just wondering after the backlash some seemed to have about jay z on the glastonbury thread, i was interested to know if there are any rap fans on this forum?

personally it's one of my favourite types of music, if not my favourite (when it's done right.nas,krs1,mos def etc)

The Beastie Boys were funny though. Especially as a lot of people took them seriously.

jojosmaman · 30/06/2008 15:56

Hate the new rap that sits on MTV base nowadays (yawn)but still have old school classic hip hop artistes on the ipod such as Missy Elliot, Snoop, 2-pac, Dr Dre, Jay-z (from MTV unplugged, quality), Biggie Small, Nas etc.

I tend to like songs rather than genres/ artists now, does that mean I am getting on a bit?!!

jojosmaman · 30/06/2008 15:59

Good links Fanella, both perfect examples of rap music as it should be

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 16:02

OOhhh Unquiet, trying to spark a little debate on hip hop are we? Go on then, I'm all ears...
Surely the whole point of hip hop is that rapping and mixing samples replace instruments? I think Tribe Called Quest have released some of the best hip hop ever.

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:03

I'm probably too old. It all sounds like "an' a yo yo yo, an ma bitch an ma ho, an check DIS out, I is feelin' real good I is in da hood, gonna put a cap in yo ass" to me.

My main problem is the lack of any perceptible tune in the ones I hear. I mean, if they aren't singing it's just speaking. And anybody can speak. And pinching bits of other people's records to speak over isn't actually that clever, it's just... pinching bits of other people's records.

I also hate all the glorification of guns, the objectifying of women, the great big STUPID swinging gold jewellery, baseball caps on back to front, and the obsession with designer trainers and basketball gear. They look like cartoon characters.

Apart from all that, what's not to like??

Blandmum · 30/06/2008 16:04

No, I loath it. I always think that it is missing a C from the front.

Crap

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 16:05

Listen to the early albums by The Roots and tribe called quest you'll see a very different side to hip hop.

Hassled · 30/06/2008 16:06

I like lots of it - yes, the objectification of women and glorification of crime etc is best avoided, but there is a lot of rap that I think is great - witty, clever, profound.

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 16:07

BTW I am taking this far too seriously, but just want people to see that the origins of rap weren't to talk about bitches and guns thats all.

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:07

I know A Tribe called Quest's first single. Well, the one that was always getting played on the radio. "Can I Kick It?/Yes you can" It used to get me screaming "Fuck OFFFF!" at the radio!

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 16:10

Don't bother with the chart stuff. Have you listened to their album"midnight marauders"?
Go on, give it a go.
dare you...

TheMagnificent7 · 30/06/2008 16:18

This is what I had to explain to my 9 year old. Rap came about precisely because American kids/young people i ghettos couldn't afford the instruments, let alone music classes, but felt they had something to say. They took basic drum sounds from either early drum machines, or moe often, snatches of good drum beats from their favourite songs. The lyrics, certainly in the early days, were totally reflective of their everyday speech. 'The Message' still stands the test as aone of the greatest pieces of music as biting social commentary.

Gangsta rap came abut as an off shoot, and some of it was very tastelees, but if you can cut through the crap, there is a lot to be said in the lyrics about people at the bottomw fighting back with music against the guns and gang culture.

Not all of it was biting..."Fish...which is my favourite...dish" anyone ? And Radio 1 still plays Jump Around which has the line "I'll serve you up like John McEnroe...if your girl steps up I'm smacking the ho" which is not exactly good taste.

On the whole, love it. British rappers are not great, sorry, but doing it quicker just isn't better. In the whole, white rappers aren't so hot, and I'll accept Eminem because of his production by Dre. It's just a different kind of folk music. Just with more jewellry and wobblier bums.

And Pendulum should be Prime Minister for the Slam video

brightongirldownunder · 30/06/2008 17:04

I must go to bed and now will have that vision in mind. thankyou dragon

HermanMunster · 30/06/2008 17:10

i love a bit of everything really. not so much modern commercial gangsta rap but when gangsta rap began it was great and i still love old NWA, the chronic, doggystyle etc.

a tribe called quest are unbelievably good as are a lot of the solo projects to stem from them.
in modern terms i still think Nas is great as are jay-z,mos def, kanyes first 2 albums. but i definitely think rap is in a recession quality wise for the last 4/5 years.

also i'm starting to like some uk hiphop etc and i never thought i'd say that, but artists who don't just try and copy the american style are actually sometimes brilliant. e.g. dizzee rascal or jamie t who is an acoustic rap artist so thats a bit different.

I like Kanye West - I saw him at a festival last year and he is very professional. I like 'American Boy' with Estelle.

I thought Jay-Z was the best thing about 'Numb'!

I also like his bonnie and clyde duet with Bejonce.

BigBadMousey · 30/06/2008 17:20

DH nearly filed for divorce when he discovered my collection of old Ice T, Ice Cube, Snoop DD, Beastie Boys etc stuff - he made me promise to never play any of it near him (hmmpphhh)
