at us?
Why from all places here?

Absolutely, I am all for freedom of speech but I won't go on certain boards (I was invited here 😁) such as the Boarding School one.
No need

IClaudine · 29/04/2024 14:33

Some posters need to read the message at the top of this board:

"This board exists primarily for the use of Muslim Mumsnetters. Others are welcome to post but please be respectful"

You have the whole of the rest of MN to spew bigotry.

Parkingt111 · 29/04/2024 14:33

@Hoppinggreen yes I don't mean posters in general, just the ones who have only come on to criticise Islam on this particular board and not in good faith either

StopStartStop · 29/04/2024 14:35

In answer to the thread title:
No. But I do think the 'Islamic marriage abroad' thread was deliberately goady, and quite possibly other threads have been so, too.

People don't have to be 'Islamophobic' to be wary of making commitments they don't fully understand.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2024 14:35

My rule for spotting this kind of thing:

If they only care about animal welfare when it about halal, never any other time, and they aren't vegan and don't promote cultures who eat vegan and vegetarian,

When they only care about women's rights when it's about Muslims, never male violence in any other context,

When they only care about terrorism when it's Muslim, never Catholic, atheist, right Wong or any others,

When they only care about extremism and radicalisation when it's Muslim, never right wing or any other,

When they only care about dress when it's Muslim, never any other orthodox religion or way of dressing,

If it quacks and waddles, it's a duck.

TakeMe2Insanity · 29/04/2024 14:42

Hoppinggreen · 29/04/2024 14:21

Apologies to the Muslim ladies here if I am wrong but doesnt the Quran say that both men and women should dress modestly? Does Islam specifically say that women only must cover up?
I know several Muslim men who would never wear shorts for example

Men are also obliged to cover up (to a different degree) but more importantly men are told to
lower their gaze. Obviously for some men (cultural) it’s easier to restrict women than to take responsibility for themselves.

gestroopd · 29/04/2024 14:42

I dispute the term Islamophobia.
*Do you? How intellectual of you.

People can criticize the religion without hating the people. Some of the nicest people I have ever met have been Arab and Muslim - that doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion on the Middle East or Islam.
I'm not racist, I have black friends.

Islamophobia is a term used by those Muslims
"..those Muslims..."

..who want to shut down all arguments by use of bullying tactics.
What argument is it you want to have? Do you have them with Jews? What about Sikhs? Christians?

I find parts of Islam deeply offensive.
Gosh that's terrible! You're offended? My goodness. I'm curious why you think your offense to a religion I can tell you don't know much about (see below) is in any way pertinent to anything, given that nobody is asking you to convert.

I find the fact that we have a teacher in hiding for his life because he drew a picture of Mohammed a tad troublesome.
Sweet use of "tad". I agree that that's "a tad troublesome". I'm so glad though that no other religions have extremists, psychologically unwell people who follow it. It's only Islam that causes harm to non-followers. Yup.

I have an issue with women having to cover up.

Aaaaaaand here we have it. The deep religious knowledge comes out. First let me assume you're talking about covering their hair. Well let me give you some good news! They don't. It depends on interpretation. Also depends on what country they live in - Iran and Afghanistan being good examples of where patriarchy utilises religion to wield power. And while we're on covering up, I assume you have same "issue" with Judaism and Christianity? Judaism especially.

I dislike the rampant homophobia.
That separates it from Judaism and Christianity how?

The anti semitism makes me sick.
Given that you don't seem to understand Islamophobia, you'll need to define what you mean by that.

Does this make me islamophobic?
Yes, sweetheart, habibti sweetheart, it does. At best.

You imply that people following a religion are intellectually and emotionally inferior to you as they follow an "offensive" religion. You cannot say they're smart and sensible if they base their lives on something offensive. You imply they're violent, irrational people because one or two are fucked up. You're also skating on the edge of the common implication that the women are victims of the men ("have to cover up"), that they have no agency, and therefore that Muslim men are inherently dangerous - although I accept you didn't actually say that here, but I think you're very close.

If you were to imply that Jewish people were intellectually and emotionally inferior to you, you'd be antisemitic. If you were to imply the same about black people, you'd be racist. Unless you view Muslims as inferior to both those groups, who I assume you view as your equals, what you said is Islamophobia/anti-Muslim. And if you view them as inferior, well you are too.

Yes, that thread did seem designed to illicit certain responses

This is literally how Islam views others, it even advocates violence against non-believers, threatens them with eternal hell fire, orders taxes on them.... Suddenly, someone JUST JUDGING you as intellectually inferior doesn't sound so bad, eh?

Yeah but someone who might or might not have been a Muslim was a bit mean to someone I vaguely knew once so ya know its all fair and reasonable

Parkingt111 · 29/04/2024 14:51

@biscuitnut You are you and Islam is a religion.

How insightful
Once again why have you come on to the muslim mumsnetters board to say all of this? To define our identity and tell us all the things you think are bad about Islam?
There are so many other threads and boards you can do it on till your heart's content. Can't you leave us in peace here?

Parkingt111 · 29/04/2024 14:52

@gestroopd habibti 😂😂 you are too nice

I’ve not had a chance to sit and read the comments properly, but can I remind posters that you are on the Muslim board and therefore can you not come on to our space to “criticise” our religion. Please respect that this was created as a safe space for us.
