just wondering after the backlash some seemed to have about jay z on the glastonbury thread, i was interested to know if there are any rap fans on this forum?

personally it's one of my favourite types of music, if not my favourite (when it's done right.nas,krs1,mos def etc)

OP posts:

I like most types of music, if it's good. Jay-Z is good. I don't understand what the problem was about him being at Glastonbury.

TheMagnificent7 · 30/06/2008 14:59

Love it, and just found out that I know more about it than I thought when I had to explain it to my 9year old. Jay Z is very cool, but I wouldn't have suggested he was a Glastonbury headliner. Certainly welcome, and probably headline another stage, and his entrance to 'Wonderwall' was one of the best bits of showmanship I've seen all year. But I understand the critics, he's not as popular here, or wasn't until Saturday, and was not, i don't think, the best choice to headline.

A million miles better than that painted veloceraptor, Whiny Shithouse, before him though. What a skank

theinsider · 30/06/2008 15:00

No

suzywong · 30/06/2008 15:02

yes I like it when it's done right too
not 20 year olds with a colossal advance from the record company blowing it all on bling and dancing girls with no musical talent to back it up.

PM Dawn and the old school stuff I like
Australian rap music is pitiful, I put it on a par with penny whistle music. Don't get me started on that

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 15:13

Suzy - you're not wrong there about aussie rap...I get a bit queasy when i hear it.
Herman do you like The Roots or Tribe called Quest? Thats my kind of hiphop. Not into new gangsta guntotin women slapping stuff though.

suzywong · 30/06/2008 15:19

it's feckin terrible isn't it?
I always turn triple J on hoping I can bear it or get past the obligatory Nick Cave and Ben Harper but when that ROT comes on I have to push Queens of the Stone Age in to my cd player and try and not to be cross.

I must get more in to Aussie music but I was SORELY disappointed by the last SilverChair cd but I have been told the Grinspoon and pendulum are worth a listen.

Dragonbutter · 30/06/2008 15:19

I like rap.
But i'm not good at explaining why i like particular types of music.
I just do.
And it makes me dance.

2shoes · 30/06/2008 15:25

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 15:29

Go on dragon, show us you dancing!
Suzy - I've got a crap memory - are you an aussie?
Have you heard of Fat Freddies Drop or the Bamboos? . DH is a music promoter over here and I'll keep you posted on new Aussie bands.

Fanella · 30/06/2008 15:29

Custardo I was about to say that.

I liked DeLaSoul too.

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 15:30

DeLaSoul - oh god, yes!

suzywong · 30/06/2008 15:30

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I am a north london pom

tut

PerkinWarbeck · 30/06/2008 15:31

bits and bobs, particularly Kanye West, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Jungle Brothers, the pharcyde.

DH has a wee penchant for the more gangsta stuff, but I will not have mention of "ho's" under my roof [hairy feminist emoticon].

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 15:32

Then what the feck are you doing listening
a/ to triple J
b/ to aussie rap
???!!!!!!!

suzywong · 30/06/2008 15:32

I admire your morals, perkin

I like him

welll back inthe day I did

suzywong · 30/06/2008 15:33

Because I live in Perth

do try and keep up dear

TearsofaPersonalClown · 30/06/2008 15:33

Pendulum are great Wong.
This is the latest offering doing the rounds.
I can't stand the really fast rap that you can't understand what's being said, i.e Twista etc but I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to my music tastes.
Rock will always be my first choice and preference though.

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 15:35

Oh flippin eck Suzy, I now understand your other posts to me recently.
I think its time for me to join wankers corner..

suzywong · 30/06/2008 15:35

thank you Tears, I will squirrel that away for when I 'm feeling young

cyteen · 30/06/2008 15:37

I love good quality hip hop, not into cheesy plastic chart rap though.

Sorry, that makes me sound like such a wanker, but it's true. E.g. love DJ Format + Abdominal; hate 50 Cent. When it's done right, lyrical wordplay is one of the most exhilarating things to listen to...which is why it makes me so depressed to hear the great legacy of hip hop reduced to a side of beef mumbling about capping some ho because she wouldn't suck his dick, or some variation thereof.

Flamesparrow · 30/06/2008 15:39

what's not to love?

Fanella · 30/06/2008 15:45

good

and

even better

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 15:54

De La Soul? I have thought De La Soul were a pretentious, talentless bunch of arseholes ever since I read an interview with them in which they said "We are a new generation of musicians. Our records are our instruments."

Yeah, right. Move along. Nothing to see.
