Find out what testers thought of Surcare’s sensitive laundry detergent

CeriMumsnet · 04/05/2021 17:42

This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who have been testing products from Surcare’s sensitive range. Testers tried either the laundry liquid or the laundry capsules, as well as Surcare's fabric conditioner and washing up liquid.

This is what Surcare has to say: ‘We are excited for Mumsnetters to try our sensitive laundry detergent as although we have been around for over 30 years and have a really loyal customer base, we want to spread the Surcare secret far and wide! With eczema cases rising more than 40% in just four years*, we knew we had a responsibility to educate people about some of the chemicals and fragrances found in their washing products. This is particularly relevant when you consider that the onset of eczema and other skin conditions often begins in infancy, so protecting delicate baby skin is crucial. We have spent 30 years perfecting our family of cleaning products so that you can do the everyday with less worry. People often think they’re compromising when they use ‘sensitive’ products, however our range has great cleaning power even on cool and quick washes. We really hope you enjoy using it and can’t wait to hear what you think’

Testers, please give your feedback by answering the questions below on this thread, as well as completing the survey we have emailed you

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?
2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?
3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?
4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?
5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?

All testers who give the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky tester will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?

I tested capsules laundry detergent and really liked them. They are good for my son's sensitive skin (with mild eczema) and washed well. Easy to use and good, safe packaging.

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?

Lack of reaction on my son's skin. Washing abilities.

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?

I don't tend to use fabric conditioner. Using Surcare's one I did not see much difference compared to my usual wash.

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?

Cleans and bubbles very well. However, I found it very thin so I had to use quite a lot per wash.

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?

I noticed less of the irritation on my son's dry skin.

I used the capsules. I liked that they weren’t fragranced, they seemed to Bering my clothes up lovely and clean.

The fact that even thought they were in scented my washing still had thang lovely fresh clean smell to it

3.
I liked this. At first smelling it from the bottle it smelt a tad strange but once added to my wash load my clothes smelt so clean and fresh, prefect combination

I did like how my hands felt after using this but To be honest I didn’t like the washing up liquid at all with regards to suds. I found I had to use quite a lot to get a good amount of suds but then found the suds disappeared very quickly.

Yes I did. I found my son washing itching like he normally does. There was less noticeable redness to his skin too. My hands felt lovely after using the washing up liquid. And for the fact they are unscented I found it still smelt clean and fresh

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?
I tested the capsules. Overall, they performed well, except on a blood stain on white sheets (night time nosebleed!) which I've washed twice and can't get out. It was also my first time using capsules and I realised I wouldn't be able to use them exclusively as some of my eco wash cycles only need about 25% of the usual amount.

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?
The clothes seemed slightly softer even before adding the fabric conditioner.

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?
It was good - it did soften clothes, with zero fragrance though due to being a sensitive skin product. Side note: if you will be posting any again, I'd recommend taping the lid on this bottle as mine leaked onto the contents of the box.

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?
This worked well and I didn't feel like I was using more than usual but we somehow went through a bottle in about 2 weeks which is much faster than usual! I'd possibly blame DH, maybe he's been heavy handed. I think our usual one being a bright colour (as opposed to Surcare being transparent) might help him not to use too much?

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?
My DC wasn't having a flare up at the time of using it but no new flare ups have started so it may be a positive, or a coincidence! The washing liquid especially felt lovely and silky and gentle so I'd be happy for my DC to use that if playing at "washing the dishes"!

My reservations about repurchasing mostly are environmental and ethical:

  1. The products aren't tested on animals (great) but I don't think they're vegan. Getting a vegan approved and leaping bunny symbol on your products would be a great step forward. I'm working towards ensuring all my home and beauty products have these.
  2. The amount of plastic. If you would supply your products to refill shops or sell in disolvable capsule form or similar (like Ocean Saver, Iron & Velvet and the like), I would gladly be a customer for life. As it is, again, I'm working through the house trying to find waste-free options for each product and plastic (recyclable or not - most of it doesn't get recycled anyway) just isn't good enough these days.

Finally, I have to say I really like the logo design! It's beautiful. I'm pleased with the lovely shopping bag!

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?

We tested the capsules

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?

It really helped to clear up my youngest sons eczema

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?

The clothes were lovely and soft but didn't smell as nice as usual. I understand though that perfumes are the main culprit in aggravating skin conditions so it makes sense

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?

Impossible to get some things such as baking trays clean.

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?

As above my youngest sons eczema was much improved

Thanks for sending the samples to test.

  1. Capsules - no issues for me or my baby who have sensitive skin/eczema. I prefer to use powder or liquid normally as I use below the recommended dosage and extra rinse but capsules was just as gentle on our skin. Laundry came out nice and clean even with baby food purée.

  1. I actually like the fact that it didn't have a strong fragrance. Felt like it was designed for people who would be sensitive to this. Clean is good enough for me.

  1. I don't normally use fabric conditioner so I'm not sure I noticed much of a difference

  1. I like the washing up liquid. Even tried it without gloves and had no issues. Other washing up liquids would normally causes extreme dryness to my hands

  1. I would say there's no improvement but our skin didn't have any reactions. We've already been using products designed to be for eczema skin or non-bio.

I tried the capsules which were dead easy to use, sensible kid proof packaging and no issues with sensitive skin. Just missed the smell of fresh laundry.

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?

Felt clean and perfect for sensitive skin

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?

Again works well, easy to use. Just missing a scent

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?

Cleans well but I missed the event and the translucent colour made it hard to see how much I'd poured which created a foam party on a few occasions

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?

Much less problems with rashes or itchiness

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent? I used the detergent liquid, and was really happy with the fact that it didn't effect my partners psoriasis but cleaned my toddlers clothes really well
2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried? We really liked the fact that it was gentle on all of our skin.
3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner? The only disappointment was that there was no fragrance at all, and I do like my fresh washing to smell nice
4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid? We always use the washing up liquid. I'm a chef and my hands really don't like a lot of washing up liquids, Surcare is always very easy on them

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?

I tried the liquid. Like the packaging and measuring cup lid. Effective at cleaning even grubby toddler clothes.

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?

Easy to measure and use. Good at cleaning all our laundry.

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?

Really good at softening linen and things that can go quite crunchy like my DD’s heavy winter grobag.

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?

Foams easily and quickly. Really effective at washing off baked on things. Really liked it.

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?

I’m wary of changing products as DD is prone to eczema. She didn’t have a flare up and I was happy switching for the trial at least as I trust the scientific background of the surcare range.

I tested the Surcare Capsules and I was very impressed with the detergent as It washed our clothes just as good as my usual brand and there was no skin irritation.

Again I was Impressed with this and I also liked the plain packaging.

  1. I used Surcare sensitive Liquid Laundry Detergent, it has a lovley subtle scent which is not overpowering, it cleaned my clothes brilliantly, the measurement cup was great for no waste and the liquid has lasted a longer time than my normal detergent, I researched the prices and it's so much cheaper in comparison to what I normally use so overal this is a brilliant product and it's a good family friendly product.
  2. I liked the amount you had to use most, a little really does go a long way!
  3. The fabric conditioner overall was okay, it did soften our clothes but I like a scent to my laundry and it left no scent at all, understandably it's a sensitive range so if your happy with no scent but soft clothes then this is your product, it's super cheap to buy in shops, I'll definitely use this again.

4.Washing up liquid was probably just as good as fairy the only issue I had was it really really irritated my hands which I already suffer dermititis but if you used gloves while you wash up then it's fine
  1. all my families skin have has absolutely no irritation to this products and I will definitely be purchasing these in the future.

  1. I liked the scent and the fact that my clothes were incredibly soft after being washed.

  1. The conditioner took me back in time. I generally prefer fruity scents but this one reminded me if when my children were babies.

  1. I usually use cheap washing up liquids so I was very happy to be proven wrong this time. A small amount did really go a long way and was enough for much more items.

  1. Definitely. My hands stopped being dry and doing the washing up is no longer a chore anymore! I am very pleased with the overall performance of the 3 products and have recommended then to my family and friends.

I tested the laundry capsules. I am not 100% convinced that these perform as well as my usual powder. I also often forgot to remember this has to go in first before all the clothes.
Overall I was happy with the conditioner, the results it provided and the fragrance. The washing up liquid also performed well against my usual brand.
My sons have sensitive skin and I was very happy that these products worked well with their skin not aggravating it at all.

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?
I tested the capsules. I liked them, never needed more than one even on our largest load. It was good to see plenty of soap suds through the cycle and everything came out clean. Importantly DH didn't have any skin reactions wearing clothes washed with this detergent.

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?
That I only needed to use 1 per load and DH didn't have any reaction to it.

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?
Mixed opinion. It was good you only needed the amount it suggested which was half a cap, and clothes did come out soft (without softener clothes are scratchy and like cardboard otherwise). But. And I know it's their selling point. I didn't like that it was unscented. I like my clothes to smell like they've been cleaned. But that's just personal opinion.

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?
Both me and DH thought it was rubbish. It didn't cut through grease at all and we often had to tip water and run another bowl as it just went flat really quick. This means we went through the bottle really quickly. It really doesn't even compare to my normal brand. It's also unscented. However after grilling chicken on a cast iron griddle I did my usual of putting some washing up liquid on the pan and poured on boiling water to let it soak for a bit. And my god. The STENCH, it was like melting rubber/plastic. It was disgusting. I've never noticed that with any other washing up liquid.

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products? It's not that there was an improvement, it was more that those members with sensitive skin didn't have any reaction after washing clothes in it, which often happens with other non sensitive brands.

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?
I tested the liquid. I liked how gentle it was for our skin but was disappointed in its stain removing abilities (although to be fair I didn’t try adding it directly to the stain as suggested as I don’t normally have to bother with my usual detergent). I find hanging washing in the sun really helps get stains out anyway. I wish the bottles were made from recycled plastic as this would be a plus point environmentally.

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?
I loved the fact it had no fragrance. It is almost impossible to find un-fragranced or naturally fragranced washing detergent.

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?
It was okay, but I normally use vinegar as a fabric conditioner and found no difference in performance. For people saying they wanted a fragrance I suppose you could always add some drops of essential oil to the load (this is what I normally do).

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?
I found it to be effective at cleaning and my hands were less dry after using it.

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?
There were definitely less red patches on my sons skin and our skin has been less itchy.

1.Which Surcare sensitive laundry detergent did you test (capsules or liquid)? What are your overall thoughts on the detergent?

I tested the liquid. It washed clothes as well as my normal brand and didn't leave any fragrance so they smelt really fresh when I line dried them. The cap doesn't have any measuring markers though so it was very hit and miss as to whether I put the right amount in, as I was estimating on each wash. As I am in a hard water area and have full loads to wash I needed more than one capful on each wash. Please add measurement markers to the cap!

2.What did you like most about the detergent you tried?

Washed as well as my usual brand and left no soapy fragrance.

3.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive fabric conditioner?

Good, left the clothes nice and soft and without any fragrance. Did the job.

4.What are your overall thoughts on Surcare’s sensitive washing up liquid?

We didn't like this unfortunately. We do a lot of washing up as we don't have a dishwasher, and found it quite thin so needed to use more than we would normally. It was also very drying on my hands and actually ended up irritating my hands a lot and making them worse. When the bottle ran out and we switched back to our usual brand of Fairy, my hands returned to normal.

5.Did you notice an improvement to yours or your family member’s sensitive skin after using Surcare sensitive products?

No change to normal. My toddlers sensitive skin was still the same. My hands were worse in fact from the washing up liquid.
